We're not flooded but all the gateways to our fields are under about 18 inches of thick gloopy mud, not easy to lead horses through, and one field appears to now have a giant lake in the middle. Still loads of people much worse off than us. Poor sods. |

The 23rd Illawarra Folk festival tried to outdo the 1st & 2nd Kangaroo Valley Festivals! Nothing can outdo the first KV festival - 3 days of solid rain, mud & beautifully green marshes everywhere. Squelch, squelch, ask JennyO about mud over her ankles! 2nd KV Festival had sunshine on day 3 but the ground did not instantly dry out (funny that!) Illawarra had some good mud holes, too & after one prolonged period of squelching thru mud outside & inside the large marquee in the middle of the showground, I was lucky to find a puddle with grass & clean sand! where I could paddle about washing my feet! When I got home it took 2 showers to get all the ingrained mud off my feet & around my toenails. The mud thought it was quicksand & tried to keep footwear, including gumboots, so we had to walk carefully to avoid falling, but we had a lovely time. Illawrra had sunshine on the last day, too, but the forecast said more rain & winds in the late pm & we got our tents down & packed in the late am. Got bloody wet getting to the car in the pm as the rain came down in a very tropical fashion, and the first part of the trip home was bad - up the escarpment with very heavy rain & fog & slow traffic (good thing!) We saw a beautifully restored 1950s/60s American car & a motor bike sheltering below underpasses, lucky them, the rest of us kept creeping along. Then we hit blue skies & dry roads on the outskirts of Sydney, and watched the black clouds heading around to Sydney, fortunately the rain came down about half an hour after I got inside. It was rather wimpy rain tho, nothing like the intense rain we drove thru. sandra |

I'm a little further inland on tha banks of the Derwent and my garden's under water. Fortunately my house is about six feet above the water level so it's OK at the moment. Couldn't get back from Shipley on the train last night or into work this morning as the River Aire has overflowed its banks again, so had to go by bus into Leeds. Thinking about building an ark. |

If you hear of heavy rain in N Yorkshire, spring tides, and a northerly gale don't bother calling, I am probably busy. Mind you, it has been OK here today. |

The largest one took place on the mountainside street above me. Pushed one apartment house off its moorings, totalled three cars and left 3-foot deep mud on the street. One woman tenant was in her kitchen when the mud pushed through her window. She is still freaked out. I think mudslides are the scariest- much worse than flooding or snow avalanches. I think it's a pyschological thing- one can picture oneself drowning or suffocating but the idea of mud... Ugh. |
