Tune Req: Ballad of Mt Nardi [oz]

Hi Folks, would anyone know or know where I could get a listen to this tune: the Ballad of Mt Nardi. the lyrics are in
Eureka Songs by Arthur Pike
a collection of songs celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Eureka Stockade 3 December 1854.
The song is about the protests in northern NSW [New South Wales, Australia] to protect the forests there.
Jacko Kevans would have been the one to ask, this is his neighborhood! He is missed again!    Thanks for any help.       Patrick

Ballad of Mt Nardi       by Bruce McNicols

Sixty-four arrested for being in the forest.
For being in possession of a different point of view.
It's always been the same, since the convicts came before us.
It's back to the judge, if you stand and tell what's true.

Cops and robbers early, stealing from the forest.
Getting in before us with the law and order frieze.
Grim and never speaking. Gruff and all foreboding.
Treating us like criminals for trying to save some trees.

Chorus: It was Virgin Rainforest, never logged before.
Life giver. Gene pool. Soon it would be gone forevermore.
And violent confrontation was defeating us by degree,
And they were logging the heart of Nightcap Park
For a steamship company.

Little bit of mischief. Little bit of violence.
I could get arrested at all down here today.
And Premier Wran is watching. Voiceless in the silence.
Sometimes we common people seem to have no rights,
We have no say.

'Cause with the Adelaide Steamship Company,
It's dollars make the plan.
And they're wiping out the remnants, as fast as they can.
They're wiping out the remnants, as fast as they can

Note: The demonstration at Terania Creek and My Nardi were critical to the process of transforming these contested
forest areas in northern New South Wales from potential logging dumps to the World Heritage-listed Nightcap National Park.
The Adelaide Steamship Company [who owned the logging company, Standard Sawmills] went bankrupt in the following decade.

Its a long time ago now but Bruce was living just north of Nimbin when I last met him around '85. Its a long shot but he could still be living in the district. Try checking the white pages or calling the Nimbin community centre to see if he is still around and then ask him directly. I know I seen it in a songbook published in the district but dont think I still have a copy any more. Best of luck in your search.

Cheers,

Andrez

From dim dark memory, I think Bruce used to play backup or accompany Marg Roadknight around Melbourne in the early seventies. Marg posts to the Mudcat. Perhaps you could track her down via an old post and PM her to see if she still has any contact with Bruce or knows who might know.

Cheers,

Andrez

Googling Bruces name + Nimbin gives you a whole lot of hits. One of which is this link: http://www.scu.edu.au/research/cpsj/human_rights_2003/HR_Concert.html

If you copy and paste this URL and then do a search for Bruces name on this page you will find a phone number. (From the description in the article, it sounds like the Bruce I knew). Try it and good luck. If you are lucky you might want to repost the song with the chords.

Cheers,

Andrez

G'day Andrez,

Actually ... you could PM Margret RoadKnight - she posts to Mudcat occasionally - under her own name (Note the distinctive spelling ... and capitalisation!).

Regardsm,

Bob

Thanks Bob,

I think it will be up to Patart who posed the initial query re the Ballad song chords. Patart could call Marg or follow the alternative process I outlined above. Either way involves calling Bruce directly if the query for the chords is sustained.

I'd be curious to know the eventual outcome of the search.

Cheers,

Andrez
