DT Correction: Fairport Convention Songs

17 Jan 08 - 05:28 PM (#2238783)
Subject: RE: Correct the Digital Tradition
From: GUEST,Judy Dyble

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but there are several mistakes in the words of the songs that I was involved with on the list of Fairport Convention songs. If you would like me to correct them then I am happy to do so, but I'm not quite sure how to go about it......

As stated in the message above (which I moved from another thread), Judy Dyble has some corrections to Fairport Convention songs that are in the Digital Tradition. Judy, I hope you'll see this and post corrections here. It's best to post the complete lyrics, not just telling us to correct the third word in the second line of the sixteenth stanza - which can cause profound confusion.

Thanks.

I still listen to and enjoy the first Fairport album even though it must be nearly 40 years since I first listened to it. If it is THE Judy Dyble - thanks for the pleasure.

Actually Joe, it is easier for me if the sites of the corrections are pointed out, rather than my having to do a letter by letter comparison with a newly posted version of a song. Judy, if you are good with HTML, post the whole lyric with the corrections highlighted in some way, so I can see what to correct. Otherwise, third word in the second line of the sixteenth stanza isn't that bad a way to show it. Also, please identify the song by the filename at the end of the file, since that is the best identifier. Which songs are we talking about? And are these additional versions or corrections?

These are the songs from the 1st Fairport LP and nearly every song from it has a mistake in it! I thought that if the songs are there they might as well be the correct versions as we sang them, or, if I can check them with the original version, they will be the original words. I hope!

Mostly they are single word corrections, but in the case of One Sure Thing there is an extra verse, which was left out of the Fairport version, but appears on the original Jim & Jean (who wrote it) version, and which I have re-instated in the new version which I am about to release as a single in collaboration with the Conspirators. Heavens! that was a long sentence!

Hope this is ok. (and yes Nick, it is me, grin!)

How's this

Well, I can see Susan's need - but maybe would it be possible ot post both the correction information and a complete, corrected song? It often takes quite a while for the corrections to appear in the Digital Tradition, and it's nice if people can read
them here, complete, right away.
I'll add "The Lobster" lyrics to Judy's post to show what I mean.

Judy - If you join Mudcat, the info they require from you is :-
First name
Last Name
a "Mudcat Name" (which can be anything not already in use). Some people use their real name, others make something up.
a Password, so you can log in or out as suits you.
and An e-mail address which is usually only used when someone loses their cookie and forgets their password. Joe will send your password via the e-mail you have given. The e-mail you give is not displayed anywhere on the forum.

There are boxes on the form for addresses and phone numbers, but they are not compulsory, so you shouldn't have any worries about private data. The people who run Mudcat don't sell e-mail addresses.

There is a section where people can post a profile of their interests or their professional work, but that is purely optional and many of us don't. In my case due to "couldn't be bothered" syndrome as much as anything else.

Come on in, the water's lovely...

Right then are you ready?
Wrong words in brackets, correct ones after
my coloured bits don't work so follow instructions in brackets for removal
I'll post Chelsea Morning and Jack O'Diamonds as a try out Please tell me if it's ok

CHELSEA MORNING
(Joni Mitchell)

Woke up (big this) it was a Chelsea morning and the first thing that I heard
Was a song outside my window
And the traffic wrote the words
It came ringing up like Christmas bells
And rapping up like pipes and drums
Oh, won't you stay, we'll put on a day
And we'll wear it till the night comes

Woke up(big this) it was a Chelsea morning and the first thing that I saw
Was the sun through yellow curtains
And a rainbow on my wall
Blue, red, green and gold to welcome you
Crimson, crystal (peaks) beads to beckon
Oh, won't you stay, we'll put on a day,
There's a side-show every second

Now the curtain opens on a portrait of today
And the streets are paved with passers-by
And (pictures) pigeons fly and papers lie
Just waiting to blow away

Woke up (big this) it was a Chelsea morning and the first thing that I knew
There was milk and toast and honey
And a bowl of oranges too
And the light poured in like butterscotch
And stuck to all my senses
Oh, won't you stay, we'll put on a day
And we'll talk in present tenses

Now the curtain closes and the rainbow runs away
I'll bring you incense(,) owls by night
By candle-light, by jewel-light
If only you will stay

Pretty baby, won't you
Wake up, it's (the) a Chelsea morning

JACK O'DIAMONDS
(Bob Dylan & Carruthers)

Jack O'Diamonds, on the move
Jack O'Diamonds, one-eyed knave
On the move, hits the street
Bumps his head, on the ground
Well, he's a scout, you're born to lose
Shouldn't stay
Jack O'Diamonds is a hard card to play

Jack O'Diamonds, yeah Jack O'Diamonds
This one-eyed prince, wears a (*single love*) single glove
Oh sure, he's not that lovely
Jack O'Diamonds broke my hand
Left me here to stand
Jack O'Diamonds is a hard card to land

Jack O'Diamonds is a hard card
Jack O'Diamonds is a high card
Jack O'Diamonds is a hard card
But it ain't hard enough

>>I'll bring you incense(,) owls by night

My wife sings Chelsea Morning and I have always found the above to be something of a bizarre line.

Is it a really angry owl? As in "incensed owl". Why would you give someone an angry owl?
Or is it an owl who has been perched in an incense-laden atmosphere and presumably smells pleasant as it quietly flies past you - a bit like a live air-freshener.
And even if it's not smelly or cross - why would you bring someone an owl? It's very strange behaviour

I used to reckon it was an incensed towel which might be quite pleasant.

