Really looking foward to seeing what this year has to offer in the finals. There's been some great new talent come from these awards like Last Orders, Bodega, Uiscedwr. Its a really great platform for young and emerging acts. Mike Harding is announcing the finalists on Wednesday on his show.

Doe... you're feeling "honed"??? (Sorry, couldn't resist .... forgive me!) Glad to hear it... Sorry - but I'm going to miss your various outings, thanks to prior engagements - but am still looking forward to hearing One Too Many Strings (and Matt's singing - grin)in action SOMEWHERE before too long. Good luck on 7th Dec ... Irene

If Too Many Strings played a gig with One String Loose would you have One too many strings loose?

No -surely if there was just one string loose, and you had too many strings in the first place, then it would have to be strung just about right ? Now I realise why I didn't take the first year philosophy course at uni!

Does the BBC have a place where you can listen to a snippet of each performer? That would be highly interesting, especially to an old fogey like me: I have to admit I haven't heard most of them.

Not sure if I'm allowed to put links in here but I have researched the bands and come up with the following where u can hear some of the music

http://www.myspace.com/jackmcneill for the singer songwriter and fiddler

http://www.myspace.com/onestringloose for the welsh band

Hey Dogan Mehmet has already put his myspace so thats handy - see above message. Thanks for that Dogan, i will have a listen.

If anyone can find samples of the others music it'd be appreciated.

If one was tou loose would you call it Lautrec?

But speaking of the Young Folk Awards, whatever happend to that rather fine fiddle and vocal duo who won it about 10 years back, I think one was called Oliver Bootle.....

And was the other one Ben Dauncey?

The YFA has been running only since 1998 when the Smoothies got their claws into it. Before that it was the Young Tradition Award of which I have almost total non-recall except that Damien Barber won it in the early 1990s.

Tim van Eyken won the first YFA, a decision with which no-one could possibly argue, but in subsequent years I have been in constant variance with the judging panel. Not that there was anything bad about their choices but that the results were clearly pre-ordained: this year has got to be a solo instrumentalist/fiddle melodeon band/Irish/Scottish . . . or whatever. In fact, if they jus published tha year's criteria beforehand, no-one need bother going. Including the other contestants.

Ah, yes, I had forgotten about the handover to Smoothiechops.

I did a bit of rummaging

Oliver Bootle still has a website but the details on it expire in 1998!

There is a Ben Dauncey with Ravensbourne Morris, and he did the 207 mile jig recently but I don't know if it's the same one - and one of them gets a mention on Tim Edey's Myspace.

Strange that two players of such ability should sink back into the murk. Anyone know any more?

Let's hope that this newly recognised talent is overlooked by the record company operating from Harrogate.

A record company accused by some of ripping off its artists.

More than that Richard.   A record company that claims to be a one-stop for FOLK artists! And to Carol, search the name DAVE BULMER in Mudcat and you may find you have a very long, very, very depressing read.

One String Loose have been doing the festivals here in Wales for the past 3-4 years at least. I have seen them at Pontardawe each year in fact thats one of the main reasons I go. They are still only around 15/16. See them if you can! They have done Wales proud!
