I was at that concert in Liverpool - he was brilliant (but I might be forgiven for being biased). Sorry I missed your ceilidh in the Irish Centre. From: PoppaGator Well, I live in New Orleans, where it would be easier to list prominent artists who have NOT played. I can't even think of a good answer to that modified question ~ that is, I can't think of any prominent musician who has NEVER been here. I can think of a couple of prominent rock-era acts who avoided/missed New Orleans for years but eventually did play here: Grateful Dead: Their first (and for many years, their only) visit to town was to open the city's first "underground" (hippy-style) dance-concert venue, the Warehouse (more preccisely, "a" warehouse ~ the posters always read "At A Warehouse, [address] Tchoupitoulas St.") This was shortly before I first arrived here, probably 1966-67. Band members were arrested for possession of marijuana (what a surprise!) and, although their record company eventually got them off the hook, they didn't come back for a couple of decades. You might recall that the incident is memorialized in a GD song lyric, "...busted / down on Bourbon Street..." (My future brother-in-law Charley, incidentally, had his picture in the paper the next morning handcuffed to Dead member Rod "Pigpen" McKernan.) After many years, New Orleans downtown Seanger Theater finally became a semi-regular tour stop for the Dead, so in the 3end they relented in their determination never to comeback again.. Eric Burden: He made his first (and perhaps only) appearance in New Orleans (setting for the lyric to his best-known recording, "House of the Rising Sun") one late-1980s weeknight at Tipitina's, to a less-than-full house. I'm unsure of the date, but I do remember that the Animals had long since broken up; I happened to be there and can report that Eric was looking pretty old. Guess what he did as an encore? From: GUEST,hp I live in a small industrial village in South Wales [Skewen ] which way back in the 60s had a pretty good ballroom.In 65 we had the Who and on the folk side of things a decade later [and in another venue] The Boys Of The Lough. A load of other excellent bands played in the ballroom including Manfred Man, Dave Edmunds and Love Sculpture, Paul Butterfield ,Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band, PP Arnold, The Hollies,The Moody Blues with Denny Laine and my own favourites The Eyes Of Blue. hp |

From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego I really have two "home towns," the one where I grew from youth to adulthood, Fresno, CA, and my present home of San Diego. In the former, major names were not frequent visitors. I did meet and hear Jesse "Lone Cat" Fuller, Gene Bluestein, Randy Sparks (pre-Christy Mistrels), The Kingston Trio, The Limeliters, Mark Spoelstra and The Diamonds, among others. In San Diego, where I've spent the last 40 years, I've seen (in no particular order) Gordon Lightfoot, Chet Atkins, Garth Brooks, The Doobie Brothers, The Pogues (just recently), The Romeros, (who live in the area along with Ravi and Anoushka Shankar and violinist/fiddler Mark O'Connor), Tom Paxton, Sam Hinton, Mike Seeger, John Stewart, Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers (with and without the First Edition), The New Christy Minstrels, Joan Baez, Paul Simon and many others. We have many large performance venues and several colleges and universities that attract a wide variety of acts. It is a privilege to have such access. |

What a great little group they had for a while, years ago in Cambridge, Mass! Probably much more important and more influential than anyone gives them credit for ~ I beieve that much of their influence has been "second hand." (That is, all the greatest performers in or near the "folk scene" of that era couldn't help but be influenced by the Kweskin Band, and those folks, in turn, spread that influence far and wide.) |

From: GUEST,Jeff Grew up in Mentor, Ohio, USA and saw at a local 'teen' club the Jeff Beck group @ an afternoon performance. Beck, Rod Stewart, Nicky Hopkins, Carmen Appice, Ron Wood...almost an out of body experience as it was a small club w/only about 200-250 people just crammed in there. The same club often had the James Gang featuring Glenn Cunningham BEFORE he moved to SF to become the guitarist for Pacific, Gas and Electric. The same band had Joe Walsh on RHYTHM guitar...the band's name was from the drummer Jimmy Fox. Tom Kriss was the orginal bass player to be replaced by Dale Peters after the 1st LP called 'Yer Album' was released. Also, The Choir...'It's Cold Outside'(small regional hit), Cyrus Erie featuring Eric Carmen pre 'All By Myself'. Both bands dropped members and became The Raspberries w/'Go All The Way' as a national hit. Wally Bryson was the lead guitarist and the coolest, most genuinely affable(from a fan's standpoint)musician I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. If you can secure a copy of 'It's Cold Outside' written by Dan Klawon and sung by Dave Smalley listen to the bass line. That's Dave Burke and he's 16 years old at the time...remarkable. There were very good local bands at that time...'Poe' had a guitarist named Ralph Cuda...probably the best guitarist of all the local talent. Moses was another really good local band that never got a shot at a record deal. Randy Klawon(Dan's cousin, I think) was in that band...while not being a flashy gun-slinger type of player he sure knew how to 'rock hard'. A few years later 'Yes' performed at a local Jr college called Lakeland CC. The opening act was Mylon Lefevre(sp?)and Holy Smoke. The concert was in the gym which only held about 3000 people. Oh yeah, Glass Harp featuring Phil Keaggy played locally alot as they were from Youngstown. The Bob Seeger System played a local dance club as well as the Human Beinz. This was all within 5 miles of my house. NE Ohio during the mid-late 60s was a real hot-bed of original talent. Some of whom went on to become household names. |

Hank Williams died on Jan. 1, 1953...Boone's career began a couple of years later. As I live in the Los Angeles area, I guess nearly all the greats have appeared here. Of the ones I saw, the biggest disappointment was Gordon Lightfoot; he sound drunk or stoned the night I saw him. The best, Harry Belafonte...he could make magic with an audience! We are talking about 35 years ago and near 50 years ago respectively. |

All the greats of jazz, rock etc have played Paris, and most/all the classical greats from the time of Handel onwards have played there. Once, he seemed a little out of it, but still put on a credible show. Several years later, not long before his near-death experience, he seemed clean and sober and even referred to his battle with the bottle during the performance. There were many allusions to his drinking in songs such as "Christian Island," where he'll "fill my cup with the whiskey of the Highlands," and "Ordinary Man," where the line, "another empty bottle and another tale to tell" may be a clue. Apparently, he has gotten a glimpse of the "other side" and wants to stay awhile longer. |

It was a one day affair. I was 16 at the time and as I remember Bill Monroe and the Blugrass Boys Bill Clifton and the Echo Mountain Boys Tom Paxton Derek Brimstone. From: Sandy Mc Lean My home town is actually a village in the interior of Cape Breton Island, but many of the world's best Celtic performers have graced the stage at Celtic Colours concerts there. To pick the greatest would be far too subjective! The first public appearance on stage of The Rankin Family also took place there long before world wide fame called. Of course they were from only a few miles away and we all just called them Buddy's kids. Great fiddlers such as Winston Fitzgerald and Buddy MacMaster regularly played for dances there. That all being said my dear departed friend and cousin Donnie MacKinnon ranks as the most talented person that I have ever known. As subjective as that may be he was the greatest in my eyes! |
