BS: What would you not miss if it was gone?

Subject: BS: What would you not miss if it was gone?
From: Little Hawk

Anther thread got me thinking about this. In my case...

TV
commercial radio stations
commercials, period!!!
gambling
lotteries
horoscopes
football, hockey, baseball, hell...all pro sports, I guess
political parties (all of them)
beer
pizza
potato chips
Rap music
Hip Hop
pro wrestling
monster truck events
demolition derby
gossip columnists
"Green Hornets" (they are the people who give out parking tickets around here)
running shoes that cost over $50 a pair

The disturbing thing is that all those things are most certainly going to outlast ME!   (sob! snivel! whine!) ;-)

Ah, well, they may be of better technical quality, but that's all.

Just think what wonderful programming you could have in a media system which was NOT run simply in order to sell consumer goods! Art is always best done for art's sake alone, as has been amply demonstrated ever since human culture came into existence.

Wherever there is a publicly funded media outlet with no advertising there is almost invariably a tremendously higher quality of programming available on that outlet than on commercial stations (and with no annoying commercials frequently interrupting a program), but people who have never (or almost never) been exposed to that kind of media will obviously remain unaware of its advantages. They may even be troubled by the fact that they don't get a commercial break every five minutes so they can slouch over to the fridge and grab another beer!

Pretty much everything on Little Hawk's list except pizza.

I would add:

McDonalds
Starbucks
Waffle House
Yuppie chain eateries like O'Charlie's, Chili's, T.G.I.Friday's
opera (the music, not the Web browser)
all musical instruments with spit valves
"USA Today"
celebrity magazines like "People" and "Us"
Guitar Center
Fred Phelps

Agree with most things on LH's list. Not sure about political parties--we'd need an alternative--might not be easy.

And I would not like beer to disappear. American beer can disappear--except for microbreweries.

And I like parodies of rap--like "White and Nerdy" and "Cicada Serenade"--though I think I can live without real rap.

The alternative to political parties, Ron? Here are a couple.

1. Simply vote for individuals (not members of any party)...on the basis of their ideas, their intelligence, their abilities, and their presentation of same. (this is already done in civic elections in many places, and done with no difficulty, sans political parties) All individuals who run must meet certain baseline qualifications of a fairly obvious nature...such as being literate, for example! ;-) All individuals who run will receive EQUAL (and modest) campaign funding from a public purse set aside for that purpose!!! (the end of most corruption right there) A limited number of individuals will be allowed to run for any one office. Instant runoff type election to select the winner, so that the winner WILL represent a majority of the voters.

It could be done that way. All it would take was the will to do it.

Or..............

2. Select qualified people by LOT to take on the responsibility of serving their peers for a term of office. I honestly think it would result in better, more responsible government than our present ruthless competitive system which is founded upon corruption, partisanship, and dirty tricks.

Again, it could be done that way. All it would take was the will to do it.

**************

If it already was being done in either of the above two ways....everyone would think it was totally normal! ;-) And it would work just as well, probably far better than what we have now.

****************

Be that as it may, I'm merely enjoying a pleasant fantasy, cos it ain't gonna happen. There are too many powerful vested interests whose money depends on maintaining the divisive and corrupt party system as it now exists. It will only end if there is some gigantic, disastrous social convulsion such as a great war or other catastrophe...something which brings our present social order to a crashing end...in which case something new will rise out of the ashes.

Then maybe the political parties will finally be disposed of...as were the absolute monarchies and giant religious regimes that preceded them. (Virtaully no one back then would have believed that those systems could ever lose their pre-eminence either...but they did.)

Many of the things mentioned above.   Especially Starbuck's, McDonald's.

Plus, WAL-Mart!

I'd add:
the Bush crime family - especially Dubya and Jeb
Karl Rove
Joe Lieberman
the Fox Noise Channel
Rupert Murdoch

Heck, pretty much the entire TV "news" media aside from public broadcasting (and I'm not sure I'd miss them much now that they're controlled so heavily by the megacorporations in the medical, pharmaceutical, agricultural, energy and defense industries).

Clear Channel and other humongous radio and TV conglomerates.

On a more personal note, I certainly would not miss my:
arthritis
asthma
and other miscellaneous 'ailments'

But of all the things I've lost,
I miss my mind the most.

A few days ago I was having some work done at my local garage. A blonde came in and asked for a seven-hundred-ten.

We all looked at each other, and another customer asked, "What is a seven-hundred-ten?"

She replied, "You know, the little piece in the middle of the engine, I lost it and need a new one. It had always been there."

The mechanic gave the blonde a piece of paper and a pen and asked her to draw what the piece looked like. She drew a circle and in the middle of it wrote 710. He then took her over to another car which had the hood up and asked, "Is there a 710 on this car?"
She pointed and said, "Of course, it's right there. ."

Nouvelle cuisine, especially the kind that involves applying the sauce with an eye dropper. I want sauce, damn it!!!

TV cooking shows where they start with a recipe that seems easy enough, then introduce an ingredient that you, personally, can't obtain, like a fruit that you never heard of, but they assure you that you can find it in any Uzbekistani food store, or camel cheese (available in the Algerian section of any grocery store). Where do these people live? Apparently not in the real world.

