As far as I know there were two CDs released by Castle/Essential as part of their Transatlantic reissues set. The first (ESMCD 409)contained the first, self-titled LP and So Cheerfully Round. The second (ESMCD 461) contained Galleries, plus all the tracks from the Chicken on a Raft EP and some (but not all) of the tracks from Royston & Heather's album No Relation. The Fledgling label released their Christmas-themed collaboration with Shirley Collins The Holly Bears the Crown (FLED 3006). I imagine the latter is still available. I don't know about the chances of reissues, but for what it's worth around the time of the Young Tradition CDs Castle/Essential also released the Mr Fox albums on CD. They've since reissued these in an improved package. One of the big shortcomings of the original reissues was the combining of two LPs on one CD, missing out tracks if the running time was too long, and NOT acknowledging these omissions. If they were mastered from vinyl that's news to me, but apparently this practise is more common than you'd think. Hope this helps |

YT stuff appears to be available from the Heater Wood associated site, also linked to on the other thread, but I do not know if it is from the original tapes or remastered from vinyl - and indeed I have not bought any recently so I do not know if it is in fact actually available. |

I don't think they sound like vinyl re-recorded, but don't have the finest of hearing myself. As to contents of the CDs, I don't have the vinyl to compare with, but at 22 tracks totaling 72 minutes I can't think that a huge amount was dropped on the Young Tradition/So Cheerfully Round disc, but would be interested to know what is missing. The Galleries/Chicken on a Raft/No Relation disc weighs in at 78 minutes, 30 tracks. I suspect that the No Relation part took a bit of a pruning, but would again be interested to know. Out of interest I looked the discs up on Amazon UK; both are available used, and someone is asking £131.84 for the second disc. Well I like them OK, but not that much; maybe I should be selling! |

The missing songs were The Cellar Door, Lovin' Bessie and Chaconne in G Minor. The Cellar Door is a sad loss, a John Clare poem set to music, excellent stuff. The best approach would surely have been to have added the Chicken on a Raft songs to the YT/So Cheerfully Round pairing (they'd probably have fitted) and to have Galleries and No Relation uncut on the second release. But that would have required someone at the CD label actually giving a shit. |

Their farewell concert in C# House in 1969 was a hoot. They had to give up singing as a trio to get jobs and make some money. They reformed especially in about 1974 to do a benefit for Clive Woolf at Hampstead Town Hall and get him a concertina. I'm sure Royston and Peter are rolling around rock'n'roll heaven at the idiocy of it all. |

Now thanks to Fellside some of his old LPs are getting reissued properly. I think it's a labour of love for Paul Adams, more power to his elbow! I don't think "Tell it like it was" will be seeing the light of day any time soon, unfortunately. |

Recently I borrowed The Fox Jumps Over the Parson's Gate (Topic, 1969) and was moved to make a wee 'visual presentation' by uniting the title track with the graphics that inspired it. I've mentioned this before, but I think it's especially relevant in this context. Have a look at: The Fox Jumps Over the Parson's Gate Also I put a couple of my own attempts at singing songs from the Bellamy / Kipling canon up on YouTube in the hope this would inspire some uploading of footage of the great man himself, but nothing thus far... Also yes they are currently out of print (out of press? what's the correct nomenclature here?). Castle occasionally reissues a YT track on other compilations. Fascinated by the John Peel listings - as I am sure would Chris Hogwood be (last I heard, he was head of the Boston Handel & Haydn Society) - he was the drummer (sorry, percussionist) on Galleries and never uttered a note!. David Munrow's Early Music Consort (David, Chris, Roddy and Adam Skeaping) were great fun to work with. Said it was the first session they'd ever done where they didn't have to wear suits. Heather |
