BS: Yacht crew wanted 13-17 Feb. England's south

Subject: BS: Yacht crew wanted
From: Schantieman

Ladies and gentlemen of the Mudcat Cafe,

I am proposing to go yacht sailing in the not very warm waters of England's south coast in a few weeks' time and have some spaces in the crew. Wed 13 - Sun 17 Feb, based Hamble. About £150 per head. Itinerary depending on the weather.

Please contact me soonest if you'd like to come - here or via PM.

:-)

Steve

Have you tried Roger the Cabin Boy? He's into sailing in a big way...

I know Roger Rowe - he used to live with my ex-wife (before she was my wife at all, in case you're interested!) He is indeed into tall ships - he's a watchleaderwith the STA and has sailed several times in the Stavros Niarchos & Prince William. I might ask him anyway.....

Quite possibly, yes. How does the last week in May sound? Might possibly do the weekend of 8th June, but I'm supposed to be at work on weekdays till the second week of July!

Micca, right you are. Even our manner of speech is closer to the King's english than any other state. I often remind "people from away" that our use of the broad "A" is proof of that.

Liz, the only reason I was born in America is that I needed to be near my Mother.

LOL! Well, you will recall that some of us, back then, had reasons for not being very fond of old Englande, so we made a point of placing America as far as away as we reasonably could.

You lot of course have changed a great deal since those days, but, once you start a nation, you know, it isn't a trivial matter to relocate the whole thing.

Junk schooner! Humph! I was born on a fine craft... that had been sold as scrap to my old man.

As for doing the trip in May I'm afraid I'LL still be working then. We don't get out of school till late May and then I'll have some loose ends to tie up before I can get to your side of the world. I won't be in England until about the middle of June. And... if I go anywhere but straight to see my new granddaughter my ass will be roasted by most of my family starting with my daughter and her husband.

As I was saying, I guess I won't be able to go sailing with you. I hope you enjoy your time out there in February. Have a good trip and thanks for offering a trip in May.

Maybe we can all get together in a group so I can meet up with some more of my old Mudcat friends again.

I'd be more than happy to skipper - or just tag along as crew - on a Mudcat cruise. From September I'll have lots of free time as I'm giving up the day job and I'm hoping to earn some money from sailing!

If people are interested we need a separate thread for that.

Always happy to have a begiiner on board. Gives the rest of us a chance to show off!

But seriously, folks, I'd be happy to show you the ropes (literally and metaphorically). We do have to pay the charter cost of the boat but the extra expenses needn't come to very much. I reckon we should get away with less than £150 each for the 5 days with any luck, depending on how frugally we eat!

Do come back to me on this.

We'd love to get some sea miles, but the English Channel in February?!?!? Does the word "Fastnet" ring a bell?

Anyone that would be interested in a bareboat charter in somewhat warmer waters, let me know. We're thinking USVI/BVI/Belize this spring.

Cheers,

OK Lady P. I'm giving up the day job in the summer so I hope to do a lot more in future years. PM for my email if you like :-)

Arne, the Fastnet disater was in August ('79) not February and was way out in the open waters of the SW Approaches & southern Irish Sea. If the weather's horrid (not unlikely at this time of year - look at it now!) we'll stay in the Solent. I've had all sorts of weather there in February, from flat calm and bright sunshine to F8 & heavy hail, and ice (not frost, ice!) on the deck. But there's so much shelter and so many harbours and creeks that there's almost always somewhere to go.
However, I might be interested in BVIs etc. In fact I know someone who has a new Bavaria 40 out there. What dates are you thinking of? PM if you like.

luv & kisses all round

I'm afraid you'd never get me doing something like this, I'm no-where near as brave as you!

It's certainly worth trying to find more pressed men volunteers here on the Mudcat, but the chances of there being a huge percentage of foolhardy brave souls in the UK with time available to them on these particular dates while being Folkies here on the Mudcat too, well that's statistically cutting down your chances of success. I reckon you've done well Steve!

Now, if all the Catters in the UK who saw this thread would just mention this unique opportunity to any of the people they would like to see drowned in the Solent of their friends you might stand a better chance of gathering a couple more crew *grin*

I'd like to take you up on it but alas, the airfare is way out of my range. I imagine it to be no worst that when I took a cold & stormy Thanksgiving sail from Boston to Burmuda in a 48' cutter about 25 yrs ago. I got paid + airfare back to take the week off from work to crew. After the 7 days was up I got my airfare & headed for the airport in Alantic City to head back home. It was fun, my 1st & only bout at seasickness (mild) but we didn't get very far (as far as NJ of all places) before we had to twice head for a safe harbor for repairs & shelter. I opted to head out to sea beyond the GF, could've done the repairs on the go & then drive her downwind (& against the Gulf Stream, I'm sure they wouldn't have known how far to head out) towards the islands but they opted for hugging the coast, jerks! After day 7 I left them in the rigging, rerigging to return to my real day job, I think it was the last time I sailed with idiots, though sailing with idiots may be dangerous it is usually cause for continual excitment & some of the stuff good/funny stories are made of, if you survive. If you do a warm season sail in the future & I happen to have airfare would you count me in? I'll look foward to a report on your venterous sail just to see if I'm asking an idiot or not, not that that would deter me for anything stupid, dangerous or exciting, though I may be getting a bit old for that kind of thing now.

I understand where you're coming from, Guru, but there are definately more car accidents than sailing ones. It's so safe these days (nanny state, discuss) that drowning can probably only be done by those determined to do so. Steve is a brill skipper, obeying all the rules to the 'T'. So long as he remembers which sign means stop and which means go..tee hee... Spain, 2006 8) (sorry 'in' joke here) I think a good sail and a good sing at the same time, would be a great way of breaking the back of a long, cold, lonely winter.

There are indeed many more car accidents than sailing ones (however- shhhh - there are a lot more drivers than sailors!).

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Sally. I certainly don't believe in taking unnecessary risks (or indeed rusks, which is what I typed the first time) and safety first is very much the maxim. I need to pass my Yachtmaster exam soon and losing crew members and boats does tend to cost marks.

Well - didn't we have a good time!

Bright sunshine, clear skies, moderate winds and good food throughout. Bit chilly at night but that's February for you. Some lovely sunsets, a lot of wildlife (curlews, loads of sandpipers & oystercathcers and a buzzard up the Beaulieu and a green woodpecker on the way home, not to mention a kestrel stooping).

Lovely Chinese in Southampton, preceded by a drink in The London Hotel, clearly the centre of Southampton's gay night-life. Ho hum.

So - who's up for doing it at Whitsun, if I can get a pass-out? I'm also giving up the day job so I'm available for skippering any time from September onwards.

OK guys - new thread as well, but in case anyone's watching this, I've got a boat booked from Plymouh 25 - 29 May (over the Bank Holiday). Five crew so far (including me) so one space. But it's a big b oat (41') so we could take up to 7 or even 8 if we have to, if two want to come.

Plymouth - Falmouth - Dartmouth area, depending on tides and weather. £200 - £250 or so. No experience needed.

Hi thought about this the first time I saw it, I am in Scotland now, but also get down South still, I have my competent crew, and have sailed around the Solent a few time, still belkong to the sailing club down there. I cant make any of the possible dates this year but will keep my eye open for another time hopefully.
