But 11.40 pm finish was way, way too late, bearing in mind that some of us had a 75-minute drive home along winding country roads and work in the morning. Time to come up with a slicker format and move to a more accessible venue - Lincoln Drill Hall, Trinity Arts Centre?? (all IMHO of course) S:0) |

13 Oct 07 - 05:10 AM (#2170134) Subject: RE: BBC Radio Lincolnshire Folk Song Comp From: Big Al Whittle This is my song. It was called Skegness and that's what its about. It didn't get anywhere and my wife reckons its not all that good ('not one of your better songs'). But it says some of the things I feel - a certain tenderness towards a brash seaside resort. http://www.bigalwhittle.co.uk/id23.html Rik Palieri one of the judges came up to me afterwards and was very kind and conciliatory - saying perhaps it needed a little work - it sounded like two songs to him. I have a suspicion - neither of them would have been one of my better songs! big al whittle |
13 Oct 07 - 06:58 AM (#2170166) Subject: RE: BBC Radio Lincolnshire Folk Song Comp From: Rockhen Just listened to your song, Al. I liked it and it definitely summed up my memories of family visits to skeggie, as a kid. I could smell the chips, honest! I guess, people being the strange creatures they are, you will have to wait until they pull down all the tatty, brash places there and build a brand new designer Skegnessville...Then nostalgia will really kick in and maybe after another 20 years, your song will be considered a real classic. Bit of a sod though, isn't it? You got any about the Winter Gardens in Cleethorpes? :-) Great song, Al. I always enjoy your songs because they feel like a real personal 'take' on their subjects. PS save us a chip, will ya?! |

13 Oct 07 - 07:04 AM (#2170173) Subject: RE: BBC Radio Lincolnshire Folk Song Comp From: Backwoodsman Al, it was a very good song indeed, and a brave attempt at doing something structurally different from the 'normal' sort of song in praise of childhood and memories of it. And, of course, being an Al Whittle song, that's exactly what I would expect! I was surprised that it wasn't placed in the first three, but that's maybe an indicator of the unusually high standard of the entries - not so much a comment on your song, more of a comment on them all? You have a unique way of expressing yourself Al, keep right on 'doing it your way'. And Drahn 'em In The Bath! :-) S:0) |
13 Oct 07 - 07:37 AM (#2170185) Subject: RE: BBC Radio Lincolnshire Folk Song Comp From: Rasener I second what Rockhen and BWM say. You have a unique style Al so stick with it. |
13 Oct 07 - 11:08 AM (#2170286) Subject: RE: BBC Radio Lincolnshire Folk Song Comp From: Rockhen I haven't heard the other entries, so was only commenting on Al's and not detracting from other people's songs. I am sure the quality of all the songs was high. I think these type of competitions are always difficult to judge because it is a personal taste thing. Each set of judges will approach from a different angle and have different opinions. Congratulations to ALL those who got off their backsides and entered, this year, or in the past. I must admit it is good to think of NEW songs being written with our county in mind. I love Lincolnshire! |

Just got an e-mail, they have decided to give me my own page on the Skegness website - I'll be a bit like The Embassy Ballroom, or The Seal Sanctuary or Butlins Holiday Camp! And that page will be linked to my website! Hi di hi! All you upholders of the folk tradition! PS No its not Whacko - that was a TV series with Jimmy Edwards about a cane wielding brute of a Headmaster. As it was the 1950's, (an age when beating children was considered quite a hoot), it was a comedy. Anyway thanks for your interest in my mispent career. |

Which reminded me of a naughty postcard from the old days. there are these two ladies walking down Skegness pier, and they pass a man wearing very tight swimming trunks. And the first lady says, Phew! What a long pier! And the second lady says - Yes and he had a nice smile as well. |
17 Oct 07 - 08:00 PM (#2173288) Subject: RE: BBC Radio Lincolnshire Folk Song Comp From: Tim Leaning Hey Al, gLandlady slams folk song over free drinks barmaid « Previous « PreviousNext » Next » View GalleryA LANDLADY has hit out at an award given to a musician for a song he wrote about a former barmaid at her pub. Guitarist and singer Dick Appleton, from Grimsby, last week won the BBC Radio Lincolnshire Folk Awards with a song called Miller's Daughter about a barmaid who gave away free drinks at the Miller's Daughter pub in Northgate. Deborah Burgess, owner of the Miller's Daughter, said: "I haven't heard the song at all but obviously I'm a bit miffed." She added: "I think it's disgusting how people can make someone who stole from their employer to be some sort of hero." Mr Appleton, who has been writing songs for 50 years, said he read a newspaper story about the barmaid and decided to write a song about it. He said: "It's not judgemental at all - it's just a documentation of the events." Mrs Burgess said the barmaid was not a modern day Robin Hood and thought the decision to give the song an award was 'despicable.' In February this year, Dawn O'Loughlin, then 36 and living in Queen Street, was ordered to pay £500 compensation to her former employers at the Miller's Daughter. At Louth Magistrates Court she admitted giving away 346 pints worth £828 while working at the pub. Last Updated: 16 October 2007 2:21 PM Page 1 of 1 Well thats folk for you aint it? FOlk controvesy. 18 Oct 07 - 02:54 AM (#2173421) Subject: RE: BBC Radio Lincolnshire Folk Song Comp From: Big Al Whittle Denise (my wife) heard the song and straightaway said, that's the winner, and what Rik Palieri said presenting the prize surely hit the nail on the head. It was right there in the tradition of country/folk songs writing about something that happened in his own community. AND Dick had all the skills in language in music and language to make it jump out at you. Still I suppose he ought to be pretty good after 50 years! Whatever you do - you offend somebody. Nobody ever kicked a dead dog, as they say. |
18 Oct 07 - 03:09 AM (#2173425) Subject: RE: BBC Radio Lincolnshire Folk Song Comp From: Rasener Maybe Dick should be giving the money to Mrs Burgess the victim, then it might be OK. I don't agree with rewarding the offender. |

The Landlady needs to lighten up - she got her revenge when the girl was prosectuted and convicted as a felon. Our history and culture is full of ne'er-do-wells who are, or have been, celebrated as heroes - Robin Hood, Dick Turpin, Margaret Thatcher (who was actually Robin Hood in reverse, but is held as a heroine for kicking Argie ass in Las Malvinas) to name but three. Congratulations to Dick Appleton for a great song in the Great British Tradition. IMHO! |

Lincolnshire is, (according to some gormless man-hating pillock in the Fackin' Sarf-East) an 'non-place' along the railway line between the north-east and the south east of England, where men are neanderthals and nothing of any value ever happens. I pointed out to her that I am old and embittered by years of rejection and artistic frustration, and I thought she would get a more balanced view from John Blanks, Stitherum, Paul and Angela - all who have won it and of course Tom Lane, who organises it. I gave her Stitherum's website (as its public), but I wouldn't give out such contact details as I have for the other people without their agreement. I wonder if those other three - paul and angela, Tom and John Blanks could get back to me with their details if you want me to pass them on. |
