Btw, somewhat off topic, I had the pleasure of meeting a 6 year old boy yesterday who said he had good "rememberies" of when he was little. I thought that was so precious, especially since this boy is in foster care and already has had experiences that no child should have. But he has good "rememberies". I would expect that we all have good rememberies of some times in our life. And we all have bad memories too. Music has always helped me make it through the times that aren't so good. |

Refrain But I also like these F.W.Faber words, as we sing it in the North American Welsh hymnal to the Caradog Roberts tune, In Memoriam. I went looking for a blue-clicky, as I doubt if the tune is familiar to people here; interestingly, I only found it as Sacred Harp music (tune in the 'tenor' line) here. Faber wrote the words, I guess, as 4 line verses, but we double them up to be 8 line verses to fit the tune. There's a wideness in God's mercy, Like the wideness of the sea; There's a kindness in His justice, Which is more than liberty. There is no place where earth's sorrows Are more felt than up in Heaven; There is no place where earth's failings Have such kindly judgment given. There is grace enough for thousands Of new worlds as great as this; There is room for fresh creations In that upper home of bliss. For the love of God is broader Than the measure of our mind; And the heart of the Eternal Is most wonderfully kind. I grew up also singing "Diadem" (the 'all hail the power" words) in the Welsh singing festivals – great stuff. One of many hymns that are big favourites with the ex-pat community. I've been listening (a lot!) recently to the Maddy Prior album, "Paradise Found" - hymns of Charles Wesley. I was much struck by the cover notes which include a long quote from John Wesley's preface to "A Collection of Hymns for the Use of the People Called Methodists", 1780. "May I be permitted to add a few words with regard to the poetry? Then I will speak to those who are judges thereof, with all freedom and unreserve. To these I may say, without offence, 1. In these hymns there is no doggerel; no botches; nothing put in to patch up the rhyme; no feeble expletives. 2. Here is nothing turgid or bombast, on the one hand, or low and creeping, on the other. 3. Here are no cant expressions; no words without meaning. Those who impute this to us know not what they say. We talk common sense, both in prose and verse, and use no word but in a fixed and determinate sense. 4. Here are, allow me to say, both the purity, the strength, and the elegance of the English language; and, at the same time, the utmost simplicity and plainness, suited to very capacity. Lastly, I desire men of taste to judge, (these are the only competent judges) whether there be not in some of the following hymns the true Spirit of Poetry, such as cannot be acquired by art and labour, but must be the gift of nature. By labour a man may become a tolerable imitator of Spenser, Shaekspeare, or Milton; and may heap together pretty compound epithets, as 'pale-eyed', 'meek-eyed', and the like; but unless he be born a Poet, he will never attain the genuine spirit of Poetry." It's interesting to hear these hymns sung by Maddy Prior in a folk, rather than ecclesiastic, style. You hear the words afresh. There are some cracking good verses, like: When God is mine and I am his, Of paradise possest, I taste unutterable bliss, And everlasting rest. and another Jesu, Lover of my soul, Let me to thy bosom fly, While the nearer waters roll, While the tempest still is high: Hide me, O my Savior, hide, Till the storm of life be past! I like it. However, there's another song that I've been trying to find with that same title. It was sung by a Black gospel choir {The Edwin Hawkns Singers?} and was faster in tempo than that Darlene Zschech song. Sounds like someone has written a praise song based on the Charles Wesley idea. It isn't the one I was thinking of, though. 'Mine' is the one at the cyberhymnal site ... and pretty much the only tune you'll hear sung by the Welsh. It was written by Joseph Parry who was a major force on the Welsh music scene in the mid/late 1800s (spent a lot of time in N.E. United States too.) The other tune, which would have been popular with my mother's family (Canadian Methodists) is on the same cyberhymnal page. Look for the tune name, Martyn, by Simeon B Marsh. Is that the one you're thinking of? It's also sung in a medley on youtube by the South African Mass Male Choir Little Hawk - lovely piece! sian |

And the choir version of "Jesus, Lover of my Soul" sounds slow to my ears, too. And they draw out the end notes which wasn't part of our 'tradition'. I have the music in a book, which I could scan for you if you wanted it - one I think Hollowfox sent me once. One of those 'old time religion' collections of great singable religious songs. I never get tired of hearing and singing them. Then there are the slow-moving lyrical pieces better suited for solo performance (and for listening) than for group participation: "Precious Lord Take My Hand" and "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" are great ones. I have a special place in my heart for Sam Cooke's "Touch the Hem of His Garment" because I had the rare experience, as a young child, of hearing Sam himself, with the Soul Stirrers, leading the congregation of a neighboring church through an incredibly stirring rendition. I won't quote the lyrics here, because for me the song was never about a verbal message but was rather an incredibly inspired exercise in group vocalization, completely transcending any merely literal message. |

