Lyr ADD: Captain John McPherson / Captain Mac

Here's an old song a long deceased uncle of mine used to sing.

These are the words I remember, anyone have the rest?

Also author, singer, origins?

Captain John McPherson

Oh, well set up & handsome as a sailorman should be
Was Captain John McPherson of the schooner Ben McChree
A fine & honest bachelor of just a score & ten
The idol of the ladies & the envy of the men

Oh, north & south, east & west, 'Frisco to Perim
It didn't matter where he went, the girls chased after him,
They chased him, pursued him, they wouldn't let him be
'Til Captain John McPherson cursed the day he went to sea

He dyed his beard a fiery red, 'twas not the slightest good
To make himself a skeleton he took some patent food
He wore a pair of spectacles, he looked morose & queer
But the girls still flocked around him, & said he was a dear

Oh, north & south, east & west, 'Frisco to Perim
It didn't matter where he went, the girls chased after him,
They chased him, pursued him, they wouldn't let him be
'Til Captain John McPherson cursed the day he went to sea

At last he grew so weary that he said unto the mate
Unless this adoration cease, I'll go clean off my pate
Why won't the girls leave me alone?

Google that and go to Page 10. It is in PDF format and I have no idea how to link to it or reproduce it. It's a version, anyway.

Here's the song from "Canadian Merchant Service Guild News" Vol. 25, No. 1, April, 2003, page 10. They call it "an interesting and amusing poem out of the Port of Arklow, Ireland by C.C. O'Reilly. (Actually it's a sea-chant, key D)."

CAPTAIN MAC

Oh, well set up and handsome as a sailor man could be
Was Captain John MacPherson of the schooner "Ben Machrie".
A shy and modest bachelor of just two score and ten,
The idol of the ladies and the envy of the men.

CHORUS: Oh, East and West, North and South, Frisco to Perim;
Didn't matter where he went, the gals were after him.
They chased him, pursued him, they would not let him be
Till Captain John MacPherson cursed the day he went to sea.

He dyed his beard a fury red. 'Twas not the slightest good!
To make himself a skeleton, he took some patient food.
He wore a pair of spectacles, looked morose and queer,
But the gals still flocked around him and said he was a dear.

CHORUS

At last he grew so weary that he said unto the mate,
"Unless this adoration stops, I'll go clean off my pate.
Why can't the gals leave me alone?" Said the mate, "I'll save you, sir!
You take a wife, that's my advice, and leave the gals to her".

CHORUS: (as above but last line:)
But they did when Madame Captain John was mistress of the sea.

My dad used to play this and we'd sing (those were the pre-TV days - we all sang together in the evening). The words above are what I have in the sheet music.

Several libraries have the sheet music, described thus:

CAPTAIN MAC'
Words by P.J. O'Reilly; music by Wilfred Sanderson.
New York: Boosey & Co., ©1915

FIRST LINE: Oh, well set up and handsome as a sailor man could be,

FIRST LINE OF CHORUS: Oh, East and West, North and South, 'Frisco to Perim

[I could not find a library where the sheet music was viewable online.]

One wonders if the good captain continued to employ "a handsome cabin boy."

Cheerily,

Desperately trying to get hold of the sheet music for Captain Mac by Wilfred Sanderson. Which UK library (preferably near the Midlands )might have a copy - needed in under 2 weeks.

Just came across this forum. I am also a big fan of Captain Mac. Sang it a number of years ago while a member of Brockport State Men's Glee Club. Follow the below link to a PDF copy of the score on the University of Rochester UR Research site.

Delighted to fine these lyrics. My Dad, an professional tenor had a great list of fun songs he would sing while we were on long trips in the car. All that I remembered of this one was the first verse and the Chorus. Many thanks for posting it.
