Needed: question songs

From: GUEST,cmcw

Hello all -

We are in need of question songs - doesn't matter if the question is answered or not. If there is already such a thread please will someone point me in the right direction. I wasn't able to find anything when I tried but I'm not really Mudcat literate either.

Thanks very much

Subject: Lyr Add: WHO PUT THE BOMP (B Mann, G Goffin)
From: Azizi

Well, I think this is the question song of all times:

Who Put The Bomp (In The Bomp, Bomp, Bomp)

- Artist: Barry Mann
- peak Billboard position # 7 in 1961
- Words and Music by Barry Mann and Gerry Goffin

I'd like to thank the guy
Who wrote the song
That made my baby
Fall in love with me

Who put the bomp
In the bomp bah bomp bah bomp?
Who put the ram
In the rama lama ding dong?
Who put the bop
In the bop shoo bop shoo bop?
Who put the dip
In the dip da dip da dip?
Who was that man?
I'd like to shake his hand
He made my baby
Fall in love with me (yeah!!)

When my baby heard
"Bomp bah bah bomp "
"Bah bomp bah bomp bah bomp bomp"
Every word went right into her heart
And when she heard them singin'
"Rama lama lama lama"
"Rama ding dong"
She said we'd never have to part
So

Who put the bomp
In the bomp bah bomp bah bomp?
Who put the ram
In the rama lama ding dong?
Who put the bop
In the bop shoo bop shoo bop?
Who put the dip
In the dip da dip da dip?
Who was that man?
I'd like to shake his hand
He made my baby
Fall in love with me (yeah!!)

Each time that we're alone
Boogity boogity boogity
Boogity boogity boogity shoo
Sets my baby's heart all aglow
And everytime we dance to
Dip da dip da dip
Dip da dip da dip
She always says she loves me so
So

Who put the bomp
In the bomp bah bomp bah bomp?
Who put the ram
In the rama lama ding dong?
Who put the bop
In the bop shoo bop shoo bop?
Who put the dip
In the dip da dip da dip?
Who was that man?
I'd like to shake his hand
He made my baby
Fall in love with me (yeah!!)

END OF
MIXTURE

Backups conclude with 3 more (bomp bah bomp bah bomp, rama lama ding dong, dip da dip da
dip, boogity boogity shoo)'s with that same soloist overlaying "oh-oh-oh"s

FADE in the middle of the second one.

Subject: Lyr Add: RAINBOW CONNECTION (Kenny Loggins)
From: Azizi

I associate this song with Kermit the frog and other muppets who sang it in the award winning 1979 film The Muppet Movie

Rainbow Connection
{Kenny Loggins}

Why are there so many
Songs about rainbows
And whats on the other side
Rainbows are visions
Theyre only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide
So weve been told and some chose to
Believe it
But I know theyre wrong wait and see

Someday well find it
The rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me

Who said that every wish
Would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star
Somebody thought of that
And someone believed it
And look what its done so far
Whats so amazing
That keeps us star gazing
What so we think we might see

Someday well find it
That rainbow connection
The lovers the dreamers and me

All of us under its spell
We know that its probably magic

Have you been half asleep
And have you heard voices
Ive heard them calling my name
Are these the sweet sounds that called
The young sailors
I think theyre one and the same
Ive heard it too many times to ignore it
Theres something that Im supposed to be

Someday well find it
The rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me

Subject: Lyr Add: END OF THE WORLD
From: bobad

Here's another oldie:

"The End Of The World"

Why does the sun go on shining
Why does the sea rush to shore
Don't they know it's the end of the world
'Cause you don't love me any more

Why do the birds go on singing
Why do the stars glow above
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when I lost your love

I wake up in the morning and I wonder
Why everything's the same as it was
I can't understand, no, I can't understand
How life goes on the way it does

Why does my heart go on beating
Why do these eyes of mine cry
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when you said goodbye

Why does my heart go on beating
Why do these eyes of mine cry
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when you said goodbye

From: Little Hawk

BLOWIN' IN THE WIND
Written by Bob Dylan
As recorded by Bob Dylan on "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" (1963)

1. How many roads must a man walk down before you call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind; the answer is blowin' in the wind.

