08 May 99 - 08:10 PM (#76807) Subject: Ryan's Fancy or Dermot O'Reilly lyrics From: parsons3@slb.com I'm looking for the lyrics to "West Country Lady" (RF performed it a lot, not sure who wrote it). Also looking for lyrics to a song, not sure on the title, maybe "Bubbles in the Glass?" It is an original by Dermot O'Reilly (founding member of RF) - anyone have it? Barry Parsons |

09 May 99 - 08:17 PM (#77050) Subject: RE: Ryan's Fancy or Dermot O'Reilly lyrics From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca I have e-mailed you privately with Fergus O'Byrne's contact -- he might be able to help you. Dermot O'Reilly sings this song on the CD "All The Best -- Folk Music of St. John's Newfoundland," Pigeon Inlet Productions PIPCD 7322. The liner notes imply that O'Reilly wrote it, inspired by his adopted hometown of Torbay, Newfoundland. I don't know if this CD is still out, but it's well worth getting if you can find it. You can ask at http://www.bpm.on.ca (with which I have no connection) as they are reliable and generally very good at tracking down Canadian folk CD's. |

Ryan's Fancy remain one of my all time favorites and it was nice to see them get the award last year. Fergus stayed with my sister during the festival and we had several awesome jams during the weekend. I think he could sing over a 747 during take off. What a set of pipes! Great people! |

18 Dec 04 - 11:53 AM (#1360423) Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: WEST COUNTRY LADY (Dermot O'Reilly From: Jim Dixon Here's the song that this thread was started for. Other songs should be requested or discussed in a separate thread. Lyrics and chords copied from http://www.wtv-zone.com/phyrst/audio/nfld/02/lady.htm WEST COUNTRY LADY Dermot O'Reilly, 1979 Over Pipers Stock Hill, take the time for to wander Across the main bridge to the north side and yonder, And if you look long to the west, there's a chance That you'll see her move down to the bridge for the dance, And she still hears the music of anvil and saw, And she still looks to nature to lay out the law. CHORUS: She's a West Country lady from back in the past, And she faces the ocean where noisy waves blast On the rocks; and the wind blows a gale from all quarters Or summer sun sparkles on still waters down in the bay. She was there when they came on the very first ship, And she saw how the admirals ruled with a whip, And she worked with her man and her young sons and daughters, To harvest the fields and the woods and the waters, And often with sadness she's looked to the sea, With a longing for times that were never to be. CHORUS Since the sea was the way between island and nation, And old ways were new ways in this planter's station, She's watched all the changes with pride and some sorrow. Some old ways remain and she hopes that tomorrow Will kindly tend to the bountiful sea, And her land and her people will always be free. CHORUS CHORDS Capo second fret Over [G] Pipers Stock Hill take the time for to wander, Ac- [C] ross the main bridge to the [D] North side and yonder; And [G] if you look long to the west there's a chance, That you'll [C] see her move down to the [D] bridge for the dance. And she [Em] still hears the music of an- [Am] vil and saw, And [C] she still looks to nature to [D] lay out the law. She's a [G] West country lady from back in the past. And she [C] faces the ocean where [D] noisy waves blast On [G] the rocks. And the wind blows a gale from all quarters Or [C] summer sun sparkles on [D] still waters down in the [G] bay. [C] [G] [D] |
