lyr req: ah why so soon (German Song)

searching for a German song I performed some 15 years ago in a choir. It was translated into English and went something like this:

Ah why so soon, cease dancing and singing
Ah why so soon when laughter was ringing...

why must something somehting..

soon will the last sweet echo be dying
soon will the last sweet songster be flying
soon will the last green leaf down fall

homeward they hie them one and all
homeward they hie them one and all....

there was a lot more to it. Those lyrics are probably jumbled and incorrect but it's not the lyrics I loved it so much for. I rememeber it had the most haunting melody, very unique and beautiful.

Has anyone heard it or know where I can hear it (to see if I still like it) or get the sheet music or lyrics?

Found in a recital program:

HERBSTLIED
[from "Duett aus Athalia" by Felix Mendelssohn]

Ach, wie so bald verhallet de Reigen,
wandelt sich Frühling in Winterzeit!
Ach, wie so bald in trauerndes Schweigen,
wandelt sich alle die Fröhlichkeit!
Bald sind die letzten Klänge verflogen,
Bald sind die letzten Sänger gezogen!
Bald is das letzte Grün dahin!
Alle sie wollen heimwärts zieh'n!
Ach, wie so bald verhallet de Reigen,
wandelt sich Lust in sehnendes Leid.
Wär't ihr ein Traum, ihr Liebesgedanken?
Süss wie der Lenz, und schnell verweht?
Eines, nur eines will nimmer wanken:
Es ist das Sehnen, das nimmer vergeht.
Ach, wie so bald!

AUTUMN SONG

Ah, why so soon cease dancing and singing,
Why changes springtime to wintertide?
Ah, why so soon where laughter was ringing,
Do all so silent and still abide?
Soon will the last sweet echo be dying,
Soon will the last sweet songster be flying!
Soon will the last green leaf downfall!
Homeward they hie them, one and all!
Ah, why so soon cease dancing and singing,
Why changes joy to pining and pain?
Were ye a dream, from earth lightly winging?
Charming as Spring, ye love thoughts vain?
One thing there is that will never leave me:
It is my yearning, 'twill ever remain!
Ah, why so soon!

This is a good time of year for such a song.

Guest, you can hear a MIDI of Mendelssohn's Herbstlied at this site:

http://www.classicalarchives.com/

You have to sign up as a free member, but I have beens signed up for a couple years, and there has been no problem. I've downloaded the piece to my music program, and I'm going to see if my band would like to play it.

I've edited the MIDI from the Classical Music Archives. I believe that it sounds enough like a folk song to merit inclusion here, especially since we have the lyrics.

It's a duet, and the melody is played by the oboe sound. The flute plays the alto.

Much of this piece sounds like a sweet, mournful Jewish folk song to me. Mendelssohn had a Jewish heritage, and I think it is reflected here.

I lowered the key so the highest note changed from an F to an E. It is in Em (belly-dance). Don't be scared by the Eb's. They are calling for a B chord. (I don't have time to change all the Eb's to D#'s.)

I've sent the MIDI to Joe for posting here. I hope that is all right.