Dunkin Donuts - since, as I get older, my tolerance for sugar coated sugar has gone way down. Bring back plain donuts.

Canned peas
canned stringbeans.
canned carrots
the crap that comes out of Nashville under the name of "Country Music"

Public TV fund raising, which comes around every two months.

Self-help shows, which preempt regular programming on Public TV during fund raising.

REALLY LOUD OBNOXIOUS COMMERCIALS FOR CAR DEALERS ON THE RADIO!!!!!

Really conservative or really liberal thinking.

Out of control political correctness.

I agree with some of the other entries, but not Waffle House. Some states don't have them. The nearest one to me is about 50 miles away.

If your society had the wisdom to set aside some modest yearly budget funds for public TV, RangerSteve, you wouldn't have to put up with those pestiferous fundraising drives...(which I agree are very annoying)

But I know. It's far more important to build a lot more cruise missiles and attack helicopters and stuff like that, right?

Speaking of those damn car commercials...we have a big fat loudmouth car dealer here named Paul Sadlon who used to scream "I WILL NOT BE UNDERSOLD BYYYYYY ANYBODYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!" on his radio ads. Another great reason to turn the radio off when in the Barrie, Ontario region.

Get rid of sodapop?
Nowadays everybody asks for name-brand drinks- get rid of Gatorade, I say!

Traveling with my parents when I was young, no air conditioning in the car, and a water bag hung on the car hood, nothing was more welcome than a stop at a gas station that had a zinc-lined container filled with ice (mostly icy water) and sodapop. Therein I found my favorite, a purplish drink called Delaware Punch- the drink of the Gods, I thought then.

I would cool my hands in the icy water (everyone did, no thought of germs) and slowly become alive again.

Disappointment bloomed if the Delaware Punch was sold out, but I would console myself with a root beer (real sassafras back then) or even a NeHi.

One other thing:

I wouldn't miss MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat). It's not that I have anything against the MREs themselves. They're actually pretty good. Not like home cooking or anything, but they put a lot of the canned and frozen heat-and-eat stuff at the grocery store to shame.

The reason I wouldn't miss MREs is that the only time we civilians get them is when hurricanes come around and blow everything down. Then the Gubmint is nice enough to give us MREs so we don't starve 'til the power company puts all the poles and lines back up so we can go back to deep frying armadillos.

What I'm getting at is: No MREs=No hurricanes.

I will gladly sacrifice the one if it means none of the other.

But what aare "white van drivers". I drive a white GMC van when I'm hauling my pottery to art fairs to sell. Does that make me a white van driver and, therefore, worthy of disdain? If so, should I paint my van some other color? Buy a few dozen cans of variously colored spray paints and invite people over for a van painting party?

White van man is often given too many deliveries by his greedy employer in the first place. In the second place, he is often trying to deliver to house without a name or a number on the door, or at the end onf a long drive with the name beside the doorway, and unreadable or invisible from the road. Doorbells often don't exist or don't work, householders often say they were in when he called, in spite of his having battered the door as loud as he can. When they say "I was in" what they mean is, they were about, in the garage, in the garden, in the loo, in the shower, etc etc.
Then when you do find them in there is the pantomime of not signing until they've opened it, to check if it's intact.
It's OK sir/madam just endorse the signature unexamined.
No I need to check.
OK I'll wait.
"This is not what I ordered, take it back"
I can't.
Why not?
Because it says TNT on the van outside, and your parcel came from Harrod's.
You collected it surely you can take it back?
Madam, this is Inverness and Harrod's is in Knightsbridge, I didn't go down there and collect it myself so I could deliver it to your door for the princely sum of £3.50 per parcel!

I've been there and done that, and it is a very frustrating job, so try and look at it from the other side please.

Yes David Carter you are right about Virgin Trains, GNER (Great Northern Eastern Railways) are just as bad! Toilets normally not working, air con broken, seat booked to three other people, no seats, no food in the buffet, nowhere to put your luggage, although they do normally run on time

Sorry John 'Giok' Mackenzie, but white van drivers are unbelievably rude and mostly very dangerous drivers, they sit 2" from your bumper flashing their lights, when in fact there is nowhere to go, I for one will not be intimidated by there so called road rage and will not be forced to break the speed limit.

I think I am a reasonable driver, I was driving u[p to 1000 miles a week at one time but I VERY rarely get angry in the car, cross with drivers that take stupid risks yes but road rage…not me.

John I am sure you never behaved in such a manner ;-) and I am sure you are one of the rare breed of white van drivers who is not a bad driver, but they are few and far between. Anyway I was talking about these menaces when on the motorways, as for delivery, well yes I can quite believe what you say.

Coffee Health Risks: For the moderate drinker, coffee is safe says Harvard Women's Health Watch

( Boston , MA ) Despite 20 years of reassuring research, many people still avoid caffeinated coffee because they worry about its health effects. However, current research reveals that in moderation-a few cups a day-coffee is a safe beverage that may even offer some health benefits. The September issue of Harvard Women's Health Watch weighs the pros and cons of this popular beverage and eases the concerns of moderate coffee drinkers.
