05 Dec 07 - 01:42 AM (#2208870) Subject: ADD: Rainchild (David Massengill) From: Joe Offer I've drifted away from singer-songwriters in recent years, but it's worth taking the time to pay attention to the work of David Massengill. I picked up Massengill's 2006 We Will Be Together CD in a cutout bin a couple weeks ago. Here are the lyrics, as printed in the CD booklet: Rainchild (David Massengill, 2006) There was a child out in the rain And no one knew from where he came He just appeared as heaven-sent And he seemed happy and content O'Brian's boy set out alone In mind to fetch the milk cows home A heavy rain, a grove of trees There sat a child among the leaves Rainchild, rainchild, rainchild A red-haired child, small and fragile Whose face was brightened by a smile At first he thought it was a ghost Come from a cemetery host O'Brian's boy was full of fear He ran off like a startled deer At home he told of what he'd seen A ghostly child upon the green Rainchild, rainchild, rainchild The parents wept to hear this tale And they took up the search as well Their own son died the age of three Same as this child of mystery They found him down where the quail run Toddling toward the dimming sun His hair and clothes weren't even damp Was he left by a gypsy camp? Rainchild, rainchild, rainchild He'd gone to sleep in someone's lap Awakened by a thunderclap So many questions still remain Sometimes a life is unexplained Perhaps the hand of Providence Had left him here in recompense And so this child, prologue unknown They loved him as their very own Rainchild, rainchild, rainchild |

I wanted to learn this song several years ago and talked to David Massengill. I asked him what the song was about, and it is as it is. He wrote this about an actual event that occurred in his home town many years ago. The red haired child grew into a man that did handyman jobs around the town as he grew older. He was known by most of the town folk. Gorgeous song. |
