'Banks of the Seine' any info

Years ago I heard a tune in a session and I seem to remember that it was called Banks of the Seine.

I hadn't heard it since then until the other night, and the same tune is being used for a Ford car commercial on TV.
I have done a google on the name and Nic Jones recorded something of the same name on one of his early albums, but is it the same tune?

I'd be grateful if anyone has info about the tune and the composer.

Cheers!

THE SEINE

One night along the river at San Germain de Pre
I first met my beloved at a small sidewalk cafe
We walked along the river, the shadows passing by
But we only saw each other, the shining water, and the sky

cho: The Seine, the Seine, when will I again
Meet her there, greet her there
On the moon lit banks of the Seine

Standing there across the river mid sound of horn and tram
In all her quiet beauty, the Cathedral Notre Dame
And as we passed beside her, I said a little prayer
That when this dream was over, I'd awake and find you there

We walked along the river 'til dawn was coming nigh
Beneath the Eiffel Tower, we said our last good-bye
Then on that splendid morn' I saw you all in tears
And the beauty of that hour will shine within me throught the years

I don't know whether this is the song you are looking for. It is in my copy of the DT, but does not seem to be in the DT here at mudcat (and it is not a new addition since 2002)

The lyrics that Susan posted are from THE SEINE, written by Irving Burgess and recorded by The Kingston Trio, also by The Four Preps.

Allmusic.com lists one song called THE BANKS OF THE SEINE. It was recorded by Frank Chacksfield and his Orchestra. I haven't found any sound samples, but I suspect it's an instrumental.

I have made a MIDI of the first part of the Seine as sung by the Kingston Trio. I will ask Joe to post it, and you can see if it's the same as the Ford commercial.

Thanks for reminding of this song, which will probably sound very nice on my dulcimer.

Since I posted, I have found out that Tony Hall recorded the instrumental "Banks of the Seine" on an early album which is the same tune as on the Ford Ad.

I am now seeing if the album is still available.

The album notes say that Tony learned the song at his mother's knee (though at the age of 29) and it is described as an unashemedly French piece. The track listing gives all as Trad arr Hall with the exception of this track, but there is no composer credit for the Track.

I should have added that the notes say he calls the tune the Banks of the Seine, but it's not clear if that is his title rather the real name of the tune!

Thanks for the info Mick.

I was hoping that I may be able to get the dots for the tune but from what you say, I will try and get a copy of the recording.

Y_Not - I've just played the track (should have done it earlier! it's a long time since I've listened to the record). The tune is Sous Les Ciels de Paris and I'm sure it's possible to find this on the net. I'll have a quick look and get back to you.

I've found a powertab version online and created a pdf (it's a guitar line with chords + guitar tab). Let me have an email address as per my PM and you can have that along with the recording.

You'll find a lot of lyric sets on the net and there are also recordings and at least one video either under the title Sous les Ciels de Paris or under the English title Under Paris Skies. (I think I also came across backing chords to play along with too).

Tony Hall's recording now available on CD (Free Reed Records). I have a copy, and having lost the vinyl years ago it was like a reunion with a long lost friend.

Yes. I know this song. I'd like to have the complete lyrics in French....
one couplet closes a verse in English"...for the Seine has gone a wooing
and it's Paris is her bride.
I'd also like the sheet music in cello clef.

We had that Kingston Trio album, and that was the song we sang when we scattered mom's ashes into the Seine last year. Great song. Would like to know the one you-all are actually talking about...
