Idea for bringing songs out of threads

07 May 99 - 10:39 AM (#76384)
Subject: Idea for bringing songs out of threads.....
From: Margo

John in Brisbane made a comment in the "more music and less BS" thread that gave me an idea. John said that discussions about songs appear in some of our non musical titled threads, and since he doesn't have the time to read them all, he misses out on the musical discussion. He wished there was a way to bring those musical conversations to the surface. Well.......

I figure that since many of us know how to do the wondrous Blue Clicky Thing, we could take it upon ourselves to create a new thread with a link. So if a thread starts out with "Your favorite flowers" and a subsequent discussion of "Where have all the flowers gone" ensues, we sensitive and caring 'catters will think "say, John in Brisbane might want to see this", creating a new thread called "surfaced; Where have all the flowers gone", with the link to the beginning of the discussion.

(The grammer checker hates my loooooong sentences)Whaddya think, companions?

I LIKE IT!! So many great songs are buried in the threads with no way to search them out unless one knows exactly, precisely what to look for or who posted it. This seems like a great way to go about it. I especially like the lead word, "surfaced", showing in easily understood terms, the context in which the song is referenced.

A great idea can't understand why there aren't more comments!
If I could do the blue clicky thing I'd start a thread called "Good Idea" and point it here.

Okay BAZ: how to do the blue clicky thing.

What I did was copy the quote from below and paste it into an e-mail message to myself. WHen I received the message I filed it in a folder called "keep these" in my Inbox on the e-mail programme. Now when I want to do a blue clicky thing I just go to that message, copy the 2 lines, paste it into the thread and paste the site address over the Mudcat site address. Hey presto! (except that my explanation might not work because the 2 lines might come up as a clicky thingy not as text. But here goes:

Quote from Joe Offer (don't ask me which thread it is in) "I dunno, but there sure are times I wish Mudcatters would speak in line breaks and HTML links:

"

All right, I found it.

cut & paste this text into your thread posting then replace the Mudcat address with the site address you are recommending

Very good, Helen - the second time, anyhow. Sorry I can't fix your first bumble, but I don't have my cookie here in the library. I think it's a good idea to cross-link the forum as much as we can. If there are multiple threads on a topic, it's nice when people provide links to those threads, or to related songs in the database. Sure, other people can search - but they're much more likely to go to information if a link is provided. There is a wealth of information here in the forum, and it's good if we can help people access it.
Of course, it also helps if people give threads appropriate titles...

The only thing that worries me about that is space and redundancy. How many threads can the system handle? And, how many times does a song come up in different threads? I think this could get out of hand, if everyone was to post a "surfaced" thread each time a song came up.

And, what about songs that are already in the DT, but the "surfaced" threadposter might not know that? I think it might get cumbersome. There must be some solutin other than people having to search through the threads. We lost Bruce O today because he said he just doesn't have time to go searching anymore and he'd been here since 1997.

I, personally, have not had a problem with this, but then I AM a social butterfly of sorts, so I am probably one of the ones, some of them wish would go away. Oh, well, too bad! This Mudder is entrenched and not about to go without her Mudcat!

Maybe one easy way for people to spot songs while scanning thread posting would be for everyone to put the titles and lyrics, within post, in bold and bigger print. Those commands are easy.

Or, even better, this is good, instead of our names listed as posters in a specific thread, IF we are going to post lyrics or something else about a song, we put that in where our name would go, instead. That way anyone looking at posters in a thread, could instantly see which one to click on for pertinent info. Oh, I like it!!!

Kat-

Maybe its just my computer, but I cannot change my codename in the "From" line. I doubt I'm the only one, so that idea wouldn't work. I think maybe that got changed when some regulars were posting anonymously. Now to do that, you have to use a different browser or someone else's computer.

It WOULD be nice if somehow, when someone started a thread, if there was one already with the same name, it would automatically pop up. Right now there are three "Shenandoah" threads, a few weeks ago there were two "Beeswings" that started within a few days of each other - I'm sure that happens often. But that's probably not a realizable piece of technology.

Maybe instead of a "surfaced" thread for each song that comes up in a "b.s." thread (NOI), we could have one "surfaced songs" thread, and all the surfaced songs could be put there on separate messages. Persons who like to glean songs from those threads could just search this thread for other likely threads to muse over. Still time-consuming, but less so than searching ALL the threads.

Just thoughts....

Oh well, it didn't show up in the listing of posters, BUT it would show as people scroll down, so could be used for the purpose of highlighting important song stuff?

So people could use the SONG as the subject, and then in the message tell a (very) little about how it came up and what is there (Lyric, history, MIDI clip, etc) and maybe even provide a blue clicky thing to the thread is happened in. (Those clicky-impaired persons like myself could provide the thread title and those interested could do a forum search - I think by Subject that feature is still working for everybody (Body searches don't work for everyone).

