01 May 99 - 03:39 AM (#74826) Subject: RE: Lyrics wanted : Thousands are sailing From: Benjamin Bodhránaí Not the one that goes "Thousands are sailing, across the western ocean, to a land of oppurtunity that some of them will never see" I would presume? If yes reply and I'll bounce it. If not I'm sure someone else was discussing this on the forum recentlyish, but I'm timing out on the forum search. Good Luck BB |

01 May 99 - 06:27 AM (#74848) Subject: Lyr Add: THOUSANDS ARE SAILING (from the Pogues) From: Brakn Okay, this is the Pogues version. The island it is silent now But the ghosts still haunt the waves And the torch lights up a famished man Who fortune could not save Did you work upon the railroad Did you rid the streets of crime Were your dollars from the white house Were they from the five and dime Did the old songs taunt or cheer you And did they still make you cry Did you count the months and years Or did your teardrops quickly dry Ah, no, says he, 'twas not to be On a coffin ship I came here And I never even got so far That they could change my name Thousands are sailing Across the western ocean To a land of opportunity That some of them will never see Fortune prevailing Across the western ocean Their bellies full Their spirits free They'll break the chains of poverty And they'll dance In Manhattan's desert twilight In the death of afternoon We stepped hand in hand on Broadway Like the first man on the moon And "The Blackbird" broke the silence As you whistled it so sweet And in Brendan Behan's footsteps I danced up and down the street Then we said goodnight to Broadway Giving it our best regards Tipped our hats to Mister Cohen (I think that should be Cohan!!) Dear old Times Square's favorite bard Then we raised a glass to JFK And a dozen more besides When I got back to my empty room I suppose I must have cried Thousands are sailing Again across the ocean Where the hand of opportunity Draws tickets in a lottery Postcards we're mailing Of sky-blue skies and oceans From rooms the daylight never sees Where lights don't glow on Christmas trees But we dance to the music And we dance Thousands are sailing Across the western ocean Where the hand of opportunity Draws tickets in a lottery Where e'er we go, we celebrate The land that makes us refugees From fear of Priests with empty plates From guilt and weeping effigies And we dance Regards Mick Bracken |
01 May 99 - 01:18 PM (#74911) Subject: RE: Lyrics wanted : Thousands are sailing From: Benjamin Bodhránaí Mick, I have a vague feeling that Deanta sing a song of the same title, but I'm presuming different words as not many "trad" musos do Pogues songs. BB |
01 May 99 - 05:17 PM (#74964) Subject: Lyr Add: THOUSANDS ARE SAILING TO AMERICA^^ From: John Moulden This is a more substantial version than that sung by Mary Dillon, who uses Andy Irvine's tune rather than the traditional one. These are published in my "Thousands are sailing: a brief song history of Irish emigration" (Ulstersongs, Portrush) - see http://members.aol.com/jmoul81075/ulstsong.htm and click on "books" Liam's Brother has these for sale in US. John Moulden THOUSANDS ARE SAILING TO AMERICA You brave Irish people wherever you be I pray stand a moment and listen to me Our sons and fair daughters are now going away When thousands are sailing to America CHORUS Ah good luck to them now and safe may they land They are pushing their way to a far distant strand For here in old Ireland no longer can stay For thousands are sailing to America On the night before leaving bid the neighbours goodbye And early next morning their hearts give a sigh The tears from their eyes they are falling like rain When the horses are starting going off for the train CHORUS Their friends do assemble and the neighbours also When their trunks are packed up and fast ready to go They do kiss their mother and with these words do say Good-bye darling mother I'm now going away CHORUS When they do reach the station you'll hear their last cry Their handkerchiefs waving and bidding good-bye Their father he tells them be sure for to write And he watches the train till she goes out of sight CHORUS They put their foot on the tender just leaving the strand And give one look back to their dear native land Their hearts are a-breaking for leaving the shore Good-bye dear old Ireland will I ne'er see you more CHORUS It is God help the mother that rears up a child It is now for the father he labours and toils He tries to support them, he works night and day And when they are reared sure they will go away Chorus (end) JM ^^ |
21 Apr 05 - 07:14 PM (#1467402) Subject: Lyr Add: THOUSANDS ARE SAILING (from Tullamore) From: Jim Dixon The song that The Pogues sing was written by Philip Chevron, a member of the band. The song that Deanta sings is called "traditional" on their album, "Deanta," Here's another version, from a band called Tullamore, from their album "Timber & Stream." I don't know whether it's what Deanta sang. THOUSANDS ARE SAILING You brave Irish heroes, where'er you may be, Pray stand for a moment and listen to me. Your sons and fair daughters are now going away, And thousands are sailing to Amerikay. CHORUS: So good luck to those people and safe may they land. They're leaving their country for a far distant strand. They're leaving old Ireland no longer to stay, And thousand are sailing to Amerikay. On the night before leaving, they are bidding goodbye, And early next morning their hearts give a sigh. They do kiss their mothers and then they will say, "Farewell, dear old Father. We must now go away." Their friends and relations and neighbors also, When the trunks they are packed up and ready to go, The tears from their eyes they fall down like the rain, And the horses are prancing, heading off for the train. CHORUS When they do reach the station you will hear their last cries, With handkerchiefs waving and bidding goodbye. Their hearts will be breaking on leaving the shore. "Farewell, dear old Ireland. We will ne'er see you more." I pity the mother, whoe'er reared up the child, And likewise the father who labored and toiled. To try to support them, they will work night and day, And when they are reared up, they do go away. CHORUS |

09 Apr 11 - 06:51 PM (#3132168) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Thousands Are Sailing (from Deanta) From: Jim Dixon Just out of curiosity--How does anyone urgently need the lyrics, chords, etc., of a folk song? I see so many of these requests where people claim their need is urgent, yet they never explain why. |

18 Mar 17 - 01:48 AM (#3845467) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Thousands Are Sailing (from Deanta) From: GUEST,Tuco I've always understood the horses to be "going off for the dray." As in drayage (baggage, trunks, etc. to be loaded onto the ship). Seriously doubt that these people were boarding a train from Ireland to Amerikay. :-) |

It's like Deanta's first album has just been deleted from the internet... The second and third albums are available all over, but the first one is just... Missing. There aren't any recordings of this song to be found by any other band either, as far as I can tell. What gives?!? Oh - and for the fella that said "train" should be "dreys".. I respectfully disagree. Emigres would take trains to the port cities to board a ship. Luggage would be loaded on the ship by dock workers, not horses. |

21 Jul 22 - 08:19 PM (#4148002) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Thousands Are Sailing (from Deanta) From: Amergin Phil Chevron who wrote The Pogues song was the frontman to one of the earliest Irish punk bands, Radiators From Space. With them, he wrote many good tunes including Under Clery's Clock (a beautiful gay love song), and Song of the Faithful Departed. The man was an amazing poet. |
