Where is Alastair McDonald?

Back in the late 1980s/early 1990s on one of my trips to Scotland I purchased a casette "White Wings" by Alastair McDonald. Never heard any more about him. Anybody know of other recordings, or if he is still singing?

Hello there,

Yes, I know Alastair McDonald reasonably well as he goes to the church I used to go to when I was still back home in Glasgow.

He is still very much alive and well, singing and playing a bit, but doing a lot of radio work on Saga Radio for example.

Funny you should mention "White Wings" as I have the same cassette and listened to it endlessly when I lived in Japan and was homesick for Scotland!

The best to you,
Mrs B xxx

I'm quite sure I've seen him listed on gig guides for Scotland within the past month

Alistair is alive and well and working hard in Scotland.
We had him as the headline guest at our Folk Festival in March past and he was excellent.

Resurrecting a rather old thread.....

Alistair will be guesting on Celtic Music Radio this coming Tuesday afternoon (11 July).

As part of his "Ballads and Balladeers" series, Gavin Paterson introduces a series of occasional shows looking back over the entire career of one of our folk song heroes or heroines,
For our first show, the Special Guest is Alastair McDonald.

From recording in Abbey Road *before* The Beatles to ongoing theatrical and musical work, he has had a unique life in folk song.

Gavin Paterson will be chatting to Alastair, talking about his early 'Skiffle' and trad influence, working with Maurice Blythman and Jim McLean, and about the big numbers that are forever associated with him. Sam the Skull will no doubt make an appearance.

Please join us on Tuesday 11th July – 2pm to 4pm UK time.

You can listen on 95FM around Glasgow, or online at www.celticmusicradio.net
(click the "speaker" icon at the top of the page), or via apps such as TuneIn.

And after broadcast, you'll be able to listen again for 30 days on Gavin's catch-up page

Delighted to see this! I have two of his LPs; one is Burns songs which I've featured on my radio show's Burns Nights for years. Excellent album!

Still very much a part of the Scottish folk scene: absolutely indefatigable: you have to admire his energy and enthusuasm. Excellent presentations of the songs of Maurice Blythman ( "From Thurso to Berwick" in a reference to Maurice's nom de plume.)
