Another fun packed afternoon in Essex. As it was Margaret's birthday, the room was absolutely packed, and there must have been about 15 singers. Snow had fallen that morning, making it even more remarkable. More snow fell during tjhe afternoon, but it was very warm inside.Claudine was back for a flying visit, and the day's Fab Club virgins were Simon Vogel and Roasa's Daughters. No club this coming Sunday, but back on 20th April for Club In The Pub with The Famous Potatoes.

The Famous Potatoes were fantastic!

This Sunday,27th April we have a Floor Spot Session in the back room.
No club on 4th May because of Bank Holiday, but we have an extra one on the 11th. We have a birthday party, which means a bigger audience. If you want to come and sing, get there early (by 2.30) and bring a plate of food.

On May 18th we have a Club In The Pub Session with floor spots plus the very talented LIZ SIMCOCK

Today's session was relatively quiet, but very enjoyable. We had two virgin performers today... Lizzie and Micca. Yes, that famous catter paid us a visit today and caused great amusement with "The Hash My Father Scored." He loved the club and it's quite local for him.

Next session is Mike Parrot's birthday. everyone welcome provided they bring some eats. Be early if youu wanta floor spot. May 11th @ 2.30.
I'm writing the review.

Greetings:

This is a preminder, if such a word exists. Anne Price and I will be at the FAB Club in Grays, Essex, on Sunday afternoon, October 19th. I believe the time is 2:30.

We will also be at Orpington Friday Folk on the evening of October 17th, at the Black Swan Folk Club in York on the evening of October 23rd, and at a going away potluck at the home of Liz the Squeak in Plaistow, London, on the evening of October 25th. As time and strength allow, we will likely show up at various and sundry other venues, perhaps doing floor spots, but certainly saying "hello" to all whom we meet in our capacity as goodwill ambassadors from the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club. With a little good luck, my newest CD, Low Rent District, will be ready before we leave for the UK.

I can taste the chicken balti already.

Well we had another thin, but far from quiet afternoon. No club on 12th, but a guest session on 19th with Steve Suffett("Suffett") and Anne Price from New York. There'll be space for floor singers too.

05 Oct 08 - 11:38 PM (#2458092)
Subject: RE: Fab Club, Grays, Essex
From: Suffet

Actually it's Suffet, with only a single t at the end. The name is probably a Farsi variant of Shofet, the Hebrew word for judge or magistrate, meaning a non-hereditary civil ruler, as in the Book of Judges. The word Suffet also appears in ancient Phoenician, where it has the same meaning. Hannibal's father, Amilcar Barca, had been the Suffet of Carthage, and Hannibal later held that office himself.

Anne and I will be traveling with our spouses as official goodwill ambassadors from the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club, and our schedule includes the following:

• Friday, October 17, 2008. Orpington Friday Folk at the Liberal Club. 7 Station Road. Orpington, Kent. 8:30 PM.

• Saturday, October 18, 2008, 3:00-5:00 PM. Anarchist Bookfair at Queen Mary & Westfield College. Mile End Road. London. Anne and I will be among several performers, and each of us will be doing two 10-minute sets some time during those two hours.

• Sunday, October 19, 2008. FAB (Folk - Acoustic - Blues) Club at the White Hart Pub. Argent Street. Grays, Essex. 2:30 PM. As noted in this thread.

• Thursday, October 23, 2008. Black Swan Folk Club at the Black Swan Inn. Peasholme Green. York. 8:00 PM.

• Saturday, October 25, 2008. House session and potluck at the residence of Elizabeth "Liz the Sqeak" Draper. Plaistow, London. 7:00 PM until whenever. Please bring songs, food, and beverages to share. LtS or send her a PM for location, direction, and other details.

Latest on recovering heart patient. I have just scoured the internet for, and printed the leaflet that he imagined he'd brought home from the hospital. He's busy reading it. He's eating less rubbish and more fruit. Sleeping a bit during the day, but going to bed earlier and getting up by 8 am. He musn't go outside in wet and windy weather, so today he's a couch potato refining his aimlessly mooching about indoors skills. Before I saw the dos and dont's I got him to unscrew a jar of pasta sauce. He mustn't do that. He's watching Coronation Street, we haven't watched soaps for about 3 years. Half an hour of Corrie later and he's looking for something else to do. Time for tea.

Jack,

I's not a traditional folk song, it's about the Gowanus Canal rather than the River Thames, it's from the USA rather than Great Britain, and the author --- yours truly -- is not a member of the FAB Club, although he has been a guest performer and will be again. However, the song Down the Gowanus is about the bargemen, as well as the other characters who inhabit the waterway's environs. Click here to hear Down the Gowanus online or to download it for free.

Enjoy!
