31 Oct 07 - 12:14 PM (#2183552) Subject: Chris Whitley / Chris Whiteley From: GUEST,Jim A few years back I opened a copy of the Dulcimer Newsletter and was sorry to read that Garnet Rodgers had passed away in a drowning accident. I later discovered (and was equally sad to learn) that it was Gambel Rodgers and not Garnet who had drowned. I had a flashback this morning when I read the record reviews in the autumn issue of Sing Out! The reviewer for Dislocation Blues began with,"This superb CD is, sadly, Canadian blues artist Chris Whiteley's valedictory. He passed away at age 45 from lung cancer six moths after the record was completed..." He goes on to talk about Chris's work on recordings by Leon Redbone, John Hammond, Amos Garret, Cindy Church, Penny Lang, Raffi, Fruteland Jackson, Diana Braithewait and his work with brother Ken. It is obvious that the writer of this review has confused Chris Whiteley (still alive and kickin') with the late Chris Whitley. I got a scare until I saw the age 45. This would mean that Chris's daughter Jenny and son Dan would have been born while he was still in elementary school. |
