Food and Drink In Song Titles

Subject: Food and Drink In Song Titles
From: bubblyrat

Lots of Songs and Tunes contain words relating to food or drink items, ie "Whiskey in the Jar", but some are less obvious, Viz. "Flour of Scotland ", " The Curries of Kildare", "The Houmous of Tullah", or,indeed, "Cumin round the Mountain", or even "Green grow the Rashers -O " .........I"m sure you get the picture !!....So over to YOU !! ( but please---no "Soup John -B " !! ) ......

Some years back, before Mudcat existed, there was a round of this sort of thing on the folk scene---except that it was limited to spices. I think Debby McClatchy might have been the ringleader. Stuff like The Grey Fennel Line and O Cinnamon, Where You Gonna Run To? and even Summer is a-Cumin In.

"We Only Fight When We Drink Gin"--Austin Lounge Lizards
"You Can Eat Dogfood"--Tom Paxton

You can eat dog food, you really oughta try it
You can fricasee it, you can deep fry it
Flip it on over, eat it any way
Eat along with rover, three times a day.

"Savoy Truffle"--The Beatles
"Honey Pie"--The Beatles
"Have Some Madeira, M'Dear"--Flanders and Swann
"In Praise of Alcohol"--Finest Kind
"There's a Pizza on the Ground"--Austin Lounge Lizards
"Merchant's Lunch", by the Red Clay Ramblers (about a disastrous experience at a Tennessee truck stop)

While food isn't explicitly mentioned in the title it would be remiss not to mention "The Reluctant Cannibal" by Flanders and Swann. The song, which I'm sure all of us know, has such magnificent lines as:

"Roast leg of insurance salesman! A chorus of "yum"s ran around the table..."

"It must have been someone 'e et!!"

"I won't let another man pass my lips!"

"You're not one of these cranks who thinks that eating people is cruel are you? You look at a man sitting there in the pot and think he's suffering? It's not like that at all. That man sitting there in the pot, he enjoys it! He's just had an invigorating chase through the forest. He's sitting there in the nice warm water with all the carrots and dumplings, thinking "Oh, the pleasure and happiness I'm going to bring to a whole heap of people!" "
