Yes indeed. My friend Sue told me now that I'm 40, I have to be all serious and mature.

I stuck my tongue out at her. :-)

Yes, you do. You are no longer permitted to stand on your head, or turn cartwheels in the grass, or roll down hills, or do any of that fun stuff. Not until you became 60. That's why I'm glad I'm over 60. Everyone thinks it's just "second childhood" when the truth is that I never outgrew my first.

I have to be what??? I turned 41 this year... I've been doing it wrong all year!!! But the worst thing is I reckon I'm also screwed for the next couple of decades.... Bum.

Guess I'll just have to resign myself to enjoying myself instead.... *G*

Me too, 40 in May this year. I'm quite glad to be here actually, things could have been very different for me as I was poorly in my 20's so WELCOME 40, I embrace you and am grateful I've got this far!!

It is so refreshingly lovely that you youngsters can enjoy yourselves in this manner...40 being such a far distant memory. My even more mature tongue out to you all.
Best wishes, Mike.

Serious and mature? No thank you, I say. Lucky for me I'm only 35. Hopefully by the time I reach 40 you'll need to be 50 to be serious and mature.

A mere youngster! Don't listen to anyone who says you have to grow up! Keep on having fun - that's what keeps you young.

Forty isn't even middle age. Shouldn't you be in bed instead of fooling around on an internet site?

40? You're just a kid. You have every right to act like one.

Steve, who is 56 or 57, I have to think about it, but I prefer not to. I don't care how old I am.

Kim, just remember, you can't help getting older but that you can still refuse to grow up.

40. 40!??

EGAD!! A mere child!

And "serious and mature?" I'm 76, and I still haven't mastered that one!

Inside every seventy-year-old, there's a teen-ager saying, "What the hell happened!??"

At forty, you're too old to blame your eccentricities on youth and too young to blame them on old age.

You can only blame them on being batshit crazy.

Only 40 - Huh!!

I remember it as well as I remember anything these days... with a 3 year lead on you!

Life may not actually begin now, but it certainly makes a lot more things permissable - you can blame it on being batshit crazy, like I've been doing for the last 20 years!

Only 40!! You're still a youngster. Well I am 55 and proud of it, and I still stick my tongue out, and do lots of silly things, it's what keep us young in mind, that and good exercise keeps the body fit.

Thanks y'all! No, McGrath, I have no idea what I'm going to do when I grow up. Maybe I will have it figured out by the time I finish graduate school next year.

And Wys, I've been accumulating gray hair since I was 29. ;-)

I agree with Don Firth. Can't help the maturing bit though, just like old cheese. As for the serious part, getting old is serious when you reach my age.

Well as I'm stroking an 18 yr old cat, that makes me about 120.

Which is how it should be on the morning after your birthday, but not if you went to bed the right side of midnight (just) and stone cold sober!

I'm with Don Firth on this one. At 63 - which is 21 x 3 - I'm still 21 between the ears.

The great thing is half-price gigs ! We went to the Big Session at the Arts Centre a year ago. My beloved's ticket cost her £12 ; while mine, as a fully qualified ould git, was a fiver.

And as for LtS : stroking an 18 year old pussy - well, chance would be a fine thing.

Growing old is mandatory ; growing up is discretionary. The only thing I don't the do now that I did then is FARTING - see the post on Ageing- the Sordid Truth.

40's good - but 50+ is even better. You can get away with so much more people just blame it on your age.

Last week I got fed up with waiting in line for the next petrol pump, the furthest away pump was empty being blocked by a car filling up - with me so far - so, I drove round the the other side of the pumps and reversed into the empty space thus avoiding the four cars in the que. I'd seen another 'oldie' do this - brilliant.

My 17 year old son sank down in the front seat and said I cant believe you just did that. !!! Great !!

Oh before you all start - no I dont make a habit of this sort of thing - not yet, anyway.

A friend of mine who was 46 at the time told me, whenever she was asked her age, she'd answer
"Sixteen, with 30 years' experience of it!"

Sounds fair enough to me.