2. Yes, 'n' how many years can a mountain exist before it is washed to the sea?
Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head, and pretend that he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind; the answer is blowin' in the wind.

3. Yes, 'n' how many times must a man look up before he can see the sky?
Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have before he can hear people cry?
Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows that too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind; the answer is blowin' in the wind.

Subject: Lyr Add: WHO KILLED DAVEY MOORE (Bob Dylan)
From: Little Hawk

"Who Killed Davey Moore" - Bob Dylan

Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?

"Not I," says the referee,
"Don't point your finger at me.
I could've stopped it in the eighth
An' maybe kept him from his fate,
But the crowd would've booed, I'm sure,
At not gettin' their money's worth.
It's too bad he had to go,
But there was a pressure on me too, you know.
It wasn't me that made him fall.
No, you can't blame me at all."

Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?

"Not us," says the angry crowd,
Whose screams filled the arena loud.
"It's too bad he died that night
But we just like to see a fight.
We didn't mean for him t' meet his death,
We just meant to see some sweat,
There ain't nothing wrong in that.
It wasn't us that made him fall.
No, you can't blame us at all."

Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?

"Not me," says his manager,
Puffing on a big cigar.
"It's hard to say, it's hard to tell,
I always thought that he was well.
It's too bad for his wife an' kids he's dead,
But if he was sick, he should've said.
It wasn't me that made him fall.
No, you can't blame me at all."

Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?

"Not me," says the gambling man,
With his ticket stub still in his hand.
"It wasn't me that knocked him down,
My hands never touched him none.
I didn't commit no ugly sin,
Anyway, I put money on him to win.
It wasn't me that made him fall.
No, you can't blame me at all."

Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?

"Not me," says the boxing writer,
Pounding print on his old typewriter,
Sayin', "Boxing ain't to blame,
There's just as much danger in a football game."
Sayin', "Fist fighting is here to stay,
It's just the old American way.
It wasn't me that made him fall.
No, you can't blame me at all."

Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?

"Not me," says the man whose fists
Laid him low in a cloud of mist,
Who came here from Cuba's door
Where boxing ain't allowed no more.
"I hit him, yes, it's true,
But that's what I am paid to do.
Don't say 'murder,' don't say 'kill.'
It was destiny, it was God's will."

Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?

What's your name? I have seen you before
What's your name? May I walk you to your door?

Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ee

What's your name? Is it Mary or Sue?
What's your name? Do I stand a chance with you?
It's so hard to find a personality with charms like yours for me
Ooh-ee, ooh-ee, ooh-ee

I stood on this corner waiting for you to come along
So my heart could feel satisf-i-ied
So please let me be your Number One
Under the moon, under the stars, and under the sun

Oh-oh, what's your name? (what's your name?) Is it Mary or Sue?

DADDY, WHAT"S A TRAIN?
Daddy What's A Train
Daddy what's a train? Is it something I can ride?
Does it carry lots of grown-up folks and little kids inside?
Is it bigger than our house? Well how can I explain
When my little boy and girl ask me "Daddy what's a train?"

When I was just a boy and living by the track
Us kids would gather up the coal in big 'ole gunnysacks
Then we heard the warning sound as the train pulled into view
The engineer would smile and wave as she went rolling through

She blew so loud and clear, we had to cover up our ears
And we counted cars just as high as we could go
I can almost hear the steam those big old drivers scream
A sound my little kids will never know

Daddy what's a train? Is it something I can ride?
Does it carry lots of grown-up folks and little kids inside?
Is it bigger than our house? Well how can I explain
When my little boy and girl ask me "Daddy what's a train?"

I guess the times have changed, kids are different now
'Cause some don't even seem to know the milk comes from a cow
My little boy can tell the names of all the baseball stars
I remember how we memorized the names on railroad cars

The Wabash and the TP, Lackawanna, the IC
The Nickel-Plate and the good old Santa Fe
Just names out of the past, I guess they're fading fast
Every time I hear my little boy say

Daddy what's a train? Is it something I can ride?
Does it carry lots of grown-up folks and little kids inside?
Is it bigger than our house? Well how can I explain
When my little boy and girl ask me "Daddy what's a train?"

