14 Nov 10 - 02:55 PM (#3032033) Subject: RE: Gaspe Reel mid From: GUEST,Tom Bliss It just keeps reverting to Forum Home if I ask my questions. Trying without the clickies Just researching this - (links above both dead) This is the best known version, yes? http://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/sfo/music/003782.HTM - early recording by Bernard Morin - but did he write it? And then there's this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hv5q2MA5fX8 feistier all round. Anyone know if this one is correctoly named (i.e. are there two Gaspé Reels?) If so, who wrote this one, if known? Thanks Tom PS How did all these websites get set up in way that discourage correct attribution? Grrr! |
14 Nov 10 - 05:23 PM (#3032171) Subject: RE: Gaspe Reel mid From: Stewart Tom, Your first selection from traditionalmusic.co.uk is the one. It's discussed on The Fiddler Companion as GASPÉ REEL [1] (Reel de Gaspé). It's also in Silberberg (Tunes I Learned at Tractor Tavern), 2002; pg. 50, and Brody (Fiddler's Fakebook), 1983; pg. 116. It's recorded on by Bill Spence with Fennig's All-Star on "The Hammered Dulcimer" (that pretty much nails it down). Here is the midi file. The third part (C, as played in The Fiddler's Fakebook) is from "Money Musk." Cheers, S. in Seattle |
14 Nov 10 - 05:29 PM (#3032176) Subject: RE: Gaspe Reel mid From: GUEST,Tom Bliss Thanks Stewart. I'm curious to know why the second tune is so named. Maybe it merely hails from Gaspé, in which case I'd love to know it's 'reel' name (sorry). I'm looking for stylistic connections with (French speaking) Jersey in the Channel Islands - from whence generations of islanders fished, traded and settled in Gaspé. |
14 Nov 10 - 05:52 PM (#3032188) Subject: RE: Gaspe Reel mid From: SylviaN The version that Keith plays on his CD "Well Seasoned" (with Ralphie) is from a recording he heard of Leadbelly playing the tune on a two-row Pokerwork melodeon. |

15 Nov 10 - 07:55 AM (#3032564) Subject: RE: Gaspe Reel mid From: mandotim I'm playing this tune a lot at the moment, it sits really well on the mandolin. One issue I have is that the first time I heard it was by Chris Leslie, and his version has a distinct 'lilt' or 'dotted rhythm', and sounds more like a speeded up hornpipe to my ears. I then heard it done by a bluegrass/old timey oufit, and they played it as a straight up reel. This is messing my playing up, as I play the tune in one style and hear bits of the other in my head (and vice versa). Is there a definitive approach to this tune anywhere? Tim |
15 Nov 10 - 08:12 AM (#3032583) Subject: RE: Gaspe Reel mid From: GUEST,Tom Bliss I guess a good guide would be the many YouTube versions by people from that part of the world. This is probably the definitive version. Tom |

22 Dec 10 - 11:26 AM (#3059354) Subject: RE: Gaspe Reel mid From: GUEST, Tom Bliss Right, I need to find out if this less-well known tune, which may well not in fact be called La Reel Gaspé, is trad or not - or more importantly if it is public domain or not. La Reel Gaspé - or Whatever? I have it from the band that it might have come from/via Yvon Mimeault, the wonderful left-handed fiddler from Quebec. I have tried to contact Yvon, but not been able to get through. Does anyone here know if this tune ever goes by any other title? Does anyone know who wrote it and/or if it is public domain or not? Does anyone have any way of contacting Yvon. Many thanks Tom |
