08 Dec 07 - 04:08 PM (#2211482) Subject: BS: Under the alligators, through a tunnel From: katlaughing Yesterday, my grandson, Morgan, 4 years old, told me he wanted to go see Santa. Then, before I could reply, he told me "you have to go under the alligators and through a tunnel" before you can get to Santa. That conjured up all kinds of images in my brain...pretty funny ones, too. None of us have any idea where he heard that or if he dreamed it up entirely on his own, which is quite possible. So, anyway...what "kids say the darndest things" have you heard recently, esp. about the holiday season? |

The London department stores made a big thing of 'going to see Father Christmas'. It usually involved a trip in a rocket or submarine (it must have been real, you could feel it moving, and see the passing scenery through the window) before you arrived at the Grotto had got your present. I must have been taken there in half term, and I can remember being offered the chance of going to see another Father Christmas (this didn't confuse me, I knew they weren't the 'real' one but I enjoyed the show) if I traded my unwanted present, which could be given to one of the cousins on my mothers long christmas present list. |

Could be as he knows elevators and like to go on them, but they've never been associated with Santa, Christmas, or shopping for him. The kid does have an inventive mind, though, so it'd be a short leap for him to use that.:-) Hate to say it, but in the middle of the night I got to thinking maybe he said "crocodile!" Well, we were on our way to Blackpool with our buckets and spades, young daughter singing in the back, me navigating. She thought I was correcting her words, so now its - "Baa baa black sheep, have you any wool left?" I used to supervise a playgroup, and took them on a country walk. "Oh look, there's a hare". James looked most apprehensive, I don't know what he thought a hare was, or how big. And "look what I've found"... holding a newt on my hand. "Is it a crocodile?" Being 4 must be a most confusing time. |

The Western fence Lizard looks a like a gator too and they will snap at you if you pick them up. I know this of course because of my marmalade cat who I call a variety of names depending upon my mood. Today she's fatso but I mean that in the most endearing way! She's not so much fat as she is simply gigantic. She went through a phase where she was smacking the tails off all the lizards in the neighborhood. When she got all their tails off, she'd sometimes grab the lizards themselves to play with and bring the terrified fellas into the house. I learned about the fence lizards tendency to snap by having to rescue a few of them from Fatso's eveil clutches. At least Inky doesn't go for lizards. he restricts himself to mice, rats, large water bugs and his evil nemesis, Clarke The Cat from the next street over. Clarke is distantly related to Freddy Krueger and once nearly succeeded in ripping Inky's left ear off. Thankfully, our heroic Vet was able to sew it up and Inky's no worse for the wear. |

Grownups! They never get anything exactly right! My younger sister, when four or so, had a great talent for re-working words. We still often refer to helicopters and pussycats as pollypoppers and tuppa-tas. She's in her middle forties and is long resigned to this mildly humiliating family teasing. |

At four years of age, my nephew would probably have applied the term to anything from a movie made in 1934 to a TV episode from 1956. The "old" was my wording; he just said "Green Hardy movies". That's how my father became known as Grrrrr Bumpa. This is the same kid who called my mother "Raggy" but we all thought that was pretty accurate and didn't correct him. He's 23, well over 6' tall and covered in tatooes now but every chance we get we remind him of when he was 2 or 3 and his favorite show was Lassie reruns. At the end of every show when Lassie and Timmy walked off into the distance he would wail and cry and carry on "Lassie noooooo...don't gooooo". He doesn't think it's very funny but the rest of us sure get a kick out of it. |

Becca, your story about your sone reminded me of my Cousin kenny who is now a grown man and about 6 foot 4. When I was 17 he was 4. He and his mother came down to visit us for a couple of weeks and I was the only non-adult left in the house, my sister having grown up and gotten married. Kenny stuck to me like glue and being a typical annoying teenager, that bugged me. I set him up in my bedroom to watch Treasure Island on TV but he kept coming out to find me to tell me what was happening in the movie. I told him I'd seen it before and he didn't need to keep telling me. Finally, he came out again and when I scolded him, he came over and whispered urgently in my ear "But he scares me!" Who scares you, i asked. "Long Johns Shivers!" he cried! I relented, took mercy on the poor kid and told him he didn't have to finish watching the movie if the pirate scared him. Then he said "but I want to watch the movie" - thereby demonstrating that even little kids like to be scared so long as there's somebody near by. He convinced me to go back and sit on th ebd with him and every time "Long Johns Shivers" appeared, he'd burrow his little head under my arm until I told him it was safe to look. |
