Where have you played recently?(Survey)

27 Nov 07 - 04:30 PM (#2203388)
Subject: Where have you played recently?(Survey)
From: greg stephens

On a recent thread on the future of folk clubs, the conversation turned to the many outlets available nowadays for folk music, not all of them part of the folk scene in any sense. The thread diverted after a while, so I though I would generate a little discussion about this in its own thread.
There are many active musicians on this forum, amateur and pro and points in between. I'd just like to ask people to have a litle poke about in their diaries, wallcharts, calendars etc, and come up with a list of places you've played recently. And, for that matter, places you've listened to folk music, if you don't play. I've done the last 25 gigs I've played with the Boat Band; I could have added a few social sessions interleaved with those, but I don't kep a record of those.
The clssification I leave up to you, I made it up as I went along: a folk club in a pub I've called "folk club", for example, but a pub gig payed by the landlord I've called "pub". A dance at a wedding I've put under "private function", but a dance for the public I've called a dance.A dance in a village hall I've called a dance, but a concert in a village hall I've described as a concert. It doesn't matter if the classifications overlap, or don't make total sense. It will give the general idea: what I am looking for is where can folk music be found at the moment.
And a geographical location would help. My 25 were all in the UK.

4 pubs
4 village halls(concerts)
4 Private functions(birthdays/weddings)
3 Community events
3 Folk festivals
2 Other festivals
2 dances
2 Unclassifiable arts events
1 Folk club

The point of the initial discussion, by the by, was the importance and the future of the folk club. I was pointing out that in terms of my own life, folk clubs were a tiny percentage of the folk activites I was aware of. I look forward to hearing about other people's experiences recently.

>>All above are sinarounds<< No wonder you are happy, Mr Happy. Do you play whilst you are sinning LOL.

So to classify what Greg is asking for Mr Happy (I don't think he is asking you to reveal the actual venues, just clasify the type of location)
Yours would appear to be on a monthly basis

6 times in a pub
1 time in a Village Hall or similar place
and once at "Y Glan y Rafon" whatever that might be.

I'll get me coat and get off to the sinners arms :-)

Interpret your own "recently". I picked thew last twenty five gigs. Could be anywhere you've been in the last six months, the last ten times you've played a gig, whatever. Just enough to get an overall picture of what kind of places and events that folk music can be found at.

Mr Villan,

Thanks for your concern as to clarification of the survey q's.

I actually had taken the opportunity to 'plug'/ publicise some events I regularly attend.

If stats needed, they work out as:

4 pubs

1 private members club

'what I am looking for is where can folk music be found at the moment.'

With that in mind, my responses are

played at home with friends - monthly early and Celtic session

played at Elderhostel early music workshop in California, 1000 miles away

played in church - tunes from the shape-note tradition

attended Irish band Chulrua. Missouri valley folklife society concert. Kansas City

attended Alisdair Fraser and Natalie [forget last name] in Lawrence Kansas a couple months ago

may go to a folk duo tomorrow in the 'parlor' at the Mountain Music Shoppe in suburban Johnson County, Kansas

So, a lot of places, but none of them a pub! I guess my monthly group counts as a club, but I don't think that's what you mean by a 'folkclub.'

Well, let's see...since September I have played the following:

3 Celtic festivals
1 (specifically)Scottish festival
1 3-day Irish music retreat
0 coffeehouses
0 house concerts
0 pubs
4 AFM downtown street gigs
3 restaurant gigs
60 retirement community gigs...

...earn my keep from it, I do; and 2008 is looking pretty good.
Cheers.

At Finn's (the new version of the Paekakariki pub). (Probably only New Zealanders will know about this, but it's an interesting story). Incidentally, in the unlikely event of any Kiwis reading this, the new pub does an open-mic session every other Wednesday and would love to get some talent in!

Pukurua Bay folk club

....sung in Church choir every Sunday

.... rehearsing "Messiah" by G.F. Handel for 09/12/07 performance.

(Last two may not count as "folk music", but why not? Where else do lots of people who wouldn't know a folk-song if it bit them on the ankle - sing two-hundred year old words and tunes on a regular basis? And what else is that, but folk music?)

Well, if we go 25, it's a neighborhood (James Bay) coffee house Friday night folk clubby regular session in Victoria, BC, and then morning and evening commutes on the Bainbridge Island-Seattle ferry back 12 work days in August. That would come to 24 plus 1!

5 actual coffeehouse
2 private "corporate" events
3 Music in the park

I played a wake last week. Walked in the blues bar where folks were celebrating as requested of a friend wqho had died last week of a massive heart attack (age 44) Best collection of musicians I have ever played with ( in the blues idiom) Felt like I was blessed to get to share a stage with them.   Got to play my brand new bass, ( a blonde UB Hawkes SUperswing ala the old Kay Swingmaster of the 50s and 60s.

Since I started my desk job (that'd be the desk with sliders and control knobs) earlier this year, there have been:

5 pub gigs
3 church halls
2 university halls
1 community centre
1 hotel function

All either paid or for charities, although the pay doesn't even approach minimum-wage when you consider the time spent - I'm averaging somewhere between £3 and £5 an hour. Still, it lets me legitimately claim acquisition of PA gear and guitars as a business expense, which is very useful tax-wise. :-)

Graham.

What did I do? That posted before I'd finished.
1 concert (Time Bandits, worth hearing)

Twice a week dancing (and sometimes caling) to recorded music at EFDSS clubs. And before you all jump on me, these clubs also organise public dances with live music, train the dancers who dance at them, buy the CDs and pay our PLA fees.

Once a month band workshop (organised by the Lancashire EFDDS group) where we practise playing dance tunes, and twice a year some of them (more confident than me) play for dance clubs.

Since May, I've played folk music in the following settings:

Northwest Folklife Festival (Band Scrambles, Jams, and Sing-Alongs)
Girl Scout Meeting (sing-along)*
Coffee House Jam Session (4)
Balboa Park Jam Session (2 or 3)
Song Circles and Jam Sessions in private homes (15 to 20)
Church Service ( about 7 times in choir* and once as soloist)
My dad's memorial service (celebration of his life) - composed and sang a song
Retirement, Assisted Living, or Nursing/Convalescent/Rehab Residences (about 150)*

The last category is the only one I've been paid for. That one pays the bills so I can afford to do the unpaid gigs and jams.

*mixed-genre music, some of it being "folk"
