07 Oct 07 - 09:01 PM (#2166187) Subject: RE: BS: Tofurkey From: GUEST,ed The Onion reports that a virulent strain of soy flu has been traced to a single tofurkey at a Bay Area food-processing factory. An investigation of Green Earth Foods has located the bird-shaped loaf of firm bean curd from which the infection originated, said Dr. Julie L. Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. To prevent further spreading of the disease, all tofurkeys in Northern California are being quarantined and destroyed. Gerberding said it appears that the soy virus was not transmitted to the factory's Spaghetti & Wheatballs Microwaveable Entree division. |

07 Oct 07 - 11:06 PM (#2166240) Subject: RE: BS: Tofurkey From: open mike actual news story about a food recall involving tofu products. Consumers told not to eat some Soy Deli products By E-R Staff Article Launched: 10/04/2007 12:08:15 AM PDT Consumers were warned Wednesday not to eat certain Soy Deli brand tofu products because they may be contaminated with dangerous bacteria. The products can be identified with date codes of Nov. 28, 2007, or Jan. 28, 2008, or any date code earlier than those. According to the state Department of Public Health, the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause serious health problems. The affected Soy Deli brand products include: # 8-ounce packages of Five Spice Baked Tofu, Hickory Baked Tofu, Honey Sesame Baked Tofu, Teriyaki Baked Tofu, Savory Baked Tofu, Mesquite Smoked Tofu, Hawaiian Style Fried Tofu, and Nigari Vacuum Pack Tofu. # 6-ounce packages of Original Burger, Garden Burger, Barbeque Burger, Teriyaki Burger, and Cajun Burger. # 12-ounce packages of Water Packed Tofu-Orange, Water Packed Tofu-Blue, and Water Packed Tofu-Red. # 16-ounce packages of Quong Hop Water Packed Tofu-Red. # 30-ounce packages of Nigari Tofu. # 10-pound packages of Bulk Nigari Tofu, Nigari Tofu-Medium, and Nigari Tofu-54 piece. # Nigari Tofu-Firm (10 pounds and 25 pounds). The recalled products were distributed to supermarkets and natural-food stores on the West Coast and throughout the Midwest. In California, the products were distributed to the following chain stores statewide: Albertson's, Andronico's, Lunardi, Mollie Stones, Pavilion, PW Markets, Ralph's, Safeway, Save Mart, Stater Bros., Vons and Whole Foods Market. No illnesses have been reported because of these products. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms, such as fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, the bacteria can cause miscarriages and still births among pregnant women and serious and sometimes fatal infections in the elderly, people with weakened immune systems, and newborns. Consumers who become ill should call the doctor. The recalled products should be thrown away or returned to the store. Last month, a recall of some Soy Deli products was initiated after the Washington State Department of Agriculture's Food Safety Program detected the bacteria in a package of Soy Deli tofu. This week, the manufacturer, Quong Hop and Co. of South San Francisco expanded the recall to include more products. Consumers with questions can call Quong Hop at 1-650-553-9900. |

This was over 30 years ago. We were ahead of the times. Now there are garden burgers, boca burgers, etc. Ours were basically soy beans, rice, oats, carrots and soy sauce and miso. One of the best soy products I know of is veggie roni...by Yves, which transforms a vegetarian pizza into one that has a pepperoni taste! and of course there are all sorts of tofu pups, and Not Dogs and other soy products that are like wieners..or hot dogs. |
