Got any idea of what you'd expect to pay for one today? The guitar is in excellent shape, he says. He doesn't know how old it is; he bought it about ten years ago and played it until the arthritis in his fingers and deteriorated hearing forced him to stop. |

I had the impression that the Guild company more-or-less specialized in 12-strings. Perhaps they made more of them (in comparison to their 6-string output) than Gibson or Martin, or maybe it's just that their 12s were more affordable than those sold by their competitors without being terribly inferior. I'm no expert on vintage guitars, however (except for the one that I have owned for years and do not intend to sell.) I'm sure that better answers will be forthcoming from habitual buyers/sellers who know the market inside-out. |

I've heard nothing but good things about the larger Guild 12 strings. So far I've never played a small bodied 12 string that I would want to own. YMMV. For my ears the bigger the 12 string the better. |

Unfortunatly Guild was bought out by a larger "International Corporation" a few years back. To make a long story short, the quality went down then they moved the operation to the other coast, (or somewere else anyway). If you've got a Guild over 10 years old, It's most likely a nice instrument. |

It was made around 1996 and plays very sweetly. It very rarely goes out of tune and the finger board is slim enough to get a thumb round easily. It has solid mahogany back and sides and was engineered to last so it is a big heavy instument. When I bought it I took it to a very critical local luthier who was happy not to charge me for checking it over as he couldnt find any fault with it. The action is very good. It was' and still is an excellent second hand buy. The day I bouhgt it i tried new Yamahas Martins ang Simon and Patricks and it sounded better than any of them. Kenny B |

He told me that he paid US $600 for it to a guy who was "between a hard place and a harder place" and that it's "[his] toy" -- children never touched it! He played it with six strings because of the arthritis that was developing when he got it. I've got a feeling that it's about the only thing of real value he has left and selling it would be like selling a much-loved child. If you play you can understand. He used to play with the "Old Time Fiddlers" -- a truly excellent local group of stringfolks who have been around a long time and try to preserve the local music -- and this tells me that he was quite good. They don't play for a fee, only for a donation -- we gave them $75 to play for an hour or so, and it was split among eight people. Since one of them drove a hundred miles to play, they don't make money out of it. (Undiscriminating, the group even includes banjos.) |

I love this big old guitar, and based on my experience, I would say they are the gold standard among production 12 strings. I have played Taylors, Gibsons, Seagulls, and many others. None have the same overall quality as my Guild. If you can't afford to have Nick Appollonia or Grit Laskin build you one, then grab one of the older Guilds. They are heavy buggers with that double truss rod, but the sound and playability is something. Mick |

He is, after all, 80 years old and has been crippled up with diabetes, heart problems, and now more heart problems. I'll ask him the next time I see him. Mine is balanced nicely and is pretty new. 12 strings can get pretty cumbersome in their sound so I like it strung light and tinkly. In the early days, Glenn Campbell popularized the 12 string. His second wife's kids pretty much took everything he had and sold it for drugs -- a couple of very very good hunting rifles, a handmade fly rod, a six-string Martin (he thinks it was a D-38), other things. The kids are in jail big-time, but the stuff is long gone. I think it's a damned shame, but he has lots of friends at the Library and he comes in whenever he can. I kid him about getting a sword cane or pretend to swipe his cane or hat and he knows it's me. Herb's just a good old guy who spent his life working for the Union Pacific and has gotten a raw deal at the end. We try to treat him well and he appreciates it. |

Even the new off shore Guilds, GADs, are superior instruments, dollar for dollar. My 63 F-30 is still a fine sounding guitar. My Martin's are nice but they aren't the Guild F 30. I was given a 64 Martin D 12-20 that is a tinny box compared to any Guild 12 I have played from a similar age. D |

He hadn't even got round to putting on the bottom strap button. I think I've said this somewhere else on this forum - but the build quality on this guitar is top- drawer. It has a good bright sound, with an action that's fine as it is out of the box. I personally don't think it sounds as good as my Martin 12 stringer, and I prefer the action of my 40 odd year Epiphone 12 stringer - but the Guild is young, and I know from experience that the sound will improve. One thing I have noticed, though. I normally put D'Addario 10's on all of my 12 stringers and I've always been happy with them. When I replaced what I think may have been the factory originals with the D'Addario 10's, the sound wasn't in the same class. The original strings were heavier. |