When I first heard it many years ago, I thought "Spirit in the Sky" was downright stupid. Now I feel more favorably towards it on the rare occasion when it pops up. "Get Together" ["Love is but the song we sing, fear's the way we die..."], by Dino Valenti and most famously recorded by Jesse Colin Young and the Youngbloods, is such a great expression of flower-power-era faith and idealism. You never hear it anymore, probably because people can't sing it without a sense of irony, which is a shame. (I'm working on it, but can't quite pull it off yet...) Another ostensibly secular psychelic-folk anthem that expresses a beautiful spirituality is "Ripple," lyrics by Robert Hunter and music by Jerry Garcia: If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung, Would you hear my voice come thru the music, Would you hold it near as it were your own? Its a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken, Perhaps they're better left unsung. I don't know, don't really care Let there be songs to fill the air. You can't go wrong with that sort of thing. If there is, in fact, nothing out there...no God...no afterlife...such songs still summon up powerful and meaningful feelings in people and serve a good purpose. If, on the other hand, there is something out there, and there is an afterlife, then such songs give respect and assistance to it. Only the hardened heart of the cynic or the overly proud intellect of someone who is on a personal vendetta against all such beliefs for his own ego's satisfaction can have the ill will to constantly aggressively attack all such practices simply as a matter of course...just because they are not practices of the attacker's own personal choice. For my own part, I am certain that there is some higher intelligence involved intimately within and behind everything we experience in this life. I don't care what people call it or what name they give to it. I don't care what religion they clothe it in or if they attach no religion at all to it. It doesn't matter. I believe it is here, always has been, and always shall be, and we are all part of it in some way. Science is a useful way of observing its effects in this world. Religious practices are a symbolic way of giving it respect and honoring it. Ultimately, it's the force of love. |

I recommend "The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ" among those. I don't think Jesus was just hammering boards in his first 30 years of life...uh-uh. I think he was traveling, studying hard, learning spiritual disciplines, and doing a great deal of spiritually oriented work. It wasn't covered in the Christian Church's official histories for whatever reason...probably because the few people writing those early official histories had not witnessed any of it themselves, firsthand. |

Thanks, Bobad, for the You tube link to Tantum Ergo. Though I frequent Youtube on a regular basis, it never occurred to me to seek out something like Tantum Ergo there. I've just spent the last hour searching and listening to many songs from my earliest church experiences. Holy God, We Praise Thy Name, Come Holy Ghost, Tantum Ergo, etc. (Bobad, did you catch the toddler singing Tantum Ergo?) Janie said, "As I contemplate the premise of the thread title, I find I make distinctions between songs that are favorites because of the associations they have with childhood or family significance, and songs that 'speak' to me spiritually. Anybody else notice that? Yes, Janie, AND I noticed that many that had strong significance to me as a child, still do, not only because of their association to my childhood, but because they held a sacredness then and still do - a sacredness which I find less evident in much of the contemporary music. Religious songs can speak to us for so many different reasons...the melody may be very moving/stirring, the lyrics might be particularly relevant for our personal situation, or the song may have good associations from when we've sung it in the past. The latter reason, I'm sure, why songs people had at their wedding or Christmas songs have been mentioned. For me I like the simplicity of "Dear Lord and Father of mankind", love the celtic tune of "Be Thou my vision" (especially the way we play it in our band at church with drums and celtic whistles) and also "What a friend we have in Jesus" because God used that song to help me find a fellow Christian when I was living in Japan and felt my faith was ebbing due to lack of fellowship. Finally, "O Love that will not let me go" - I can't sing the verse about tracing the rainbow without getting choked up!!! |

The song "Victory Is Mine" was the theme song for one of those radio shows, and for some reason, it's the only song that I associate with my memories of those Sunday morning shows. One reason why I remember this song may be that it was repeated every Sunday-since it was that radio show's theme song-and it was sung with much more "enthusiasm" {for want of a better word} than my church choirs usually sang. I've found two YouTube videos of that song. This afternoon I'm going to a funeral of a friend who went overnight from being fit, healthy and enjoying everything in life to being practically unable to speak and being confined to a wheelchair and unable to do anything for himself. This was due to a brain haemmorrage. He spent a year when his speech did get a little better during which time he told me often how much he wished it was all over. Last week he got his wish. Today I found this thread and it's helped me get my thoughts into some kind of perspective. I've no idea what songs/hymns we'll hear today but I'll have a lot to listen to inside. I guess the main one for me is "I Bid You Goodnight" which The Greatful Dead sang. When I have more time I'll find a Blue Clicky for it. Thanks Mudcat. Eddie |

