30 Dec 07 - 03:46 PM (#2225055) Subject: First song of the New Year From: Waddon Pete Hello, Well....here's another year! It's good to see that there are a lot of opportunities to perform our music on New Year's Day and beyond. The question is.... What will be the first song you perform/ed in the New Year? Was the song chosen for any specific reason? (...and Auld Lang Syne doesn't count!) Happy New Year! Peter |
30 Dec 07 - 03:51 PM (#2225058) Subject: RE: First song of the New Year From: Cats We'll sing 'Levy Dew' at about 30 seconds past midnight outside on the drive in, hopefully, a clear still night. Wonderful. |
31 Dec 07 - 10:30 AM (#2225521) Subject: RE: First song of the New Year From: Waddon Pete I suppose it really ought to be "Carol for New Year's Day" which is in the database. Carol But I guess someone else at the session will beat me to it! I still haven't deceided on my "first song". How about you? Best wishes and all the best for 2008, Peter |

31 Dec 07 - 01:51 PM (#2225670) Subject: RE: First song of the New Year From: Saro I find it hard to resist starting with Dave Goulder's "January Man", I think it is a hard one to beat... And a Happy New year to all! Saro |

01 Jan 08 - 12:16 PM (#2226193) Subject: RE: First song of the New Year From: John J I've just arrived home from our New Years Day sing & session in Warburton, Cheshire. Shanty Alan always sings 'January Man' - that's when the New Year starts for me. John |
02 Jan 08 - 11:57 AM (#2226726) Subject: RE: First song of the New Year From: Waddon Pete We, too, had a great session with lots of old favourites and new ones to add to the fun. The first song of the session was one about going to America to hunt the buffalo and my first song of the year was "By and By". What was also good was meeting up with some-one I hadn't met with for over 20 years! Best wishes, Peter |
02 Jan 08 - 12:32 PM (#2226743) Subject: RE: First song of the New Year From: Amos ALthough I performed it for only myself, the first song of the new year was "THe Ballad of Pancho and Lefty". I needed to assure myself that the story made as much sense as I thought it did. A |

04 Jan 08 - 09:28 AM (#2228183) Subject: RE: First song of the New Year From: Jack Blandiver The first song I actually sang in public this year was Child #7 Earl Brand at Les's singaround in Chorlton on the 2nd; a freewheeling narrative that always puts me in mind of The Watermargin... |

31 Dec 08 - 10:59 AM (#2528298) Subject: RE: First song of the New Year From: Waddon Pete Now we are standing on the edge of 2009.....what will be your first song of the New Year? Will it be the same as last year? Did your choice of song in January 2008 reflect your choice of songs for the rest of the year? Whatever and wherever you sing or play, have a great time and enjoy yourself. Best wishes, Peter |

04 Jan 09 - 07:48 AM (#2531082) Subject: RE: First song of the New Year From: Waddon Pete Well I finally made the first session of the year after a false start! A cracking session it was too! Songs old and new, room packed with singers, musicians and listeners, plenty of unaccompanied singing with great chorus participation. Folk dying? Not round 'ere mate! First song of the New Year (sung at home) Coulter's Candy. First song sung in public, Roving Journeyman. How about you? Best wishes, Peter |
04 Jan 09 - 11:42 AM (#2531230) Subject: Lyr Add: WINTER - A DIRGE (Robert Burns) From: Jack Blandiver My first public song of 2009 was Winter - A Dirge by Robert Burns (to be sung to the tune of MacPherson's Rant). I've been singing this for years, but have never heard anyone else do it. Here it is anyway... The wintry west extends his blast, And hail and rain does blaw; Or the stormy north sends driving forth The blinding sleet and snaw: While, tumbling brown, the burn comes down, And roars frae bank to brae; And bird and beast in covert rest, And pass the heartless day. The sweeping blast, the sky o'ercast, The joyless winter day Let others fear, to me more dear Than all the pride of May: The tempest's howl, it soothes my soul, My griefs it seems to join; The leafless trees my fancy please, Their fate resembles mine! Thou Power Supreme, whose mighty scheme These woes of mine fulfil, Here firm I rest; they must be best, Because they are Thy will! Then all I want-O do Thou grant This one request of mine!- Since to enjoy Thou dost deny, Assist me to resign. |

05 Jan 09 - 02:52 PM (#2532256) Subject: RE: First song of the New Year From: BB Surprisingly, The Seeds of Love. Out with our local mummers, and we always have a song & music session afterwards. One of the people in the pub asked if anyone knew it. Not really what I would have chosen to sing in those circumstances, but there you go - it makes a change from the usual seasonal ones that we do. Bleagh But if all goes well, I will be singing next on the first Thursday in February at the Blackmore club in Writtle.
