BS: has our new society gone too far

I heard the news last night a story of a young lad who had drowned in a pond, Police Community Support officers had not assisted members of the public in the water as they were not "TRAINED"in water rescue.
If the officers were alone, i could understand why they didnt, but people were in the water looking for this kid, they summoned the emergency services, but surely in a case like this its all hands to the deck, not being "TRAINED" is just a pathetic excuse.... perhaps they were just scared of breaching health and safety laws... the worlds gone mad, everyone know theyre rights, no one knows theyre responsibilities. I feel sorry for the parents, but i also feel sorry for the officers, they have to live theyre whole lives wondering if they could have made a difference.

I always understood that PCSO's were to deal with the day to day stuff, paperwork, missing dogs, lost bags, that sort of thing - it's certainly the impression that was given when they were first mooted. Only trained police officers would be sent to 'shouts' and PCSO's were to do crowd control stuff.

I have nothing against PCSO's, they do a duty like other, more formally trained officers, but surely the preservation of life should be the over-riding factor in all cases.

I too, feel sorry for these poor officers. Public opinion is against them and they will be hounded for not doing the "right thing", rather than for doing their duty as their superiors decree.

Personally i think this highlights the point the PCSO's are a waste of time and just a political tool to say that the government is doing something about policing levels.
As you say Liz, doing your "duty" should always take second place to preservation of life.
I say get these muppets off the streets and train them to be proper Police Officers. As always with the Labour government, a half hearted botched up attempt to solve a problem, Unfortunately this kid has paid with his life.

I know of a number of PCSO's that have gone on to train as police officers. It's not a job that I would want to do.

We weren't there. It's worth considering that the "all hands to the deck" approach in a rescue attempt isn't always the right thing to do.

Here's a recent story that came to mind when I read this - Six Egyptian neighbours die in rescue attempt

The 'Muppetts' are the only ones ON the street though. Your ordinary bobby doesn't very often soil his boots with the debris on our pavements. Oh no, too much like work, and then they might have to nick somebody, and that causes too much paperwork. Nah let them stick to persecuting motorists, and people that CCTV have picked up doing wrong. Thus saving them the bother of detecting any crimes themselves.

I had a friend once who lost four sons in one day when three of them jumped in, in succession, to save the first from the Colorado River. Pre-cell phone days, no one else about but other young people, the river swift and strong, no ropes etc. available. It was a horrible tragedy, but they didn't hesitate, not once, about going in after their brother.

Death hurts those who are still living...as we all well know. It does not hurt the dead.

That's a strange fate for four brothers, I must say, but I wouldn't doubt that it's happened on more than a few occasions.

The thing is, It was no raging river but a still flat pond. I hope these 2 clowns who let this child down can live with the consequences of their actions. Pay peanuts and get a monkey springs to mind.

Pay is nothing to do with it. That expression is just an insult to people on low wages.

Absolutely right Big Phil, it was a flat pond with members of the public already searching, as soon as a real police officer attended he went straight in and helped. its time to re think this policing policy, there can be no substitution for real police officers with real power and a court system that backs them up.If it were a raging river, anyone would understand why they didnt jump in, but it wasnt.

The phrase cowardly bas***ds springs to mind. The bloody lake is only supposed to be about 6ft deep they could have used their huge plod flat feet to search if they were unhappy about diving to search.
