BS: Baa, Baa, black sheep (Swiss racism)

There will be elections soon in Switzerland. One party, the SVP, makes a very aggressive election campaign against foreigners (and Greens, and liberal judges,...). The UN has already branded parts of the campaign (e.g., a poster showing three white sheep kicking out a black sheep) as racist.

This online-game (Zottel saves Switzerland) can give you an idea of their campaign. Click below on "Zum Spiel", choose the upper right game 2, choose the highest number, and click on "Spiel starten". Your task is to "kick back" as many black sheep as possible while letting the white sheep pass, of course.

Each country has right-fringe parties who think and act similarly. But what makes me angry and sad at the same time about that awful campaign is that the SVP is the largest party in Switzerland and is considered a conservative center party.

Usually, I like to think that from conservative to neo-fascist or racist is still quite a distance but here I fail to see any difference. No wonder the German neo-fascists have already adapted some of the SVP posters for their purposes.

That is sick and sad and alarming, Wolfgang.

Having had a Grandfather born in Switzerland I am horrified to hear of this. You always think of the Swiss as being quaint cheese and clock making people known for their neutrality. Maybe being the world's banker has corrupted them.

Well, it's only a decade or so ago that women got the vote in one of the Cantons. 30 years ago or so, when most of the rest of the civilised world was experiencing currrency inflation, the Swiss currency was increasing in value, partly because (unlike most other countries) they could "export their unemplyment"; all the Turkish gastarbeiters were at risk from the Swiss version of Enoch Powell.

We're so used to thinking of Swiss neutrality that we tend to forget they're really just like us.

Cheers, Rowan

Sad.

Racism is universal, as Rowan infers, and difficult to control. In the BBC News, yesterday the cricket match between Australia and India (held in India) was marred because Indian spectators made remarks and monkey-like gestures at Black Australian players. Prosecutions are being talked about, but are doubtful.

Children of American soldiers and Japanese women were not and are not accepted socially in Japan.

Religion also enters into it; Belgium is a prime example and shows that long term tolerance is not enough, feelings may seem well-hidden, but Walloons and Flemings, both white, are inching towards separation. (Muslim immigrants are not acceptable to either).

It is hard enough to control genocide-minded groups in the Congo and elsewhere and that is where attention should be focused; insults and snubs toward those perceived as different should be deplored and condemmed, but will never be wholly controlled.
