O.K., I'll go along with this. But most of the folks that contribute to Mudcat are not folks that are in the learning process but into the teaching to there children and grand children. Right?? Where am I going with this?, Not a fu....g clue , except to say that a lot of us flower children, baby boomer's are posting threads that make me wonder. I think that we are having a problem in accepting growing old. Beer (adrien). |

10 Oct 07 - 02:00 AM (#2167776) Subject: RE: BS: Stupid Thread From: Little Hawk Most people do have a problem with accepting growing old... It's a recurrent problem with every succeeding generation. Even dogs find it quite difficult, which is why old dogs get crabby and growl more than they once did when bothered by younger dogs. As for rock and roll, that's an expression Black musicians came up with and it refers to sex. But we all know that, right? |

10 Oct 07 - 05:34 AM (#2167844) Subject: RE: BS: Stupid Thread From: Bryn Pugh I dunno, on this side of the Pond. Yes, I was one of the Flower Children, well fucking faded now, believe me. But there are advantages to being over 60 and, thank the goddess, still working. Free medical prescriptions ; half price gigs ; me bus pass (the UK is about to introduce free travel for crumblies - it does precious little else for us). The greatest thing, though, is the grandbrats. |

10 Oct 07 - 08:46 AM (#2167929) Subject: RE: BS: Stupid Thread From: jacqui.c I'm quite enjoying growing older - better than the alternative. I reckon that I'm well on the way to purple hat time and can get away with more outrageous behaviour on the basis of age. Actually, I'm getting quite excited by the white hair showing through - can't wait for it all to go white - no need for a purple hat then - I'll just use purple dye. I agree with Bryn - best part of the deal is the grandchildren. |

In a couple weeks I'm supposed to get hearing aids; I don't mind -- I'm still around to hear things. "Every day above ground is a good one." |

10 Oct 07 - 09:34 AM (#2167977) Subject: RE: BS: Stupid Thread From: Rapparee Yes, they are supposed to help by letting me hear things I can't right now (like certain ranges of music) and thereby help mask the tinnitus. I wouldn't be surprised about Shatner. LH says he has everything. |

10 Oct 07 - 12:15 PM (#2168119) Subject: RE: BS: Stupid Thread From: Ebbie I'm coming on 72. One of the things that I find most remarkable is the continual jolt of being reminded that at this age losing contemporaries is not only not surprising, it is normal. |

10 Oct 07 - 12:58 PM (#2168152) Subject: RE: BS: Stupid Thread From: PoppaGator I don't think I have a problem with aging (I turn 60 in just less than a month, and am glad of it), but I DO have a problem accepting the idea that I'm gonna die someday. Having survived a bout with cancer a couple of years ago, I've probably given the prospect of exiting the earth a bit more thought than many of my contemporaries, but I still can't really digest the idea. MMario hit the nail on the head a couple of hours ago when he wrote "I think that we are undergoing the first generation where a majority of people **EXPECT** to be active and reasonably healthy into their upper decades." I would add that we also **EXPECT** an increased life-expectancy in comparison with earlier generations ~ even recent generations, like that of our parents. It is already increasingly common for people to reach the age of 100, and forty years from now (when my 100th b-day will roll around, whether or not I'm here to celebrate it), centenarians will almost surely be even more plentiful. Still in all, no matter how long each of us may survive, it's absolutely inevitable that, sooner or later, all things must pass... |

10 Oct 07 - 03:23 PM (#2168267) Subject: RE: BS: Stupid Thread From: Ebbie Oh, I dunno about that. I realize that no one has ever lived forever - but somebody has to be first. (*G* Old joke) |

10 Oct 07 - 03:49 PM (#2168274) Subject: RE: BS: Stupid Thread From: Little Hawk Yeah, MMario hit it right on the head there! ;-) We were a generation with rather odd expectations when it came to aging... Everyone feels immortal when they're young. My theory is that that is because the human soul IS immortal, so to feel immortal is natural in people...and in animals too...because animals likewise have immortal souls. Everything has an immortal soul, in my opinion. (and it's strictly my opinion, so don't sweat it if you think I'm wrong...it doesn't really matter which one of us is right or wrong about something like that) (so we don't need to argue about it) Now when an immortal soul finds itself in a body that is aging and wearing out...it's not comfortable with the situation. It's frustrating, it's often discouraging, it seems to fly in the face of everything you instinctively feel about your own identity. We don't believe we'll die, because we don't die. That's my opinion. But our bodies sure as hell do. I will be quite willing to "go" when this body has become unviable, because I will regard it as personal liberation to go at that time. I am not this body. I'm the occupant of this body. When I'm gone, you'll know it...if you're there to see it. |

10 Oct 07 - 07:54 PM (#2168430) Subject: RE: BS: Stupid Thread From: GUEST, Ebbie I have remembered something I read somewhere. "You can't believe that you will die? Go find a photo of yourself taken 20 years ago. Take a good look. Now go to the mirror. Still don't believe that you will die?" |

10 Oct 07 - 08:30 PM (#2168458) Subject: RE: BS: Stupid Thread From: Little Hawk My father apparently didn't believe he would die....right up until almost the very day he did. The idea was seemingly just unacceptable to him. It was plainly obvious to me for about two years that he was on the way out pretty soon, but if you broached the subject in any way he would not discuss it except to dismiss it by saying: "I don't plan on dying." Well, who does? But he still did anyway. |

11 Oct 07 - 07:05 AM (#2168685) Subject: RE: BS: Stupid Thread From: Bryn Pugh I think very much as Little Hawk does. I shall pass to death and the ecstasy of the Goddess until it shall please Her to find me another box of tricks to house the essential me. I hope too to meet my beloved again, in the next one. In the meantime, as a faded Flower Child, the three bits of advice posted in another thread apply : never waste the chance to pee ; never trust a fart ; and never ignore a hard on (chance'd be a fine thing !). |
