Java Application Advice.

First, what does Java do? Secondly, Java takes up a heck of a lot of space on my computer. For example, I have a pile of Java Environment 5.0 updates on my computer. I also have Java 6.0, and that is also acquiring updates. Do I really need Java? If so can I "thin it out" some way? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Probably help if you wipe it all, and do a clean up to date install. You won't see pics and graphics on a lot of pages without it.

Giok: Thanks for that.

Tunesmith - unless you are developing Java applications, you only need the Java runtime for programs to run. Unless you have an application that specifically needs some earlier version of the runtime (not very likely) you only need the most recent of the runtime systems. So as Giok said, you can uninstall all the Java versions you have and get the most recent runtime from Sun.
