BS: Want a Lighthouse?

Not to keep--but to take care of. Just heard on CBS Radio News: The Feds are looking for a few good people to tend to currently empty L.H's. in Long Island Sound. First it sounded intriguing - the romance of it all-the quiet-the beauty. Then we're informed thre is no electric or fresh water.

How in the heck have people managed without electric & water for all these yrs.? What generates the light? By the time you get to the top carrying a gallon of water it must feel like it weighs a ton.
Any takers?

I'd consider it, depending on what they pay. My apptitude tests in High Schhool suggested that as one of the top three occupations I was suited for. the others were forest ranger and monk.

Lighthouse attendant was a job I always saw listed in those stupid career placement tests I took as a kid.

If there's no electricity - what powers the light? Don't tell me there's a big ass candle up there that you have to keep lit?

A few words come to mind. Claustrophobia and Stairs being two of them.

Lighthouses were lit by oil for many years -- if not centuries -- before electricity.

I guess you truck or boat in your drinking water and wash in salt water.

I heard this on CBS-RADIO NEWS (NEW YORK) I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO POST A LINK TO A RADIO PROGRAM. WEBTV HAS MANY LIMITATIONS. I DO AS WELL! SORRY.

Wanted: A compatible couple to live on Seguin Island, Maine for the summer of 2004 to caretake a majestic historic lighthouse and surrounding 64 acres of grounds, 2½ miles off shore from the mouth of the Kennebec River.

After ten weeks of reviewing 185 applications for the job as Lighthouse Caretakers for Wind Point Lighthouse, the Village Board hired two Lighthouse Lovers who met at a Lighthouse, were later married at a Lighthouse, and now a dream come true, they will live in a Lighthouse.

On 09/13/2007, the Wind Point Village Board appointed Michael and Susan Arts of Racine, Wisconsin as the new caretakers of the Wind Point Lighthouse. Both Lighthouse Lovers met at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in North Carolina and later exchanged wedding vows at Sullivan's Island Lighthouse in South Carolina.

The competition seems pretty fierce, and specific offers seem to come and go regularly. One would need to decide to try it and then search persistently for a workable opportunity.

There are also still a few old ICBM Missile Silos scattered around the country for those who just need a quiet place. The government sales have ended, I believe, but resales appear occasionally.

The lack of fresh water is discouraging.
But I would not miss the electric water as I never had it before ... ;-)

Peace,

As a professional Hermit, can you make a living Hermitically sealing containers?

.....Or should we use another term besides sealing, so the Greenpeace ships will leave you alone?

Are female Hermits called "Himmits", and if not, then why?

If you lived with a Himmit, would you still qualify as a Hermit?

Would a Himmit be able to keep her mitts off you?

Would you need to register? Would a Hermit Permit firm it?

When you say "Hermit!", should we consider it as good as hermed, by Hermes?

Or could we count on you to stay out of herms way?

I'm trying to see if I can find enough in my piggy bank for at least a small lighthouse. I saw some wonderful lighthouses in Long Island Sound when I took the ferry P.T. Barnum from Long Island to Connecticut.
Click here for images of some of the wonderful lighthouses of Long Island Sound. So far, Montauk is my favorite. I saw it on a wonderfully stormy day - I was glad my vantage point was on solid ground.

Ya know Mario, those high school apptitude tests can be interesting can't they? Mine said either Mad Hatter, Sexual Pervert, or Snake Charmer. I hate snakes and could never get into the Wonderland bullshit, but the Pervert job is working out pretty well.

Peter Murphy made his fortune in the stock market and then set off to realie his lifetime ambitions, which were to have a house with a circular library that had a view of the ocean. After many years of spending his summer vacations searching with no success he found at the beginning of this years season that he could not get away to search, so he entrusted his brother Jose to go and look in his stead. they concocted a system of coded telegrams to pass info, so that some smartass wouldnt step in beat them to the draw and then offer the purchase at an inflated price. After several weeks of no word Peter received a telegram reading " Donezerly ME, No luck, no property here meeting spec, old disused Lighthouse for sale is all" he immideately sent a reply " ssb L1" which his brother correctly interpreted as......

" Jose, can't you see, Buy the Donzerly light"

Instead of putting a head torch on, I'd have to put loads of weight off to be anything light ;-)

Lewis Carroll got into "The Wonderland Bullshit" and he....Ahhhhhhhhh, never mind!

But you DO seem mercurial enough to have made a great Mad Hatter.

The light is powered by kerosene. (One night as I was trimmin'
o' the glim' singing a verse from the evenin' hymn) ( which
refers to trimming the wick so that it won't smoke, convex
on a small wick, concave on a large).

The rotation is supplied by weights, like a giant grandfather
clock, which run down the center of the tower.

This is practical, because the entire lens assembly is actually
floated on a trough of mercury, making the frictional losses
nearly nil.

So the keeper's duties amount to making sure the oil reservoir
is filled, that the weights are wound, and the wick is trimmed.
And that the lens is clean.

The light isn't the problem.

Maintaining the keeper is.

Fresh water was brought in, where required, by a supply
vessel. As was food. Kerosene was always brought in.
