03 Oct 07 - 06:49 PM (#2163181) Subject: Julius Margolin Tribute Concert 10/19 From: georgemann Hello: I hope this listserv won't mind this announcement, but we're honoring folksinger Julius Margolin (a Veterans for Peace member and labor activist for 70+ years) with a concert featuring some of the best labor/folk/antiwar singers we know! Info below. Thanks, George Mann Here's the basic background info: Anne Feeney, emma's revolution, Jon Fromer, Elise Bryant, Francisco Herrera, NYC Labor Chorus and more at this upcoming event. Thanks for helping to spread the word. As some of you know, labor and antiwar activist Julius Margolin (who turned 91 in August!), is dealing with some health issues that may affect his plans to keep singing and agitating till he hits 100. These are serious and we don't yet know whether any type of treatment will be beneficial. It involves leukemia and his heart, both of which are giving him problems. This longtime activist has made labor/antiwar/anti-Bush music with me (George Mann) since 1998 and we have toured the country while also producing the three-CD series of anti-Bush compilations, named "Hail to the Thief!" Julius has been a union and antiwar activist since the 1930s, but also served with honor in the Merchant Marine from 1940 to 1949. So we have launched a scholarship fund in his name, and a kickoff concert on October 19 and showing of his film "A Union Man" on October 20 (info below), for the fund, which will be administered through his union local, to help send young unionists to the G reat Labor Arts Exchange and the Western Workers Labor Heritage Festival, two annual festivals which celebrate labor culture and inspire/recharge those artists who create it. Many of them have been featured on our "Hail to the Thieves" CDs and our own songs over the years. Info is below, but for anyone who wants to make a contribution to the scholarship fund, you may also send a check or money order made out to "Julius Margolin Scholarship Fund" and mailed to: Local 52 IATSE Attn: Eileen 326 West 48th St. New York, NY 10036 PLEASE indicate whether you are buying tickets (and give a return address to mail them to) or just making a donation. Donations of $50 or more will be acknowledged in the concert program on Octob er 19 a nd anyone donating $50 or more will receive a copy of the "FINAL/DIRECTOR'S CUT" of the documentary film "A Union Man." We are finally completing this one-hour documentary film about Julius's life and work (with bonus footage!) and will release it in late October. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me at georgemann@att.net. Thanks for all your support and help with this endeavor. Julius is truly a wonderful spirit and he has brought so much inspiration and joy to people-- now it's time for us to give back.
