Tori Amos - anything to say about her?

I picked up a really inexpensive hard cover biography about this gal at the bookstore...seemed interesting. So then I watched a few videos of her on YouTube doing various songs. Hmmm. Well, she's obviously talented, but I find some difficulty relating to her songs, I guess. Or maybe it's her performance style. It hasn't quite "clicked" with me so far. I do have to say I like her rendition of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" better than Nirvana's, but that's not saying too much.

Anyone got any thoughts on Tori Amos?

An idiosyncratic genius cast in a similar mould to Kate Bush and Jane 'Issa' Siberry, perhaps; most defininetly an acquired taste, but my wife has a certain fondness for some of her stuff - The Beekeeper (2005) especially is amongst her best.

I think she actually recorded a Chas and Dave song about watching Spurs play.

Sometimes similar to Brittany in choice of undergarments.

Ellie Skinner's interpretation of Ms Amos's Me And A Gun is one of the most moving (and scary) things I have evr heard.

Yes, that's intense all right. Thanks for the link, Diane. I gather that Tori Amos tends to do some pretty intense stuff from what I've heard so far.

Very talented and idiosyncratic as mentioned before, and probably an acquired taste for many. Some of her powerful stuff, like Me and a Gun is written from personal experience. I love her versions of REM's Losing my Religion and Christine Perfect's Landslide.

I heard a very interesting interview with her on one of the extended discussion programs on NPR. I thought I'd like to pick up something of hers and give it a listen, but I haven't gotten around to it.

You have a point. I wait until I get to the Half Price bookstore and look through their CDs. I occasionally buy them new, but not often. I also pick up disks at the library to see if I like them well enough to buy them.

Ms. Amos does not really figure in my music - However I did see the following letter in this weekend's Boston Globe "Arts" section - and I quote it in total, and have no axe to grind:

What a Pip.
I agree with Joan Anderman's review of Tori Amos's act ("More theatrics than Magic in Amos show" - Living/Arts, Oct. 20). At best it was pathetic. Was she trying to be bad? Aside from not being able to decipher words, her screaming was hideous. Of all the performances I have witnessed, this will stand alone as being the benchmark for the worst. What was I thinking to spend $100?

I worked part time in a CD store between 1995-97 and one of the high school girls working there was really into Tori Amos at the beginning of the store's life (it closed in '97). By the end I asked her about new Tori recordings and she said she had seemed to outgrow her music. I think Ms. Amos' music was directed towards people of her age. I also think this girl, hearing from the store manager and me (old fart folky fans), about some of the music that we liked listened to some of that and it broadened her horizons.

Her glam rock album Why Can't Tori Read is a hoot and the song she co-wrote with Al Stewart, Charlotte Corday (on his Famous Last Words album)is brilliant.

Yes, there is something further to report about Tori Amos.

She took "The Light Princess," one of the children's-fantasy works by 19th-century author George MacDonald,
and made it into a musical for the theater.

The premiere run was not successful.
