Hi

I've recently, in the past few weeks, moved to Liverpool and just wondered if anyone knew of any places where they play folk music like in pubs or something.

Thanks,
Greg

What are you looking for? Irish session? Singing shanties? English tunes? Any or all of the above?

Hi Greg

Anything really. The majority of folk music I listen to is American but that's mainly because what I first got into and I don't have the funds to buy more. So thought now moving to a bigger city and the Irish migrations there would be lots about. I tend to favour the more traditional music rather than contemporary.

Thanks,
Greg

How about Irish set dance?
The dance classes are usually to cds, with a band on special occassions, but if you contact someone on that site they will know who the some of the local musicians are and may be able to put you in touch. The ones who play in bands may not play in pubs, but I bet they know someone who knows.

Best of luck.

Lot of Gregs round here!
For a bit of what's on and general chat, definitely have a listen to Stan Ambrose's folk programme.Folkscene can be heard Thursday evening on BBC Radio Merseyside 95.8FM from 9pm. The programme is repeated on Tuesdays at 9pm.
That will help get your eye(or ear) in.

Or you could turn up at a folk club and ask around, though Lancashire Folk doesn't seem to show one in Liverpool itself.
Or look on Folk Orbit , but check the info as more people tell Colin and Helen that they are starting things than that they have changed.

There's lots in Folk Orbit. I was cutting and pasting, but I pressed the wrong button and lost it all, so you can look yourself.
More than 1 for every night of the week, so now it's just find out which are still on, try them out to see if they are what you are looking for (e.g. it's no use me going to a fast Irish session if I can only play Winster Galop, slowly), and talk to people when you go, they'll tell you what else there is

If you're into American, The Britannia Bluegrass Band have a just started a new weekly venue. It's 8:30 every Thursday night at the Prince Arthur, Rice Lane, Walton. If you are travelling on the A59 towards Maghull, The Prince Arthur is on the left between Rice Lane Flyover and Walton Hospital.

thanks Mo the Caller, Folk Orbit looks to be a good resource. I've looked under venues on some of the days and have made a list to go and see.

thanks Fred. I'm trying to find places in the centre of Liverpool at the moment, as that's where I live. I'll have to see what I can find before traveling out. But I will take a note of that.

Hi Grogoreo, it's a long time since I spent time in Liverpool's folk clubs and sessions but I know without going too far outside the centre, there is a plethora of music nights of all description just waiting for you to turn up.(that's if you can find your way through the biggest building site in the north). Just a couple to get you started:

Everyman Folk Club, Hope street (in between the two Cathedrals)on a Tuesday night.

Pogue Mahone Irish Session, Seel Street.(Leave the car at home) ;)on Wednesdays.

Enjoy!!

Thanks terrier, I didn't know the Everyman had things like that. I only live ten minutes walk away. And Seel St. isn't far.

Greg

St Michael's Irish Centre, Boundary Lane/West Derbt Road has a session last Friday of the month. Mainly tunes but songs not unwelcome.

HI,

If you like traditional American music, please make sure you get to The Everyman on 13th November (next Tuesday). Bob Conroy & Norm Pederson are the guests. They come from Staten Island, New York, and play both traditional American music , and contemporary songs & tunes from Staten Island. You'll be sure of a smashing night.

Sorry Mo I don't know about ceilidhs etc but you could give them a call and ask.

According to their website
http://www.stmichaelsirishcentre.org/

they say
"You can join an Irish Language class, learn to play Irish music , learn Irish Dancing, have fun in the Ceili classes or simply soak in the genuine warm, welcoming atmosphere with a pint of Guinness! The centre is licensed so come and join the craic!"

Enjoy

Me, I have two left feet so I just play the music and let others take the strain

Jim

For my money, the best traditional music to be found in Liverpool at the moment is at the Edinburgh, Sandown Lane, Wavertree on a Monday night from 9.00 pm. Mainly Irish, emphasis on tunes, not too many guitars and usually some good unaccompanied singers. Plus it's a gorgeous little local pub as well.

The grand city of Chester is not to far and there is lots on there most nights. Of course there is always other places a bit closer in Birkenhead/New Brighton/Port Sunlight as well .All mentioned in folk orbit.

Everyman is good on a Tuesday night about 8.30. Run by Shirley Peden and Hughie (of Spinners fame) & Christine Jones. Good food in the Bistro too, and great beer.

If you want to try a little further afield there's the Bothy Folk Club in Southport on a Sunday night (8 p.m.). Lancashire singer Pat Ryan next Sunday; singers' nights altenate weeks.   Also other stuff in local pubs, notably Lancashire Night tomorrow (Tues 27th, Lancashire Day) in the Guest House.

Hello
I'll be in Liverpool for a few days in the middle of this month (April). Not much time, but I am interested in hearing shanties, if I get the chance. I'd appreciate if any locals could drop a word in as to where there might be either regular sessions nowadays or upcoming performances (April 15-20). Do the gents from Stormalong John get out these days?
Thank you,

Gibb

P.S. I'll also be interested in the same sort of thing in London, where I'll be April 20-23, though obviously that is for another thread...somewhere

And one of us will be in Liverpool 5th 6th 7th April (from tomorrow in fact). Might get time to go out in the evenings, so does anyone know of any sessions for a fiddler in Liverpool Sunday Monday Tuesday?

Maghull Folk Club is a very active group of Folksters who sing all sorts of different songs around Folk. Obviously a strong link to the city itself so lots of river, sea and Irish songs sung (with local Liverpool songs thrown in for good measure).

Highly recommended for a relaxing night among friendly, enthusiastic people.

Enjoy!

Just bumping this--

I am particularly interested in shanty-related stuff. I'll be in Liverpool thursday thru sunday, this week!

Any more recommendations? Pubs, clubs, street corners...music stores even...where I might run across some of the "shanty culture" (!) of Liverpool ;)