We climbed into the car, drove down into town
Right out the depot house, but no one was around
We searched the yard togheter for something I could show
But I knew there hadn't been a train for a dozen years or so

All the things I did when I was just a kid
How far away those memories appear
I guess it's plain to see they still mean a lot to me
'Cause my ambition was to be an engineer

Daddy what's a train? Is it something I can ride?
Does it carry lots of grown-up folks and little kids inside?
Is it bigger than our house? Well how can I explain
When my little boy and girl ask me "Daddy what's a train?"

Ballad of Birmingham

By Dudley Randall

(On the bombing of a church in Birmingham, Alabama, 1963)

"Mother dear, may I go downtown
Instead of out to play,
And march the streets of Birmingham
In a Freedom March today?"

"No, baby, no, you may not go,
For the dogs are fierce and wild,
And clubs and hoses, guns and jails
Aren't good for a little child."

"But, mother, I won't be alone.
Other children will go with me,
And march the streets of Birmingham
To make our country free."
"No, baby, no, you may not go,
For I fear those guns will fire.

But you may go to church instead
And sing in the children's choir."

She has combed and brushed her night-dark hair,
And bathed rose petal sweet,
And drawn white gloves on her small brown hands,
And white shoes on her feet.

The mother smiled to know that her child
Was in the sacred place,
But that smile was the last smile
To come upon her face.

For when she heard the explosion,
Her eyes grew wet and wild.
She raced through the streets of Birmingham
Calling for her child.

She clawed through bits of glass and brick,
Then lifted out a shoe.
"Oh, here's the shoe my baby wore,
But, baby, where are you?"

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Am I blue?
Are you from Dixie?
Are you lonesome tonight?
Are you tired of me, my darling?
Did your mother come from Ireland?
Didn't it rain?
Do you believe in magic?
Do you hear what I hear?
Does your chewing gum lose its flavor (on the bedpost overnight)?
Don't it make my brown eyes blue?
Don't it make you want to go home?
Donald, where's your troosers?
Has anybody seen my gal?
Have I told you lately (that I love you)?
Have you ever been lonely?
Is 'e an Aussie, Lizzie, is 'e?
Is it true what they say about Dixie?
Is you is or is you ain't ma baby?
May I sleep in your barn tonight, mister?
Shall I have it bobbed or shingled?
Shall we gather at the river?
Should old acquaintance be forgot?
What did Delaware?
What did you learn in school today?
What kind of noise annoys an oyster?
What you goin' do when the rent comes round?
What'll I do?
What's the matter with the mill?
Where did Robinson Crusoe go (with Friday on Saturday night)?
Where did you get that hat?
Where did you sleep last night?
Where is my wandering boy tonight?
Who knows where the time goes?
Who stole the kishka?
Who threw the overalls in Mrs. Murphy's chowder?
Who wrote the book of love?
Who's sorry now?
Whose Izzy is he? (Is he yours or is he mine?)
Why am I painting the living room?
Why do fools fall in love?
Why don't we get drunk (and screw)?
Will the circle be unbroken?
Will you go, Lassie, go?
Will you love me when I'm old?
Would you like to play the guitar?

Will The Roses Bloom In Heaven lyrics

*** Get Carter Family ringtones ***

In a cold and cheerless garret
In a room so dim so lone
In the frosty winter in silence
There was heard a little mourn

And a little child is asking
At the break of the day
Will the roses bloom in heaven
Tell me momma tell me pray

Will the roses bloom in heaven
Are there any gardens there
Any violets and clover
Way up with the angels there

Will the branches fill with blossoms
And in winter fill with snow
Will the roses bloom in heaven
Tell me momma ere I go

Now the room grows light and lighter
Every thing has caught a glow
Heaven seems to stretch about her
While dreams they just come and go

Then she whispered birds are singing
Songs of melody
And I see the roses blooming
While the angels beckon me

Then mother whispered
In the land so bright and fair
When the roses are blooming
There will be no parting there

Goodbye my little darling
For death is lingering here
And on the little pale face
There was not one trace of fear

I'm glad someone mentioned Tum Balalaika. I believe the received English translation of this song may have gotten mangled through the folk process. Here, I believe, is a correct translation; it was translated by Felix S. Cohen (who wrote the Handbook of Federal Indian Law).

