Lyr Req: Over the River

Subject: Lyrics for 'Over The River'
From: Ansley

Looking for lyrics for an old Sunday School Song entitled "Over the River" - it's not a Christmas Carol... need it for family reunion...

Any thoughts? Thank you.

Are you thinking of:

Over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house we go.
The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh through light and drifting snow.
Over the river and through the woods, trot fast, my dapple-grey.
Hurrah for the fun! Is the pudding done? Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day!

Or there's OVER THE RIVER, CHARLIE

Over the river to feed my sheep,
Over the river, Charlie,
Over the river to feed my sheep
And to measure up my barley.

Charlie's neat and Charlie's sweet, and Charlie, he's a dandy.
Charlie, he's the very lad that stole my striped candy.

Don't want your wheat, don't want your cheat,
And neither do I want your barley;
But I'll take a little of the best you've got
To bake a cake for Charlie.

Can you remember the first line or even some fragments? That might help. A Sunday School song might be regional, or was it actually a hymn?

Ansley, I know the verses to "Over the river and through the woods," if that's what you need. Ask.

I did see this great version. Any forerunners, perhaps?

kytrad, did you notice the date of Ansley's request? She has probably gone over the river, through the woods, reunited with the family and is far away by now. It was a sole posting (click on the name).

Thanks, Stewie- No, I didn't notice the date. Nor, apparently, did Harpgirl and BruceO (why pick on me!). But, how can a sole posting still be around?

The entire forum is archived. It looks like harpgirl pulled the thread back up to post the lyrics in an appropriate spot...

Lyrics Add: LOOKING THIS WAY
(Over the River)

Over the river, faces I see,
Fair as the morning, looking for me;
Free from their sorrow, grief and despair,
Waiting and watching patiently there.

Refrain-
Looking this way, yes, looking this way,
Loved ones are waiting, looking this way;
Fair as the morning, bright as the day,
Dear ones in Glory, looking this way.

Father and mother, safe in that vale,
Watch for the boatman, wait for the sail,
Bearing their loved ones over the tide,
Into the harbour, near to their side.

Refrain-

Brother and sister, gone to that clime.
Wait for the others, coming sometime,
Safe with the angels, whiter than snow,
Watching for dear ones, waiting below.

Refrain-

Sweet little darling, light of the home,
Looking for someone. beckoning, "Come";
Bright as a sunbeam, pure as the dew,
Anxiously looking, mother, for you.

Refrain-

Posted here are fragments of two songs, "Pretty Little Pink," and one with the line "Over the River to fed My Sheep." [Can't remember the original offhand, but there is a thread in mudcat with lyrics.]
