Scollay Square was the downtown (seeder? but not to seedy) entertainment center of Boston with it's famous burlesque houses as opposed to the more refined Theater District at the other end of downtown. During the late 50's & early 60's Boston was revamped. Scollay Square was cut out with a scalpel & replace with the newer sterile Goverment Center. At the same time, a few blocks towards the river, the whole of the West End neighborhood was ripped out in such a way the all residents were displaced in favor of high rent highrisers & Boston's West End disappeared & is no more. When goverment center went up & the area was cleansed & it shifted the entertainment back to the Theater District but what was once not to seedy turned into what became the Combat Zone. A place of comfort for those needing release while serving in the Armed Forces & later becoming the adult entertainment capital for the eastern part of the state. It has only in the past decade or so that the area's gone back to it's older & more pleasent self. Sorry if it's not relative, Barry |

As I recall the singer was Rick Tenery. Not sure of the spelling on the last name, probably has an "I" and maybe another "N" in it somewhere. It was one of a group of specialty songs Glick used. Others included "Babaluci", and "The Piece of Baloney Song". I'm amazed that even though the original posts here are from 10 years ago, someone else posted here just yesterday. |

I noticed that your writers all have the composer name spelled wrong? Rik was born in Boston's South End and Baptized at Holy Cross Cathederal and graduated from jamaica Plain High School. A plaque honoring Rik Tinory was erected in 1976 at 2 Center Plaza. In Boston's Scollay Square 10,000 people attended the gala. Rik Tinory prompted Boston City Councilor Albert "Dapper " O'Neil, Mayor Kevin White and numerous dignitaries to change the name of Government Center back to the original historic name of Scollay Square.The history of which is documented in Boston's Official Gazzette. In 1979 Rik was the Executive Producer and recorded the historic visit of Pope John Paul II The song has found a home at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington .D.C. The Combat Zone has been done in by the expansion of Chinatown. Just today I had dim sum in an enormous Chinese restaurant that (I was told) had previously been a gay porno movie theater -- and before that, a legitimate theater. Some years ago, when that process had recently started, I wrote an Elegy for the Combat Zone: Farewell, O street of sleaze, For even sleaze must pass.