Maiden, maiden tell me plain
What can grow, can grow without rain?
What can burn for endless years?
What can weep, can weep without tears?

Tum Bala, tum bala, tum balalaika

Tum bala, tum bala, tum balalaika

Tum balalaika spiel balalaika

Tum balalaika, freylekh zol zeyn

Foolish child, the answer is plain
Understanding grows without rain
Love can burn for endless years
A heart can weep, can weep without tears

The standard translation is "A stone can grow, can grow without rain"
"Farshteyn" (understanding) might have sounded like "a shteyn" (a stone). The former makes more sense to me since it fits better with "love" and "heart". Besides it scans better into English.

Good luck in your quest.

Do You Know The Way To Macramé? Reggie Miles © 2004

Do you know the way to macramé?
I get the knots all wrong. The string's so long. I lose my way.

Do you know the way to macramé?
I've tried embroidery, knitting, even some crochet.

Making bags, belts and headbands,
Add some beads. How does it look so far?
In a week, maybe two, a strap for my guitar,
Weeks turn into years how quick they pass.

You'd never guess, what I made next? Well, it's a coaster for your glass.

I've got lots of friends who macramé.
Think I'll give it a try, and make a tie with macramé.
Do you know the way to macramé?
They tell me, don't be shy, even a guy can macramé.

Other crafts can cost a bundle,
Spend a hundred bucks to make a hat
Out of empty beer cans pounded flat
Who, in their right mind, would wear that?

So here it sits, in my garage sale, for a dollar and a half.

Do you know the way to macramé?
Ma, ma, mama, mama, ma, macramé,
Ma, ma, mama, mama, ma, macramé.

Hanging plant and candleholders,
Made of rope or string or even twine.
Add a branch from a tree, now don't it look fine?
Tie your rows of knots in a straight line.

You'd never guess, the weeks I've spent, tying knots and killing time.

(Chorus)

From: LeTenebreux

I thought about "Where do you go to my lovely?" but decided it really wasn't a question song in the usual sense (several questions, one after the other) I have to confess that I didn't know of the song before seeing Wes Anderson's new film, "The Darjeeling Limited" (great movie, by the way).
How about "Day Is Done"?

Tell me why you're crying my son
Are you frightened like everyone?
Is it the thunder in the distance you fear?
Will it help if I stay very near?
I am here...

CHORUS:

And if you take my hand my son
All will be well when the day is done (2x)

Do you ask why I'm sighing my son?
You shall inherit what mankind has done
In a world filled with sorrow and woe
If you ask me why this is so
I really don't know

Tell me why you're smiling my son
Is there a secret you can tell everyone?
Do you know more than men that are wise?
Do you see what we all must disguise
In your loving eyes?

Daddy Dear, tell me true, is the world really round?
Tell me where is the bluebird of happiness found?
Tell me why can't I fly like the birds in the sky?
Daddy Dear, tell me why are there tears in your eyes?

Little one, yes, it's true, yes, the world's really round.

Next question...is this Rob LoPresti any relation at all to Ronald LoPresti? Ronald LoPresti was the composer of a Kansas Centennial symphony that I participated in back in Winfield, KS, 1961.

Well, it was a bit more than a 'symphony'...it was an entire musical pageant set to music. It was called 'Kanza'. Just curious.

WHAT'S THE LIFE OF A MAN?

As I was a walking one morning at ease
A viewing the leaves as they fell from the trees
All in slow motion appearing to be
And those that had withered, they fell from the trees

What's the life of a man anymore than the leaves?
A man has his season, so why should we grieve?
Though all thru this life, we appear fine and gay
Like the leaves we will wither and soon fade away

If you'd seen the leaves just a few days ago
So beautiful and bright they all seemed to grow
A frost came upon them and withered them all
A storm came upon them and down they did fall

If you look in the churchyard, there you will see
Those that have passed like the leaves from the trees
When age and affliction upon us do fall
Like the leaves we must wither and down we must fall

Hope I haven't forgotten any verses

Green and Yeller

Where have you been, Henry my son
Where have you been, my currant bun
In the woods dear mother
In the woods dear mother