Enjoyed your web site by the way and your descriptions of your return to singing at Cropredy were sweet, and the library experience.

As I understand it, the 'incense owl' was similar to today's scented candle holders, possibly it was an owl shaped incense burner in the room in which Ms Mitchell stayed in Chelsea about which she wrote the song. Yes people burnt a lot of incense in the late sixties. Can't think why........

Subject: Lyr Add: I DON'T KNOW WHERE I STAND (Joni Mitchell
From: Judy Dyble

I'll post the others then...
No idea why I Don't Know Where I stand has picked up a chorus from! and don't forget the 'I' in the title (might not be obvious!)

BOTH SIDES NOW
(Joni Mitchell)

(Bows) Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice-cream castles in the sky
And (feather)feathered canyons everywhere
I've looked (to) at clouds that way.
But now they only block the sun,
They rain and snow on everyone.
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way.
I've looked at clouds from both sides now,
From up and down, and still somehow,
Its cloud illusions I recall,
I really don't know clouds at all.

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at (clouds) love that way.
But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when they go
And if you care don't let them know
Don't give yourself away.
I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all.

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way.
But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
But something's lost and something's gained
In living every day.
I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all.

I DON'T KNOW WHERE I STAND
(Joni Mitchell)

Funny day, looking for laughter and finding it there
Sunny day, braiding (white) wildflowers and leaves in my hair
Picked up a pencil and wrote 'I love you' in my finest hand
Wanted to send it but I don't know where I stand

(Cho: If you want to live to be a poor man or a prince
Pay good attention when evil times abound
Always listen to what your mother says and stay in bed at night - remove)

Telephone, even the sound of your voice is still new
All alone in Carolina and talking to you
And feeling too foolish and strange to say the words that I had planned
Guess it's too early 'cos I don't know where I stand

Crickets talk, courting their ladies in star-dappled green
Crickets talk until the morning comes up like a dream
All muted and misty, so drowsy now, I'll take what sleep I can
I know that I miss you but I don't know where I stand
Know that I miss you but I don't know where I stand

TIME WILL SHOW THE WISER
(Rhodes)

My mind keeps on telling me that this is no good
And my heart is aching, (that) and tells me I should
But only time will show the wiser

I've fallen in love with a girl that's not mine
If I take her it will hurt him, (a) the very best friend of mine
But I know that I need someone, to hold, to love
And my mind says I shouldn't but my heart says I should

And I don't know which to go by, my mind or my heart
And this is so confusing, it's tearing me apart
Time, it will show the wiser

Well, I wish someone would help me, this decision is mine
And my morals and emotions are hard to combine
And there is no easy way out to limit the time
That it takes till she finds out for the love that I hide

And I don't know which to go by, my mind or my heart
And this is so confusing, it's tearing me apart
Time, it will show the wiser

Additional verse and repeated chorus in this
ONE SURE THING

He used to be the only man I would see
He used to be the only good man for me
Oh, he used to be my one sure thing

There was a time when he would come when I called
There was a time when I would take and not give at all
Oh he used to be my one sure thing ADDITIONAL VERSE

Look at me now, what you see, it isn't me
Look at me now, just a leaf without a tree
Oh, he used to be my one sure thing

My man, he doesn't care for me
And what he does, he doesn't do for me
And when I need something
To him, it doesn't mean a thing
You know he used to be my one sure thing

And the last one I think

IT'S ALRIGHT MA, IT'S ONLY WITCHCRAFT

Lookin' through the window to see which way the wind blows
It seems as though a hurricane is due today
Sunny on the outside, stormy on the inside
Stormy weather's always best for making hay

Here comes Everlastin', looks like he's been fastin'
With his friends in the den where directors roll
Like a banderillo with his cigarillo
Robs the rich, robs the rest, brings it all back home

Please don't get us wrong, man
This is just a song, man
No matter what you say
This is the season, stormy weather's on the way
This is the season, stormy weather's on the way
You better start worrying (which *grabs* you) witchcraft's here to stay

In blows Snow White, the dwarves are kinda off-white
The (patient's) vision's his decision so they're outta luck
Associates are reelin', the wallpaper is peelin'
He doesn't see the paperwork that's come unstuck

Please don't get us wrong, man
This is just a song, man
No matter what you say
This is the season, stormy weather's on the way
This is the season, stormy weather's on the way
You better start worrying(which *grabs*you) witchcraft's here to stay

In comes Saville, had his fill of travel
Grabbed a bite on the flight, just touched down today
Lookin' drawn and haggard, through the door he staggered
With a sound that he found (on the) over Frisco Way
Please don't get us wrong, man
This is just a song, man
No matter what you say
This is the season, stormy weather's on the way
This is the season, stormy weather's on the way
You better start worrying(which *grabs*you) witchcraft's here to stay

I'm fascinated as to why they picked up on that particular song after all these years which hasn't had loads of covers to my knowledge - is there a reason?

Coincidentally I had seen them advertising for a bass player a while back as they are reasonably local to us (as I was looking to join another band) but felt I might be a little on the ancient side.

I heard it last week on myspace and it's very enjoyable - a good update but still true to the original

The Conspirators really liked the song and so do I and it was one that we thought would work well together with two lead singers so that was why we chose it! They have found another bass player now who is really excellent and it is the most entertainingly amusing thing that I have done so far.....
