Tech: Vista/Cool Edit

From: GUEST,Geoff/UK.

Please can somebody help me in my frustration.I have for several years used Cool Edit on my XP computer.Having now replaced the ailing machine with a new one which uses Vista I am in trouble (great trouble) I have plugged my recording machine into 'line input'
I now have no signal to record on to Cool Edit.I have even tried with
a microphone (into Mic.) with the same zero result.
Am I missing a switch (cannot find the XP type mixer either)
Help would be really appreciated.
Geoff.

Geoff, if you right click on your loudspeaker symbol in the "in tray", bottom right on desktop, it will give an option to click on "Recording devices" and select/enable the input you need.
Be careful to plug in to the inputs ONLY when the computer is switched off. I learned that to my cost of watching the input disappear before my very eyes!

Dear Effsee,

My apologies.The finger slipped !

Thank you very much for your advice.Yes,I have tried it without
much sucess.I did as you advised and yes the line volume control is set at 94% which should be sufficient and yet the line input feeding Cool-Edit is still zero.Interesting ?

Geoff

Is Cool-Edit compatible with Vista?

I'll have a look at Cool Edit when I find it but would hazard a guess that you would go into that program, click "File", scroll down and look for "Preferences" or "Settings" In there you would set your priorities for whichever device, bit rate etc. that you wish to choose. No?

Dear Jim,
Probably I am showing stupidity but in Vista is there a 'file'
button (and I feed the computer from a sound mixer)Driver ?

Geoff, Vista has a lot on compatability issues with some programmes/printers etc. You can sometimes go to a munufacturers site for an upgrade to make it work with Vista. There was an earlier thread on this, but I can't find it nowf

Just about everything that I hook up with Vista, needs a driver update. Not only that but once I have the drivers installed, I still check for drivers updates frequently. Companies such as M Audio had their devices on the market long before Vista came and are constantly ironing out the kinks. Others... not so much.
I'm going to look at Cool Edit now, then I'm having a wee dram since some wee soul has given me THE COLD!

Not sure if I got the right one. I tried to download Cool Edit and somewhere in the process it gave me "Audio Editor Pro. If this is the right one then go to "Player" (not "File") at the top of the screen when the program is running then click on "Playback/Recording Device" and make your selection. Be sure that whatever device you are using is actually switched on or it won't recognize it.
Once you have set whichever mic. or line as the default you can go in to "Advanced" to tinker with your settings.

Okay! So that was the wrong one. I have it now and I must say, it looks like an excellent program.
For Cool Edit Pro 2 you go to "Options" on the top bar click it and scroll down to "Device Properties", 3rd from the bottom. You can make your selections there. I very much doubt that Vista is your problem though so if it doesn't work for you maybe start looking at whatever player you're using.
Cheers!
Jim

I love my C.E. - I'd better hang on to XP for as long as I can.

However (and someone correct me if I'm wrong please) C.E. was bought up by Adobe and rebranded as Audition. It may be that C.E. wouldn't be considered for being vista-proof whereas Audition probably is.

Nick

Geoff: It's something very simple. You'll find it.
Try to keep your computer sound settings & the program sound settings, separate in your own mind. Also, sometimes when you change your device settings in programs such as these, you have to switch the program (not the computer) off and back on again for your new defaults to kick in.
Nick P.: I don't think it's a Vista issue but I can certainly sympathise with your concerns.
Efsee: You were the highlight of my trip. Old Hallburn rocks!

Last resort: pm John in Kansas, He knows EVERYTHING!
