I am looking for the lyrics to the MAlvina Reynolds song twelve hugs a day which claimed we all need that many.

You sure that's a Malvina Reynolds song?

Perhaps not but I think she sang it. it is the sort of thought she would have had and expressed. It is at least a Malvina type song.

This quote comes up at many web sites:

"We need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need twelve hugs a day for growth."

-- Virginia Satir.

However, although The Virginia Satir Global Network has lots of information about her, I can't find mention of "hugs" there.

* * *

I didn't find any song called TWELVE HUGS A DAY, but I found some similar titles:

Paula James recorded FOUR HUGS A DAY on her album "Sweet Country Love," 2002. I transcribed this from a sound sample at Amazon.com:

...Four hugs a day, now you know you really should get at least
Four hugs a day, and you'll smile from ear to ear.
I'm in need of a big old hug, so come on over here.
Well, it didn't take me very long to see that he was right....

Here's a completely different song with the same title. The following lyrics are copied from Charlotte Diamond's web site. (There is a 2-minute sound sample at CD Baby.)

FOUR HUGS A DAY
By Earl Robinson ASCAP and Charlotte Diamond SOCAN 1984
© Charlotte Diamond Music Inc., as recorded on "10 Carrot Diamond"

Nobody gets enough hugs a day
'Cause the minimum number is four.
Now if you haven't got four hugs today,
Then you better get some more.

CHORUS: Four hugs a day, that's the minimum,
Four hugs a day, not the maximum.
Four hugs a day, that's the minimum,
Four hugs a day, not the maximum. REPEAT

Step one: look them right in the eye.
Step two: nose to nose.
Step three: reach your arms.
Step four: you can't do any harm, with-- CHORUS

Don't forget your mama and papa,
Your grandma, your grandpa, and all your friends, too.
Brothers and sisters and that uncle,
And don't forget your teachers too.

We need one, two, three, and four.
We need one, two, three, and four. CHORUS

Don't forget to give four hugs today.

From: Jim Dixon

Stuart Stotts and Tom Pease recorded a different song called 8 HUGS A DAY on their children's album "Everybody Started Out Small," 2007. There is a 2-minute sound sample at CD Baby, which sounds as if it might be the whole song:

CHORUS: Eight hugs a day, eight hugs a day,
Remember what the doctors say: eight hugs a day. REPEAT.

You need ten hours of sleep, three good meals a day,
Exercise, take a nap, and don't forget some time to play. CHORUS.

We're quiet when we hug. It's what we love to do,
But I'll be sure you're ready before I give a hug to you. CHORUS.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. CHORUS TWICE.

Oh, you give them to your family, you give them to your friends,
Give them to your teachers, and one group hug before day's end. CHORUS TWICE.

Somewhere i have a 60s parody of this song, entitled £4 a day.

Four pounds a day me lads and bugger all to do
No trouble from the foreman, he's in the union too
Outside our picks and shovels, they slowly rust away
We're rained off and contented on £4 a day.
etc.

Giok: Surely *that's* a parody of "Fourpence a Day"!

Stan Kelly, I believe, was responsible for the four pound parody - my third line is "Some want the rain to go to Spain, we want the rain to stay". On the main topic, I recall Earl Robinson singing this at Expo '74 in Spokane.

Our Everything Malvina thread contains a fairly complete list of all her songs published in songbooks, and I didn't see any "hugs" songs listed.
