Sultana story/Arkansas Democrat Gazette

I could not decide whether to put this in the Sultana lyrics thread or the riverboat songs thread, so opted for a new thread so that it won't get lost.

Sunday's Arkansas Democrat Gazette has a nice picture of the Sultana taken the day before it exploded, and a lengthy story about the event, which occurred 134 years ago Tuesday.

Here is the section which contains the picture and the story. Click on the third story summary for the account.

This will only be on line until next Sunday. I will post the PDF file when it goes online.

The PDF file is located here, page two. I thought perhaps there would be more pictures and maybe a sidebar article, but there is little more of interest, other than a map and a picture of two people standing on Chicken Island. All in all, unless you just happen to like PDF files, it probably isn't worth the trouble. It took seven minutes to download on my machine.

You might want to read Salecker's history of the Sultana tragedy: Disaster on the Mississippi which came out in 1996.

I had never heard of the Sultana until I became a professional firefighter and was "turned on" to the book "Romance and Firefighting". The technology of the 19 century would have any OSHA agent pulling his hair out. Boilers exploding, child labor, fires, train wreaks, mine disasters, Whaling death losses...just name it. I've seen the picture of the loaded Sultana before and I can't fanthom that many men even willing to travel on that crowded a boat. Then again, after reading my great great grandfathers civil war letters from Knoxville Tenn to his home in Ohio, maybe I can. Just a thought.