I have a few offerings for you on this score (no pun intended) - sorry. I have toi agree with Slag and Little Hawk who nominated 'Amazing Grace': I think not only is the tune spectacularly powerful - but singing its words to the tune of House of the Rising Sun and placing the emphasis on "Grace's" lyrics where they would go on "Rising Sun's" - jus tshows how versatile and powerful this song really is. Add to that the fact that the writer, John Newton was the captain of a slave ship for many years before he found God and became a minister and you have a song which is powerful as well as the story of the lyricists life. My own epiphany moment with Amazing Grace came in the Scottish Highlands when we pulled over one drizzling, windy, freezing morning (just another beautiful Summer's day in the highlands of Western Scotland) into a lookout carpark above Loch Tulla. There was a chap in full 'Cameron Highlander' regalia busking by playing the pipes. As I walked over to film him he segue'd from whatever tune he was doing and into Amazing Grace: I stood there filming with tears running unashamedly down my face and sobbing (you can hear me on the film). That's how I know this: You have great taste! I just wanted to mention that my all-time favorite to sing (though not necessarily my favorite song) of those you mentioned is "Peace Be Still." In fact, I liked it so much that I conned the choir leader into letting me reinsert the original second and third verses of the song (as written by Mary A. Baker in 1874 as "Master the Tempest Is Raging," according to the Cyberhymnal) so that the solo part would be longer. You didn't post those verses in this thread, so I thought I would: Master, with anguish of spirit I bow in my grief today. The depths of my sad heart are troubled, O waken and save, I pray. "I Heard The Voice of Jesus Say" sounds different from a lot of gospel songs because there it features a trio instead of a soloist, and has a Latin rhythm to it, or at least that's what it sounds like to me. Here's information that song from the YouTube summary: "Edwin Hawkins Singers, Northern California State Youth Choir - Director Edwin R. Hawkins - "Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord LP Century 31016, 1968; BPS 10001, 1969 ** I don't recall hearing the gospel song "A Building Not Made By Hand" before. But its tune is "old school" gospel [I mean like the 1950s or 1960s]. And the song is sung in a "old downhome gospel" way that I wish I could describe better. The song uses both call & response [choir/soloist and soloist/choir patterns and also sometimes uses a kind of "lining" approach with the soloist singing a line and the choir taking it from there...In this case, the choir is the church congregation. Everyone appears to know the song. But even if a person didn't know the words to this song when other people started singing it, the repeating pattern of the lyrics make the song easy to learn. I'm really glad I stumbled across this song while surfing YouTube's gospel song collection. Albertina Walker singing "A Building Not Made By Hand", is now definitely one of my favorite religious songs. I wrote the word "complete" in quotation marks because I'm guessing though I don't know for sure that this could be an open ended zipper song with different verses like "Lord keep my heart strong, or Lord keep my mind strong, etc" in addition to "Lord keep my body strong"... Also, from reading the comments, it appears that this song was sung at a special program that featured a number of well known gospel singer. Perhaps when I first heard it, in my early teens, it appealed to me as an sf fan; it's not often you hear a hymn about alien life. Perhaps it's the way Carter could combine an open-minded, inquisitive outlook with rock-solid faith; as if to say, there's a great big universe out there, we know almost nothing about almost all of it, but we can be sure that God's out there too. Can't watch it through because it reminds of the days I sang hymns with my little girls at church, Andie creating amazing harmonies off the top of her 11 -14 year old head. Having said that, even if I didn't have the tragedy of Andie's untimely passing and hurt of memories to contend with, I still prefer the elderly lady singing. And you were spot on as to why. Her song is coming from a deep abiding faith. But there is something more. It is coming from her suffering and an understanding of the suffering of others and that is what makes it so special. I want to be a small child sitting cross legged chin in hands, at her feet listening to her sing and tell stories. |

It has been sung by literally hundreds of artists. Some of my favorite performances are by Johnny Cash, Doc & Merle Watson, Dolly Parton, Red Molly, The Crooked Jades, Tim O'Brien, Tim Buckley, Natalie Merchant, Jack White, Joan Baez & Mimi Farina, and Emmylou Harris. However, the two best performances I've ever heard are by Isaac Guillory & Darrell Scott. In that vein, I like Tom Russells "Guadalupe". Stephanie Davis "Wolves" speaks to the place where hard lives intersect with hope and the unknown. Add another for Iris DeMents "Let The Mystery Be". Gove Scrivenors "I'll Fly Away" is a rollicking good gospel number with a little Doc Watson help. "Fifty Niles Of Elbow Room" as sung by Red Clay Ramblers. "I Betcha Heaven's On A Dirt Road" by Larry Jon Wilson (RIP). Lot's of good musical memories here. I remember alot of these numbers from growing up in a relifious household. |