Chorus:
Oh mother be quick, I wanna be sick, and lay me down to die

What did you do there, Henry my boy
What did you do, my saveloy (Note: saveloy is a type of sausage)
Ate, dear mother
Ate, dear mother.
Oh mother be quick, I wanna be sick, and lay me down to die

What did you eat, Henry my son
What did you eat, my currant bun
Eels, dear mother
Eels, dear mother
Oh mother be quick, I wanna be sick, and lay me down to die

What colour were them eels, Henry my boy
What colour were them eels, my saveloy
Green and Yeller
Green and Yeller
Oh mother be quick, I wanna be sick, and lay me down to die

Them wasn't eels, them was snakes, Henry my son
Them wasn't eels, them was snakes, my currant bun
(pause)
Yeuch, dear mother
Yeuch, dear mother
Oh mother be quick, I wanna be sick, and lay me down to die

What colour flowers do you want on your grave, Henry my boy
What colour flowers do you want on your grave, my saveloy
(all together, loudly)

Battle of Harlaw (Did you come from the Highlands, man? etc.)
**Crash** on the Highway --cited as "Wreck on ..."
Old Woman, Old Woman--unsure of that title myself, but that's 1st line

and the following--no idea of title, but it's a dialog between the Devil and a person, Devil speaking first. I know he says, "Questions nine" and there are only eight, but that's it."

If you can't answer my questions nine,
Sing ninety-nine and ninety!
Then you're not God's, your one of mine;
The crow flies over the white oak tree.

/second and fourth lines are repeated each verse/

What is higher than a tree? Sing ...
And what is deeper than the sea? The crow...

Heaven is higher than a tree;
God's love is deeper than the sea.

What is heavier than the lead?
And what is sweeter than the bread?

Grief is heavier than the lead;
And love is sweeter than the bread.

What is sharper than a thorn?
What is louder than the horn?

Hunger's sharper than a thorn;
And thunder's louder than the horn.

What is whiter than the milk?
What is softer than the silk?

Snow is whiter than the milk;
Down is softer than the silk.

Now you have answered my questions nine--
Sing ninety-nine and ninety;
And you are God's, you're none of mine--
The crow flies over the white oak tree.

I'll see if I can't find a melody somewhere--and if anybody knows the title, that would of course help.

Oh, did anyone mention "There's a Hole in the Bucket?" Guess not, 'cause I just searched "bucket" and these are the only hits. That's a good husband-wife dialog humor bit. Surely it's on Digitrad.

The song I referred to above travels under the name "The Devil's Questions." Googling that gets several hits, one of which is a book showing the melody.

Not sure if this one's been listed, so.......

Hev Yew Gotta Loight Boy?

The Singing Postman (Alan Smethurst)1966

I had a gal, a really nice gal, down in Wroxham way.
She were wholly nice to me back in the old school days.
She would smile all the while, but Daddy didn't know all.
What she used to say to me behind the garden wall:
"Hev yew gotta loight, boy? Hev yew gotta loight?"

Then one day she went away. I don't see her no more,
'Til by chance I see her down along the Mundesley shore.
She was there twice as fair. Would she now be true?
So when she sees me passing by, she say, "I'm glad that's you!
Hev yew gotta loight, boy? Have you got a light?"

CHORUS: Molly Windley, she smokes like a chimney,
But she's my little nicotine gal.

Now you'll see her and me never more to part.
We would wander hand in hand together in the dark.
Then one night I held her tight in the old back yard.
So when I tried to hold her close, she say, "Now, hold you hard!
Hev yew gotta loight, boy? Hev yew gotta loight?" CHORUS

By and by, we decide on the wedding day,
So we toddles off to church to hear the preacher say:
"Do you now take this vow to honour all the time?"
Before I has a chance to stop her, she begins to pine:
"Hev yew gotta light, boy? Hev yew gotta light?" CHORUS

Now the doctor tells me a daddy I will be,
So when I ask him, "What's the score?" he say there's only three.
So here I go, cheerio, to see how she do fare.
I know what she will say to me as soon as I get there:
"Hev yew gotta loight, boy?"
