Lyr Req: Rambling Robin

Hello all, I would be grateful if someone could get me the lyrics of Rambling Robin. It is from the Christy Moore album Prosperous. It starts, "When once from boyhood I came to a man" or something like that. Thanks in advance. Noel P.

Noel, there was a thread about this over a year ago - if you go to the Forum Search and put Rambling in the Subject field and Barry in the Username, then you'll find it. I can only presume that this is the song you're looking for. Good luck, slan go foill.

Hello Ciaran, thanks for thr quick reply. However the version you pointed me to does not match the Christy Moore version. Does anyone else have the version I require. I would also appreciate if anyone had any other information on the song, writer/composer or whatever. Thanks again, Noel P.

Noel,
I looked up the Christy Moore version in the Christy Moore songbook. It is such a close match to the version Barry posted that I think it is easy to find out all words on Prosperous with Barry's version on the lap. If you think it is necessary I would type the other version, but couldn't do so before about two weeks.
In another source, the song is said to come from a broadside, so perhaps it has no known composer.

For the record, the exact words of Christy Moore singing Ramblin Robin. I reckon Christy makes a small mistake in the second last line of the second verse. He sings 'So intented was Ramblin Robin oh' when he intended to sing 'So contented was Ramblin Robin oh'.

When first from boyhood I came to a man
To ramble the nation through I soon began
Oh the ramblin' thought that came into me mind
So they christened me Ramblin' Robin oh,
So they christened me Ramblin' Robin.

O'er hills and o'er mountains I used for to go
I slept in the woods where there's frost and there's snow
No anxiety ever came into me mind
So contented was Ramblin' Robin oh
So contented was Ramblin' Robin

The wind and the rain oh they blew me quite cold
Me parents at home they were both growing old
Oh me father did weep and me mother did cry
For the loss of their Ramblin' Robin oh
For the loss of their Ramblin' Robin

When sixteen long years they were over and past
Me poor mother's sorrow was ended at last
And me father the nation did range through and through
Oh in search of his Ramblin' Robin oh
Oh in search of his Ramblin' Robin

When all me past follies they came to an end
To me own native village I did attend
Oh the neighbours they told me parents were dead
Filled with grief for their Ramblin' Robin oh
Filled with grief for their Ramblin' Robin

Oh where shall I wander and where shall I go?
Me heart it is filled with sorrow and woe
Oh the nation I'll wander through and through
And an end put to Ramblin' Robin oh
And an end put to Ramblin' Robin.

Here he is.
The tune sounds a bit like the Greenwood sidey-O.

Hi Robyn (not a rambler), well, I am a bit of a rambler, I walk and I talk and sing some songs, including this one. Haven't sung it in a while but maybe that's just my queue, I sang 'Raglan Road', when no one else would sing while I was in Spain this summer, ramblin' on the Camino with my wife. And a great reaction I got, I was well pleased. Last week I sang in Prague, an Irish night. Best reaction was to 'Paddy's lamentation' in the style of Sineád O'Connor, they all seemed to know the line 'to the devil I do say, God curse......'. Tomorrow, in Prague, another Irish night, béimís ag caint gaeilge agus beidh filiócht againn freisin. Beidh an file Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh anseo leis an dán 'Deireadh an Feide'. Breath suas ar an sráidbhaile 'Aas' sa bFhrainc. Songs to sing, maybe, 'Back home in Derry, jug of punch, wild mountain thyme, roll back the clouds and maybe Nelson's farwell', who knows, take me to Clare Island, the green and red of... Looking forward, Noel P
