Lyr Req: My Family Owns This Town (David Olney)

Once again I turn to my mudcat mavens to help me flesh out the snatch of a song that has been running through my head lately. I know there's a song called Mansion on the Hill by Neil Young but this isn't it.

The words I remember are:

My daddy built this town
he built this mill
We live up on the mansion
on the hill
We had slaves before the war
We don't need them any more
Money talks, money always will
My daddy built this town, he built this mill.

I would like the name of the song and artist and writer, and the rest of words if possible. The song tells a (harrowing )story and the narrative almost reads like a mystery that is revealed in the last verse. Heard it on FUV a couple of years ago but can't find it now.

Thanks in advance mudcats...you haven't let me down so far.

There are more songs called "Mansion on the Hill" than a horse has hairs.

Found a neat one, though:

"Mansion on the hill

Hit the dancefloor 'round about midnight
Gin and Juicin' he's a feeling fine
Come the morning all the signs went up
Policeman said the joint was shut.
All the brothers getting busted outside
Undercover officer reading them tem their rights
One way ticket boy , you're prison bound
The night the lights in Dowlais went down

How long we gotta wait until we get the keys
To the mansion on the hill
How long we gotta waste our time
Boarding a bus that's bound fs that's bound for the welfare line

Shakes the blues off and she tries her luck
Makes a little bet hopes the horse comes up
Picking pockets for some easy money
'Cos she blew the goddamn lot on the national lottery
Steals the paper check check the front page
Headlines read the dancehall can't be saved
How can they open up the opera house
The night the lights in Dowlais went down

How long we gotta wait until we get the keys
To the mansion on the hill
How long we gotta waste our time
Boarding a bus that's bound fs that's bound for the welfare line

Tweak freak Tony on a four to eight
Undercover sting right time wrong place
Columbian connections in the corridors of power
Mean the man on the money ain't ever going down
Lord Lucky takes his lady to the Magic Flute
A little taste o' toot, now he's bullet proof
Tony tunes to underground radio
The night the lights in Dowlais went down

How long we gotta wait until we get the keys
To the mansion on the hill
How long we gotta waste our time
Boarding a bus that's bound fs that's bound for the welfare line"

Done by Alabama, maybe?

There's another song called MANSION ON THE HILL, by Hank Williams and Fred Rose, from 1948. Lyrics are posted in this thread.

No so far that's not it. I forgot who sung it, it was a man, and I don't think he was in a band. I've heard it on WFUV.

Hard to believe the Mudcats are stumped!!!

It's a great modern 'protest' song told in a story, and I hate to give away the 'punchline' but if it'll help -the end being that the narrator has killed his girlfriend and gotten away with it b/c he's rich; hence the refrain,,which I remember as.

Money talks money always will
My daddy owns this town he built the mill .

The name of the song is "My Family Owns This Town" and the singer is David Olney. Here's an article about the CD it is on (the actual song is mentioned near the end). My Family Owns This Town

MY FAMILY OWNS THIS TOWN

[I transcribed this from a sound sample:]

…My family owns this town; they built the mill.

I will run this town when Daddy's gone.
I could run it now, the truth be known.
I'm not in any hurry.
Life is too short to have worries.
A man of leisure, I will have my fun,
But I will run this town when Daddy's gone.

[And this quote comes from the review (see GUEST's link above):]

I dealt with poor Delia in my own way.
I drowned her in the river.
I just could not forgive her.
Her suicide was all the news next day.
But the boy ran off before I could make him pay.

[As sung by David Olney on "High, Wide and Lonesome," Philo, 1995.]

Lefthanded Guitar: You say you "can start performing it now and again." I assume that means you now have the complete lyrics. But the other thread doesn't contain the complete lyrics. So where did you get them? Do you mean the other thread jogged your memory and now you remember the complete lyrics?

Whatever—will you please post the lyrics here, if you have them?

Here you go:

MY FAMILY OWNS THIS TOWN
(David Olney)

My family owns this town, they built the mill
We live in the mansion on the hill
We had slaves before the war
We don't need slaves any more
Money talks, money always will
My family owns this town, they built the mill

I will run this town when daddy's gone.
I could run it now, the truth be known.
I'm not in any hurry
Life is too short to have worries
A man of leisure, I will have my fun
But I will run this town when daddy's gone

I was very happy with my life
Until that ugly business with my wife
She'd been keepin' to her room
With her sadness and her gloom
We never touched, she locked her door at night
She dared deny me of my legal right

Then one day I began to hear
Talk my wife was having an affair
It seems Delia found her joy
With some common local boy
As for myself, I did not really care
But the family shame was more than I could bear

The boy ran off before I could make him pay
I dealt with poor Delia in my own way
I drowned her in the river
I just could not forgive her
Her suicide was all the news next day
But the boy ran off before I could make him pay

My family owns this town, they built the mill
We live in the mansion on the hill
We had slaves before the war
We don't need slaves any more
Money talks, money always will
My family owns this town, they built the mill
