The opening line is 'Once in the town, as the sun went down..'and the only other fragment I can recall is something along the lines of 'so much alarmed, though little harmed, we dread the time of dying (or something like that). The whole lyric was set (I think) to a gentle traditional Irish melody. Thanks for your time. |

He says that the only material by Manticore he remembers was on a cassette rather than a CD, which makes sense as it was so long ago. Not a problem in this technological age, of course. He's going to see if he can find it in his massive archive. I hope he can, because the little snippet masato sakurai pointed us to on the web (post 3) has made be wasnt to hear the whole thing again. |

The good news is that I've now located the song, on a four track cassette sampler sent to Dave Thompson when he was MFAB Festival Director in 1992. The tracks are: Once In The Town Black Is The Colour Of My True Love's Hair The Cuckoo (Live) Little Green (Live) Performers are: Annette Batty, John Neilson and Keith Offord 'Once In The Town' is indeed, as noted, a poem by Frank Mansell set to Carolan's Planxty Irwin. As it's 'Once In The Town' I'm chiefly interested in and, as internet searching for the lyrics/poem has proved fruitless,when time allows I'll take the trouble to transcribe the words for those who may be interested. The poem is as beautiful as the tune. And, oh yes, Annette Batty has a superb voice. |

I sang this with Manticore way back when. Correctly remembered as a lovely Frank Mansell poem set to Planxty Irwin. Full Lyrics as I remember them.: Once in the town , as the sun went down and the wheels of time were turning. When bright and still upon the hill I saw a vision burning. The moon was gone and there stars were none, some great light hid their gleaming. No day began and no river ran , no trace of human scheming. In words of flame , one called my name , and said have done with sorrow. Earths bitter day will pass away and this arise tomorrow. Though much alarmed but never harmed, men fear their time of dying. Yet find no tomb but some new womb and youth before them lying. So weak of mind , the human kind, still doubt the life ensuing, Nor care to see that each life must be fruit of each past lifes doing. Above below the living go , find home in land and ocean. Life wanders far on many a star , that wheels in distant motion. From: GUEST,Annette Batty By the way looking at some other bits of the postings regarding this, yes it was originally on a short a cassette recording. Not the best overall in my humble opinion as some was done in a studio which wasnt that folk orientated and there was all sorts of double tracking bits insisted upon. I think then there was a live in Llangollen recording which was remastered onto a cd in a home studio. This is all the recording I ever did with John and Keith, however some of you may be acquainted with the CD "Gwerin" on which I appeared with John Neilson from Manticore and Steve Tilston. It is one track only - One Night as I lay on my Bed. I really like this as its is very sparse. Steve and I recorded Queen Cruelty for Les Barkers album Airs of the Dog- I only got the gig as Steve couldnt get his tongue around it -its wordy- however he told Les he knew a girl that could! It was hard and I remember doing a number of takes as I ran out of breath. Anyway I wish I could have done more recordings of the quality of the Gwerin track...who knows there is time yet I suppose. From: GUEST,Annette Batty Just as an aside - as you have all had me thinking about that dratted cassette all day! We supported Altan at Bangor Uni years ago and we gave them a tape. Some years later I was alerted to them having made a Manticore credit on one of their albums as they had taken some inspiration from our recording of Black is the Colour and done it themselves. Mhiraed is a really sweet girl. We had a great time back in the 80s met some great /interesting characters and covered quite a bit of ground considering we all had full time jobs. I feel exhausted just thinking about it. No wonder I was always late for work. Thanks for the trip down memory lane--really should do some more music- any decent musicians out there in the mid wales area? A |