Actually, no, that wasn't what I meant. sorry, I was interuppted by a phone call. What you are onto would still require a new thread. What I meant, was in the BS threads, when and if someone posted something about a song specifically, they could post it in the subject line of their posting with bold print in caps, so when someone is cruising through, scanning the BS, they could easily spot the postings that are relevant. Or....is that a lot of BS? *BG*

campfire....I love your idea of having a specific thread for "surfaced" songs. As a cyber-neophyte, seems to me, it would be the simplest way to address the problem all around. I also think it would be the easiest on the system????(Don't know really) Any other word for "surfaced" to make it more understandable to someone just coming in????? i.e. "Other songs"....or.....???? Curious to know from Bruce O., gargoyle etc.,if something like this would relieve their frustrations.

Actually, combining it with Kat's idea of putting the song title as the subject in the "originating" thread, too, would make it really easy for the gleaner to find. Search the "Emerged Songs" thread, see a song title you want to check out, go to the original thread, and find it right away by looking at the Subjects scroll past. I myself would probably end up reading the postings a few before, and a few after, then a few before that.....

Actually, I think it's relatively easy to sort out the chit-chat from the song stuff. Thread titles usually give things away quite well. If you want to avoid chit-chat, avoid thread titles that end with an ellipsis... Sorting the wheat from the chaff is usually pretty easy.
However, it IS sometimes hard to find information on a particular song when it's in threads with inappropriate titles. Remember that we can change the subject in a message to something that will show up in a search.
Maybe anarchy is the best policy. I hate rules.
I'm in the library at the University of Colorado and I've been illegally parked for two hours because I figure the meter maids aren't out on Friday night. I guess I'd better go out and see if my car got towed. G'nite. See you next time I find a library.

I like the idea of a particular thread for the surfaced or emerged discussions. The idea is to remedy the inability of a person to browse every thread to find something musical. That way, a person could skip all the "BS", and leave the BS-ing to us!

That reminds me of an old joke: What do you get when you cross a greyhound and a skunk?

You get a stinkin' bus! HaHa

It would help Dick and me if we could identify that there are song lyrics buried in the "BS" threads. We go looking to harvest the songs from the threads and might miss some buried in long discussion threads. We also would not have to search those threads if knew songs were always identified (fat chance). It would also be better if people pointed to lyrics in the DT instead of reprinting them - makes threads bulkier than they need be to repeat stuff. If you do copy lyrics from the DT to threads, please say that is what you are doing - it save us comparing it to what is there to see whether it is sufficiently different to be entered again as a different version of the same song. Thanx.

Good point Susan. It seems that a few suggestions have arisen:

Post a new thread -or- put songs mentioned in CAPS

Call a new thread surfaced song -or- emerged song

If there was a thread called,ie. surfaced: Where have all the flowers gone, and then upon entering the thread there is a short sentence like "From thread named Favorite Restaurants" with a link that goes directly to the discussion. I am trying to imagine how it would be for a first timer to this site. I think that would be easy to understand what is going on.

See what I mean, Jelly Bean?

I think we need to be careful to balance things out so that new lyrics are easy to find, but so that they're in a place where they serve to contribute to the discussion. We've tried starting new "add lyrics" and "add tune" threads, and I'm not sure I like that idea myself. Oftentimes, the song stands alone in its own little thread, separate from the related discussion, and I think that tends to impede the discussion. A song is only half a song if you don't know the story behind it. I wonder if putting ADD LYRICS in the "subject" title would be enough to alert Susan and Dick, instead of starting a whole new thread when the song being posted is related to the discussion at hand. Susan, what do you think?
I was at the University of Colorado library the other night. They had great computers, but it cost me $17 for the parking ticket that I got at 10:22 on a Fridaya night. Now I'm back at a crummy computer in a neighborhool library. Darn.

Doesn't take much for me to get lost with computor stuff. Couldn't a thread be titled "????songs" (Other..Emerged...Surfaced) and have us be responsible for placing thread creep songs there...in their own thread with a link to the originating thread for the context??? I've even learned to "refresh" threads, between us all we could ensure the "Other songs" thread stays on the day's list...seems like it would be an easy enough thread to quickly scroll for any song titles we're interested in.????Having said all that, I would just do it and see what happens BUT...blue clicky things is still on my list of computor stuff I need to take a sec to learn...instead of reading threads.

TRouble with adding lyrics to a non-lyric thread is that, although Joe, Susan and I can edit threads we can't edit thread names.

When I originally had the idea to "bring songs out of threads, I was thinking mainly of the discussions about song origin and meanings, not so much lyrics. I figure the Lyric Add. threads could take care of that. I'm sorry abouut the confusion.

Now, what might be a good idea when we finally get everybody trained to do blue clicky things, is that we could post our lyrics wherever they fit into discussions, and then post a link to the lyrics in another thread with an appropriate title. The important things are that the lyrics are posted where Dick and Susan can find them, that they're also in threads where people can find them fairly easily in a forum search, that they're in a place where they contribute to the discussion at hand, and that we don't post lyrics that are in the database or that have already been posted.
Dick and Susan, maybe we should leave it to you to tell us what to do. You know full well, of course, that we'll probably ignore you....

Joe,...I think that's what I was fumbling to say...post the lyrics in their context, but add a "blue clicky thing" for the song title in a separate thread...(containing only lots of blue clicky song titles.) Going to the back of the class now, until I learn clicking.
