ADD: He Went In like a Lion and Came Out ..Mocha.

I realize that this was requested already a while ago with few results but I was wondering if anyone has found out more information since. My mother used to sing this song back in the forties and fifties. She used to sing snatches of unusual songs.Anyway, part of it went like thisHe went in like a lion, a wild raging lion, "lots of forgotten words" when a great big cup of mocha, hit him on the cocoa, followed by some huckleberry jam. He went in like a lion, a wild raging lion but whenshe got through he came out like a lamb.

Perhaps an old music hall song?

From the year 1920 by Billy Murray. It's on "Billy Murray, Anthology: The Denver Nightingale."

The title is "He Went in Like a Lion and Came Out Like a Lamb."

The song was written by Andrew B.Stirling with music by Harry von Tilzer. There seem to be a lot of recordings by Bill Murray (1920) available (others too) (on one site you can get the song for $0.99). I'll see if the sheet music is about anywhere online and get back to you.

I had to check a few collections, but finally found the sheet music at UCLA's digital library. This link will take you to the item index page:

He Went In Like A Lion.... If you click the link marked View Sheet Music at the top of the page it will open a pdf of the sheet music. (Or use this link directly: He Went In Like A Lion... (view pdf)

I remember a different song from the 50/60's which went something like .....

My defences are down and you've got me where you want me
And I don't know where I am
I went in like a lion
And I came out like a lamb

Here's a free download of the Billy Murray version. Scroll down the page a little to find the title listing.

http://www.archive.org/details/BillyMurray_part2

This was recorded by the hillbilly group Carolina Buddies around 1931, and in the 70s, fiddler Norman Woodlieff was quoted as claiming the writer credit on the song. No doubt he wrote it down from listening to the Billy Murray record!

The following is transcribed from the sheet music at UCLA Meredith Wilson Library, Stanley Ring Collection:

HE WENT IN LIKE A LION AND CAME OUT LIKE A LAMB
Words by Andrew B Sterling; Music by Harry Von Tilzer
New York: Harry Von Tilzer Music Pub. Co., 1920.

1. “It's after twelve,” said Jones, “and I must run home like a deer.
My wife gets wild when one o'clock draws near.”
Said Brown, “You have no spunk at all. You ought to be ashamed.
Why don't you be like me? I have mine tamed.
Come on around the block with me, you timid little mouse,
And I will try to show you how a man goes in his house.”

CHORUS: He went in like a lion, a wild raging lion,
And when he got inside, he slammed the door.
He said, “Well, here I am
And I don't give a continental.”
Then he gave an awful roar;
But a great big cup of Mocha hit him on the coco,
Followed by some Huckleberry jam;
And as his wifey pulled out all the whiskers on his chin,
She whispered, “I'm a better man than you are, Gunga Din.”
He went in like a lion, a wild raging lion.
When she got through, he came out like a lamb.

2. When Brown came out, old Jonesy said, “She sure did beat you up.
Look out, old man! Here comes another cup.”
Said Brown, “When I went in, she threw her arms around my neck.”
“And then,” said Jones, “she threw you out a wreck.
But are you going to stand for that?” and Brownie answered, “No.
Just watch me going in again, and then stick for the show.”

CHORUS: He went in like a lion, a wild raging lion,
And when he got inside, he slammed the door.
And then he hollered, “Well,
Now here's where I raise--
Don't you throw that! I won't play with you no more.
I was only joking, dearie. I want Jones to hear me.
Here's ten dollars. Now who's boss?” “I am.”
And as she took the ten, she uppercut him on the chin,
And hollered, “You bring twenty-five the next time you come in.”
He went in like a lion, a wild raging lion.
When she got through, he came out like a lamb.

Not sure about line breaks. If anyone wants to correct that please go ahead.

The second verse is quite different from the one I learned off the Carolina Buddies 78 many years ago and which is the same in Billy Murray's version. It's funnier IMO.

When Brown came out old Jonsey said she sure did beat you up
Look out old man here comes another cup -- heads up!
Said Brown when I went in she threw her arms around my neck
And then said Jones she threw you out a wreck
But are you going to stand for that and Brownie answered "no"
Just watch me going in again and then stick for the show

He went in like a lion, a wild raging lion,
He heard a record playing "Home Sweet Home."
He said, "I love that tune," she said, "You can have it, kid,"
And she bounced the record off his dome.
She chased him round like bubbles, she packed up all his troubles,
The long long trail gave him an awful slam.
She had him chasing rainbows, all his troubles flew like rain,
She said, "Goodbye forever, wait until we meet again."
He went in like a lion, a wild raging lion,
When she got through, he came out like a lamb.

A tune with a few words popped into my head during a bout of insomnia last night. The only lyrics I can remember are :

A great big cup of mocha hit him on the coca
             Followed by some huckleberry jam...
It's a very old song. I would love to know the origins of and the complete words to this song. Having the melody would be wonderful as well. It's a tall order, I know. It could be an old vaudeville tune but more likely an English music hall number.

Actually, Tom, thanks for asking this question again. I missed the song the first time--and I'm probably not the only one. And the contribution by 12-stringer on the first thread is wonderful, especially the second verse.

I get references to:

(1918):   I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles
(1915):   Pack Up Your Troubles In Your Old Kit Bag
(1915):   Long Long Trail A-Winding
(1918):   Til We Meet Again

All just great songs

Any other songs cited after "Home Sweet Home". Maybe something with "all his troubles flew like rain"?

And the song which is the subject of the thread sounds like a winner too.

I thought "Rainbows" might be in there.

And thanks so much, 12-stringer, for that link to the Billy Murray website. As has been noted, there are so many treasures in that. Wow!   For instance, always wanted to hear "He Had To Get Under", ever since I heard a piece of it years ago.

There is also

Man on top of woman
Isn't long to stay.
His head is full of nonsense,
His ass is full of play,
He goes in like a lion,
He comes out like a lamb,
And when he buttons up his pants,
He doesn't give a damn.

Goes well TTTO "Sing a Song of Cities", IMO.

I remember once along while ago hearing these lyrics in a song:

A great big mug of coca
          Hit him on the moca

Does anyone remember the title of the song or other lyrics? It may have been a British parlor ballad.

No way am I going to beat my previous record, topical tom - see above.

What is a moca? And should it be a "mug of cocoa"?

And, the same questions as before: see my post at 13 Mar 17 - 02:39 PM

Too late. I went out for lunch so the two hours have been and gone.

The usual questions:

Do you remember any of the lyrics? Please post what you remember to help with internet searches.

When did you hear it or see it in written music collections? If it was in written music collections, what sort of collections are you likely to have seen it in?
Was it recorded? Did you hear it on the radio, see it on TV, hear it on vinyl, CD, digital, YouTube, etc?
Did you hear it live?
Singer(s) male, female, a group, solo?
Musicians? Instruments.
Lively, haunting, slow, fast, dance tune, etc, etc?

Is it possible the name of the song or the lyrics are incorrect? Fingal, Donegal, Finnegan, etc etc.

Any more information would be helpful.
