Songs about Christopher Columbus

Subject: Need songs about Christopher Columbus
From: Doug Chadwick

I'm putting together a 15 minute musical sketch for children (8 to 11 years old) very loosely based on Christopher Columbus. Does anyone have any suggestions for songs? They don't necessarily have to mention him by name but could just be could be about travelling to unknown, distant places and the like. Perhaps the most important thing is that they don't want to be too serious.

I've had a look in the DT so there's no need to link to there.

Also, does anyone have any good one-liners about old Chris that could be worked into the script?

Thanks in anticipation

Doug,
Here are a couple to start you off:

IN 1492
In fourteen hundred ninety-two
Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

He had three ships and left from Spain;
He sailed through sunshine, wind and rain.

He sailed by night; he sailed by day;
He used the stars to find his way.

A compass also helped him know
How to find the way to go.

Ninety sailors were on board;
Some men worked while others snored.

Then the workers went to sleep;
And others watched the ocean deep.

Day after day they looked for land;
They dreamed of trees and rocks and sand.

October 12 their dream came true,
You never saw a happier crew!

"Indians! Indians!" Columbus cried;
His heart was filled with joyful pride.

But "India" the land was not;
It was the Bahamas, and it was hot.

The Arakawa natives were very nice;
They gave the sailors food and spice.

Columbus sailed on to find some gold
To bring back home, as he'd been told.

He made the trip again and again,
Trading gold to bring to Spain.

The first American? No, not quite.
But Columbus was brave, and he was bright.

COLUMBUS DAY
("Mary Had a Little Lamb")
Columbus sailed the ocean blue,
Ocean blue,ocean blue.
Columbus sailed the ocean blue,
In fourteen-ninety-two.
Columbus sailed the ocean blue,
Ocean blue,ocean blue.
I enjoy making discoveries,too.
How about you?

They came from this site

Regards
Derek

If you want to get damned silly, you can use the "Christopher Columbus" song by Chu Berry and Andy Razaf that Fats Waller recorded that's also available in a version by The Jim Kweskin Jug Band.

On several different Waller compellations on RCA Victor or Bluebird and on "The Jim Kweskin Jug Band's Greatest Hits" on Vanguard.

And for your further consideration:

COLUMBUS
by Nancy Schimmel (Malvina Reynolds' daughter)
(as sung by Faith Petric)

In fourteen hundred and ninety-two
Columbus sailed the ocean blue
It was a courageous thing to do
But someone was already there

Columbus thought that the world was round
So he looked for the East while westward bound
But he didn't find what he thought he'd found
For someone was already there

        The Inuit and Cherokee
        The Aztec and Menominee
        The Onondaga and the Cree
        Columbus sailed across the sea
        But someone was already there

Now it isn't like it was empty space
The Caribs met him face to face
Could anyone discover a place
When someone was already there

So tell me who discovered what
He thought he was in a different spot
Columbus was lost but the Caribs were not
They were already there

        Chorus

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

There's the verse from Tom Lewis's "I'm marching inland"

Columbus he set sail to find out if the world was round,
He went on sailing to the west until he ran aground.
He thought he'd found the Indies, but he'd found the USA.
I know some navigators who can still do that today.

I once heard Charlie King observe that in 1492, the people of Labrador were getting ready to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Leif Ericson's arrival in the year 1000. They were celebrating, said Charlie, because he turned around and never came back.

In any case, there's always Stan Freberg....

DOWN IN THE CARIBBEAN (Mitchell Torok)

Have you ever been down to Haiti
when the summer sun was sinkin' low
There's nothing but romance just everywhere you glance
And the native hearts are all aglow

But when the Cuban Queen comes upon the scene
They all stare like a statue out of stone
When they realize what's before their eyes
the other girls are left all alone

Chorus
Down in the Caribbean, it's not a dream you're seein'
When you get a glimpse of the lady with the charm
And from miles away you can see her sway
To the beat of the Cuban Conga line that forms

Up in a tree so high way up in the sky
sits a wide-eyed monkey on a limb
He wonders why the people go to so much trouble
just to try to be like him

He doesn't understand that it's a lady's hand
that makes a heart feel so sublime
And before too long he starts singing the song
and then he gets in the Conga line

Columbus searched for spices but he missed the nicest
part of the Caribbean
He didn't see the charms and the open arms
it was the gold that he was seein'

But I'm glad he missed the sweetest thing I've kissed
cause we're on our honeymoon
I'm so sorry Chris to talk about you like this
but you were five hundred years too soon

Down in the Caribbean...

Bob Dylan's 115th Dream ends with something like,

But the funniest thing, as I was leaving the bay,
I saw three ships sailing, they were all heading my way.
I asked the captain what his name was, and how come he didn't drive a truck.
He said he was Columbus, and I just said, good luck.

And pissed all over the crew!

Can only remember parts of one that started out:

In fourteen hundred and ninety two
In the city of Genoa
There lived a good queen Isabel
A fine old Spanish lady

.......................
That matelot's name well known to fame
Was Christopher Columbo

Chorus; And he swung his balls around-o
       Until they touched the ground-o
       That masturbating, fornicating
       Son of a bitch Columbo

Sorry that' all I can recall right now, it's been a few years.

Phil Harris recorded a song called "Possibilities", which included a verse on Columbus:

"When Christopher Columbus proved the world was round
"He met queen Isabell on his return
"She said, 'Well, tell me Chris about this place you found.'
"He said, 'Well, Bell as far as I'm concerned
"'It's sure got possibilities, possibilities,
"'I tell ya queen, I've never seen such possibilities.'
"Ain't no miracle too impossible
"For anyone who sees the possibilities."

I know this is an old thread......but in case such songs are still wanted, I know of a great one, from a spectacular and obscure album from 1995 by Dana Frauzel from Vanleek Hill, Ontario.

CD is called "Island with Beautiful Names".

I can send a copy of the song if anyone's interested.

It's from the perspective of the Native people, and how they embraced their 'brother'. And it's done w. a reggae beat.

Chorus goes: "Dis is why I don't like Columbus.

I overheard some of the family singing bawdy songs some nights when they were in their cups. This is to the best of my recollection and I believe there were more verses

In 1492 Columbus he set sail-o
He set sail to Port of Spain to find a piece of tail-o
He knew the world was round-o
And tail-o could be found-o
That scientific, geographic Christopher Columbo

One day on a beach far away
They found a maiden brown
Before the sun had set that day
She earned 10000 crown

They screwed her once, they screwed her twice
They screwed her once too often
They broke the mainspring in her ass
And laid her in her coffin

He knew the world was round-o
And tail-o could be found-o
That scientific, geographic, engineering Christopher Columbo

"They All Laughed" is a song composed by George Gershwin, with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, written for the 1937 film Shall We Dance where it was introduced by Ginger Rogers as part of a song and dance routine with Fred Astaire.

They all laughed at Christopher Columbus
When he said the world was round
They all laughed when Edison recorded sound

They all said, we never could be happy
They laughed at us and how
But ho, ho, ho
Who's got the last laugh now?
