Shanty/Forebitter Session for October(NH

This coming Saturday, 20 October is the date for the monthly sing at the Press Room from 3:30 to 7:30 PM.

We're looking forward to welcoming our special guests from England, Two Black Sheep and a Stallion. On another thread they allowed as they're thinking about doing a dozen songs, and I for one, am more than willing to limit my own input to this end.

Arriving early at the Press Room is fine, but remember that there's a jazz session ongoing until 3:00, and a very good jazz session it is.

See you Saturday - Tom & Linn

I'm going to try and make it there as well - depends on energy levels and whether Mary is driving down.

Judy and I will be there for sure. Two Black Sheep and a Stallion lead some fine drinking songs. Demand that they do "The Crawl."

If anyone wants us to hand-deliver demo CD's to Australia, we'll be happy to deliver.

Charley Noble

Maybe I can learn Keith Marsden's "Doin' the Manch" by Saturday...

And the Press Room is now smoke-free!

Jeri-

Two Black Sheep and a Stallion also do a fine job of leading "Doin' the Manch" as well.

As I said in the thread by 2BS&S, I will be unable to make this month's shanty sing...

I'm disappointed to miss the guests from across the pond, but it's the girlfriend's birthday, so romantic obligations out of state prohibit my attendance.

Luckily, Tom was kind enough to give me dispensation on Friday night when I told him I couldn't make it...I'd hate to miss the session AND be considered AWOL. ;-)

I thought that Ron would do the Manch, it aint too PC, do you all know what a chinese chippy is? In fact I am sure he will sing it, although he sings a coal mining song as a solo, "Albert Berry", which he sang at Heather Woods place the night before we left NYC, that left goose bumps and hair standing on end and I think is one of his most powerfully performed songs. Hey Charley, we plan to do our rendition of Yangtse River Shanty will that be ok? It is probably the first and, if not, the second song we write in to all our sets, the first is usually a "warm up" song like "My Emma", it is very slightly different in the melody and a tad pacy but then it is our way. Really looking forward to meeting up with you all
Pete

Chippie? Chip shop? Employee of same? Girl of some sort of repute, ill or otherwise?

I know a chunk of the song, and political correctness is not something those who sing sea music (or those who hang around with them) are overly concerned with. No 'N' words, though. Marsden's song is a little insulting to Chinese people who own food establishments, but much more so to drunk people, people from Manchester, and possibly dogs.

Yes, I'd love to hear another rendition of the "Yangtse River Shanty." It's nice to know that there is life yet in Hamish Maclaren's old song.

Barry-

We might even try a "Yangtse River" run-off at the Press Room, and then plan an international festival in China!

But I am interested in hearing what Two Black Stallions and a Sheep come up with.

I've got several new songs I need to try out. Maybe I'll try my version of "Bumboats;" Neil's words are closer to Burt Franklin Jenness's original poem, our chorus is similiar, but we have entirely different melodies for the verse.

What Barry, we all start off together and first to finish is the winner, as I have heard it Barry 2BS&S and your version would be neck and neck.

Peter, where did you first pick up the version you do. I got mine from Charlie but it's not quite the same, I adapted it somewhat.
Another Peter, from Gloucester (US) with "3 Sheets To Te Wind" said he'll do his but I'm not sure hwere he got his from, maybe John Roberts, if he did he too adapted it as did John.
Charlie, I believe Dannt Spooner is doing a version too, correct me if I'm wrong), so we'll be wanting his version too.
An ex band mate of Charlie's (Alison Freedman) has recorded another version. very slow & eh, romantic? maybe.

Barry,
Basically Charley's, we heard Barbara Cuenin sing it with Joy and Maggie from the Jonson's at a party at Al and Barbra's place on long island, Charlie was there, then we listened to Charley's cd, words are Charley's but the melody got tweaked by a couple of notes and a bit of pace injected into it. We sang a snippet to Charley at Kens place (Shanty Cabin) in Preston and Charley said it was similiar to your version

Well, the next person who records it better credit everyone. It's obviously an international effort. I've been forwarding all your names to Hamish's daugther, who resides on Malta, and will probably sue us all for royalties.

We should be on our way north with a few other "Sheets" by 2 pm. If the rain holds off, we have a sing at the Clam Festival in Essex.
Looking forward to seeing everyone again. We were in Springfield, MA last weekend and had a lot of fun with some very nice people. Will explain at the Press Room. Damn it Peter....listen to the woman on the GPS!!!!!

And for those of you who were at Mary's last year...."sheep need to be very cautious, especially at the breakfast table!!!

By the way who has that picture????

Jeri?

And Mary.....I look like JC's brother? WOW. He's not heavy he's my brother kind of comes to mind.

Are we going to do a "four bitter" of Yangtze today....back to back....just like on the radio....that would be cool. I have a great DVD of the fifth person doing it with Barry. Well at least singing the song with him.
And again, thanks to Tom, Linn, Jeff, Barb and all the others who made Portsmouth Maritime Festival a great success. Next year will be even better....I'm sure of that!!!
See you all soon
Doryman and his mate

Great session at the Press Room but little time this morning for details. Off to Sinsull's house party at noon with more music, including Two Black Sheep & Stallion.

At least we're assuming the flock/herd will be making their way out of Portsmouth to South Portand for the party. When we last spotted them after the Shanty Session they were regaling the taproom at Molly Malone's, and there are at least two dozen more pubs for them to sample in Portsmouth; they had already gone through haf a dozen or so before the Press Room.

They did sing "The Manch" and "The Crawl." What great songs!

Charley Noble

Great session!

No time to write more -- and just got back from South Portland. Also a grand musical afternoon, but no time to write.

Great company, great music...and food and drink, too.

What a weekend!

Fabulous fabulous evening.....Barry, I will ignore your cheap shot about wine --- it is well known that I NEVER drink too much wine -- it is pure coincidence that my husband and son turned up to pick me up ensuring I would not have to drive.......!!!!!!!!
