I am hunting for the rest of the lyrics of this song, but I remeber only the chorus and I don't even remember where I learnt it (probably primary school back in Bristol in the 60's!).

This sounds like another version of the Cooper of Fife (Child #277).

There's a few versions in the DT. Try this here

Hi Phil

Thank you. You have put to rest a troubling frustration of many years and others irritation when I could remember so little of the song.
I can now see myself as a primary school kid learning that song and loving it, revelling the what occured to me as the silliness of the lyrics and the brightness of the tune. No wonder it stuck with me.
Now I can teach my daughter too, and pass it on.
