The day of song was started many years ago at the Ram, Firle, by the excellent Jerry Jordan; when he felt unable to continue the Lewes Arms Folk Club took it over as it was too good an event to perish. We've moved to the Royal Oak at Barcombe since the Ram is no longer a village pub.

On the following day, Sunday 20th. January, we have an informal tunes session at the Lewes Arms, Mount Place, Lewes BN7 1YH from noon until 3.00 p.m. for people who've travelled down for the day of song and would like to do a bit of playing as well.

See you there!

Valmai

Perhaps I should have added the Lewes Arms Folk Club website, which has recently been changed: http://www.lewesarmsfolkclub.org/

Tootle pip once more,

There are buses to Barcombe Cross (Don't go to Barcombe Mills.) from Lewes at 09:15 11:15 13:15 15:15.

Unfortunately, the last bus back to Lewes is at 15:46.

Service 122. Details here.

Yes Bryan

That's the way I'll get there.

No 28 from Brighton and change at the Pelham Arms in Lewes to 122.

Only trouble is the last bus back to Lewes is late afternoon so the return journey needs to be by some other means. In my case a taxi from the pub to Lewes train station (unless some kind soul can supply a lift)

I've just been told that Peter Collins hopes to have copies of Sylvia Watts's new CD with him - 'It's got Lynne and Pat doing harmonies and it's great' he says. Sylvia Watts, Lynne Heraud and Pat Turner will be among those present on the day.

It's always a splendid experience. Something about the quality of attention in the room, and perhaps the knowledge that everybody will get their turn in due course, seems to bring out the best in everyone's singing.

Bit late to ask I know, but does anybody going from Brighton have car space for one? (or just a car space coming back - I could get there by public transport)
Ring me on 01273 561104 or 07747310440 if you can help.

I thought it was excellent. Numbers built up steadily during the day and by the late evening there was standing room only. The atmostphere was terrific, and as usual the quality of everyone's singing seemed to be improved by it. Having a team of people to run things means that if anyone is ill and has to drop out we don't have an ugly gap and a panic. Many thanks to everyone who MC'd and performed, and to John Joseph for providing a closing act which no-one could possibly follow (1812 Overture played on surgically-enhanced washboard).

Much as I regret having to move from the Ram at Firle since it stopped being a proper pub, the new venue has a lot to recommend it - more space and better acoustics for a start.

We got the food delivery arranged so that meals were put on a big table near the door with an order number, and it was the diner's responsiblity to collect his own food. This saved kitchen staff having to blunder about the room uttering cries of 'Cheeseburger for Buffington-Strangeways!' during the third murder in a Child Ballad.

We think we've got a formula that works, but there's always room for improvement and any constructive comments would be welcome.

The tunes session in the Lewes Arms from noon - 3.00 pm today was very good fun, with a mixture of locals and visitors, plenty of good chorus tunes, and some nice new ones to hunt down and absorb (notably the Whinshields Hornpipe).

Same again next year,

Valmai

The Sussex All Day Singaround is run by the Lewes Arms Folk Club which meets every Saturday the rest of the year (unless it falls on Christmas Day or Bonfire Night) at The Lewes Arms, Mount Place, Lewes BN7 1YH.

For identification purposes, I'm the fat little bloke with long hair who spent most of the day nodding off in front of the central heating boiler. I was't bored, honest. Just a bit warm and drowsy.

I'm just booking the room now. It will be on Saturday 17th. January 2009 - same format as before.

It's all the people who come who make it such a magnificent experience. I always end the day feeling invigorated and inspired.

By the way, the Lewes Arms Folk Club (Saturday nights) benefits from Harveys as well, both Best and Old. Bryan gives the link to it three messages up. (I was the one with the gingery hair and the concertinas sitting next to him.)

Er do I need to make an "I was the one" contribution.?

OK I was the bloke and Lewes Arms Resident in the Guernsey and Breton Cap drinking Harvey's from a pair of pewter tankards.

I managed to leave the tankards behind but my mate Valmai found them and has them in safekeeping.

We certainly will! By the way, there are more seats at The Royal Oak in Barcombe than we used to have at The Ram, and it was only towards the end of the evening this year that there was standing room only.

Since we're no longer in a bar (although we're on the ground floor) there is unlikely to be a repetition of the quaint incident a few years ago involving Mike Nicholson, a female resident of Firle, a wet dog and a shooting stick.

Tootle pip,

Valmai
